Chapter 7: The Friend Who Knew Too Much

The photo stayed on the screen.

I stared at the face standing outside the storage unit.

For a moment, my mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

Because some betrayals are too painful to recognize immediately.

The person in the picture wasn’t Zachary.

It wasn’t one of his employees.

It wasn’t a stranger.

It was Thomas Reed.

My best friend of thirty-five years.

The man who stood beside me when I returned from overseas.

The man who held my daughter as a baby.

The man who cried at my wife’s funeral.

“Tom?”” I whispered.

Hannah stepped closer.

“Dad… who is that?””

I couldn’t answer.

Officer Ramirez looked at me.

“You know him?””

I slowly nodded.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

I swallowed.

“Thomas Reed.””

The room became quiet.

Helen looked confused.

“Christopher, are you sure?””

I looked at her.

“I would know him anywhere.””

Daniel stared at the photo.

“Then he’s involved.””

“No.””

The word came out immediately.

Too quickly.

Everyone noticed.

Because defending someone you love is instinctive.

Even when the evidence is against them.

Ramirez folded his arms.

“Colonel, the person in this photo accessed a storage unit registered under your name.””

“I understand.””

“And that person appears to be your friend.””

I looked away.

“I understand.””

But I didn’t understand.

Not really.

Because Thomas wasn’t just my friend.

He was family.

He was the man I trusted with my home when I traveled.

The man who helped Hannah after her mother’s death.

The man who told me Zachary was “a good husband.””

Suddenly, that memory felt different.

Officer Ramirez noticed my expression.

“Did he know about your daughter’s marriage?””

“Yes.””

“Did he ever defend Zachary?””

I hesitated.

That hesitation answered everything.

“Yes.””

Hannah looked at me.

“Dad?””

I sat down.

The weight of everything finally reached me.

“I remember something.””

Everyone waited.

“About two years after you married Zachary, I told Tom I was worried about you.””

“What did he say?”” Hannah asked.

I looked at her.

“He told me you were lucky.””

Her face changed.

“Lucky?””

“He said Zachary gave you a beautiful life.””

Hannah laughed quietly.

A painful sound.

“I told him I was scared.””

My head snapped toward her.

“What?””

She looked down.

“I called him once.””

The room froze.

“You called Tom?””

She nodded.

“I didn’t know who else to call.””

My chest tightened.

“What happened?””

“He came to the mansion.””

“When?””

“Three years ago.””

I looked at Helen.

Then Daniel.

Nobody knew.

“What did he do?””

Hannah’s eyes filled with tears.

“He told me to stop accusing Zachary.””

My hands clenched.

“He said I was ruining a good man’s reputation.””

The silence afterward was unbearable.

Because suddenly the person I trusted most looked exactly like the people I had spent years fighting against.

Officer Ramirez spoke.

“We need to find him.””

I stood.

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Christopher, there’s something you should know.””

“What?””

“When Zachary threatened me seven years ago, he mentioned another person.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked at the photo.

“Thomas Reed.””

The name echoed.

I felt something inside me break.

“No.””

Daniel nodded.

“He said, ‘Christopher will never see it coming because his own brother will protect me.’”

I looked at him.

“Brother?””

Daniel shook his head.

“Not by blood.””

The meaning was clear.

A brother by choice.

A brother I trusted.

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at it.

I answered.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only breathing.

Then a familiar voice.

“Christopher.””

My blood turned cold.

“Tom.””

Thomas sighed.

“I was hoping you wouldn’t find out this way.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Where are you?””

“I need you to listen.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“You need to explain.””

A pause.

Then Thomas said something that changed everything.

“Your wife didn’t disappear because of Zachary.””

I looked at Helen.

She looked terrified.

Thomas continued.

“She disappeared because of what I did.””

Nobody moved.

My voice became quiet.

“What did you do?””

Another pause.

Then:

“I helped Zachary hide the truth.””

The call went silent.

But before he hung up, Thomas whispered one final sentence.

“And Christopher… the person you’re protecting right now is the reason Hannah almost died.””
