Chapter 14: The Memory I Was Never Supposed to Recover
The world became silent.
I looked at the photograph again.
My younger face stared back at me.
A man I recognized.
But didn’t understand.
“What is this?””
Michael sat down.
“You were part of it.””
My anger exploded.
“No.””
“Christopher—”
“No!””
I slammed the file onto the table.
“I spent my entire life serving this country.””
Michael didn’t flinch.
“I know.””
“I protected people.””
“I know.””
“I lost friends.””
“I know.””
“Then don’t stand there and tell me I was one of them.””
Michael looked at me.
“I’m not saying you knew.””
That stopped me.
“What?””
He took a breath.
“Thirty years ago, they used you.””
I stared.
“They erased parts of what happened.””
My head started hurting.
Memories.
Fragments.
A meeting I couldn’t remember.
A conversation.
A folder.
A name.
Michael continued.
“You were investigating corruption inside the military.””
“Yes.””
“But you found something bigger.””
“The network.””
He nodded.
“They realized you were too dangerous.””
“So they framed me?””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“They did something worse.””
“What?””
“They made you forget.””
Nobody spoke.
I laughed quietly.
“That’s impossible.””
Michael opened another file.
“Your medical records.””
I looked down.
A page.
A signature.
My signature.
A treatment I didn’t remember.
I felt dizzy.
“They convinced you it was for trauma.””
Michael’s voice softened.
“But it was to remove information.””
Hannah stepped closer.
“Dad?””
I looked at her.
“I don’t remember.””
The words hurt to say.
“I don’t remember.””
Michael nodded.
“That’s why they chose you.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because you were the only person who could expose them.””
A sound came from the doorway.
Everyone turned.
Helen stood there.
Her face was pale.
“I was hoping you would never find out this way.””
My heart sank.
“Helen.””
She walked inside slowly.
“I need to tell you the rest.””
I looked at her.
“How much more?””
She accepted my anger.
“One more truth.””
She looked at Hannah.
“I didn’t disappear because they found me.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Then why?””
Helen’s voice broke.
“Because I found out the person behind everything was someone we trusted.””
Michael looked at her.
“Tell him.””
She nodded.
“The person controlling Zachary, Thomas, and the others…”
She looked at me.
“Was your father.””
I froze.
My father.
A man who had been dead for twenty years.
“No.””
Helen nodded.
“He built the foundation.””
Michael added:
“He created the network.””
I felt sick.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
I stepped backward.
Everything I knew about my life was changing.
“My father was a monster?””
Helen shook her head.
“No.””
That confused me.
“Then what?””
“He was trying to stop it.””
The room went quiet.
Michael looked at me.
“He joined them to destroy them from inside.””
I stared.
“Then why hide?””
“Because someone betrayed him.””
“Who?””
Michael looked at Helen.
Helen looked at me.
And I knew.
Before anyone spoke.
Because suddenly every secret connected.
Every betrayal.
Every disappearance.
Every lie.
The person who had controlled everything wasn’t the strongest person.
It was the person nobody questioned.
Helen whispered:
“The person who betrayed your father…”
A pause.
“…was Thomas Reed.””
My hands shook.
Michael looked toward the window.
“Then we have a problem.””
“What?””
He pointed outside.
A car was parked across the street.
The headlights turned on.
Someone was inside.
Michael’s expression changed.
“He found us.””
May you like
The car door opened.
And the person who stepped out was carrying the one thing everyone had spent thirty years trying to destroy.
