Chapter 2: The Person Behind the Door
For a moment, nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Zachary.
Not even the police officers who had just entered the hallway.
The only sound was the faint hum of the mansion’s heating system.
I stared at the locked door.
My mind was fighting reality.
Because the voice behind it belonged to someone I had buried years ago.
“Impossible,” I whispered.
Zachary watched my face carefully.
That scared me more than anything.
Because he wasn’t confused.
He wasn’t surprised.
He knew.
Officer Ramirez stepped beside me.
“Colonel Montgomery, who is inside?””
I didn’t answer.
I couldn’t.
The voice came again.
“Christopher?””
My blood turned cold.
“Open the door.””
Zachary stepped forward.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
Officer Ramirez raised an eyebrow.
“Sir, your wife is behind this door and appears to be in danger. Move away.””
Zachary forced a laugh.
“You don’t understand. Hannah has been having emotional episodes.””
I looked at him.
“Emotional episodes?””
His eyes shifted.
“You know what she’s like.””
That sentence hit me harder than a punch.
Because I had heard it before.
From men who wanted everyone to believe the victim was the problem.
I stepped toward him.
“Say one more word about my daughter like that.””
“Christopher,” Officer Ramirez warned.
I stopped.
Not because I wanted to.
Because I knew I needed control.
I had spent decades learning that anger could make you lose the battle before it started.
The officer examined the lock.
“Do you have a key?””
Zachary didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Ramirez looked at another officer.
“Break it.””
The sound of the door cracking echoed through the hallway.
“Hannah?”” I called.
No answer.
Again.
The lock broke.
The door swung open.
And I saw my daughter.
She was sitting on the floor in the corner.
Her face was bruised.
Her wrists had red marks.
But she was alive.
I dropped beside her.
“Oh God.””
She grabbed my jacket.
“I knew you’d come.””
I held her tighter than I had since she was a child.
“I’m sorry.””
She shook her head.
“Dad, you need to listen.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
Her eyes moved toward the closet.
“There’s someone else.””
The police immediately moved.
“Clear the room.””
The closet door slowly opened.
A man stepped out.
Older.
Tired.
Terrified.
And I knew him.
My brother-in-law.
My late wife’s brother.
Daniel.
But Daniel had died seven years earlier.
At least, that was what everyone believed.
I stood frozen.
“Daniel?””
He looked at me with tears in his eyes.
“I didn’t know who else to call.””
My mind was spinning.
“You’re alive?””
He swallowed.
“Yes.””
Officer Ramirez immediately raised his hand.
“Everyone stay where you are.””
Daniel lifted his hands.
“I’m not here to hurt anyone.””
I looked at Hannah.
“What is happening?””
She started crying.
“Dad, Zachary found out Daniel was alive.””
I turned toward Zachary.
His calm expression was gone.
“You knew?””
Nobody answered.
Then Daniel said something that changed everything.
“Zachary didn’t just hurt Hannah.””
He looked at me.
“He built his entire empire on a lie.””
The room went silent.
Zachary laughed nervously.
“That’s ridiculous.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No. What’s ridiculous is that you thought nobody would ever find the evidence.””
My daughter grabbed my hand.
“Dad, six years ago, I found something in Zachary’s office.””
“What?””
“A hidden file.””
Zachary’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
The same expression I had seen on enemy soldiers before they attacked.
Fear.
“What file?”” I asked.
Hannah looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“The file that proves Zachary wasn’t the man everyone thinks he is.””
A phone suddenly rang.
Everyone looked down.
It was coming from inside Zachary’s pocket.
He ignored it.
The phone rang again.
Officer Ramirez held out his hand.
“Answer it.””
Zachary refused.
So Ramirez took the phone.
He looked at the screen.
Then his face changed.
“Who is Evelyn Carter?””
Nobody spoke.
But Hannah did.
Her voice barely came out.
“Dad…”
I turned to her.
“That’s the name of the woman Zachary told me never existed.””
The officer looked at the incoming call.
Then he answered.
May you like
And the voice on the other end said five words that changed the entire investigation.
“Christopher Montgomery is here, isn’t he?””
