Chapter 12: The Brother Who Never Left

I stared at Harrington.

For several seconds, I couldn’t process the words.

“My brother is dead.””

The sentence sounded like a fact.

A fact I had carried for decades.

Harrington looked at me with sadness.

“That’s what they wanted you to believe.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Christopher.””

“No.””

My voice became sharper.

“My brother died when I was twenty-two.””

Harrington didn’t argue.

He simply said:

“Did you see the body?””

The question silenced me.

Because I hadn’t.

I remembered the funeral.

The closed casket.

The official reports.

The grief.

But I had never seen him.

I sat down slowly.

Hannah reached for my hand.

“Dad?””

I barely heard her.

“What was his name?””

Harrington looked at me.

“Michael.””

The name hit like a wave.

My older brother.

The person who taught me how to ride a bike.

The person who protected me when we were kids.

The person I thought I lost forever.

“He’s alive?””

Harrington nodded.

“Yes.””

“Where?””

His expression changed.

“I don’t know.””

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“You expect me to believe my dead brother has been alive this whole time?””

“No.””

Harrington looked at me.

“I expect you to believe the evidence.””

He reached into a drawer.

He pulled out an envelope.

Inside were photographs.

The first showed a young man.

Michael.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakably him.

The second photo showed him standing beside Zachary’s father.

The third showed him meeting Thomas Reed.

My hands started shaking.

“No.””

Harrington continued.

“Your brother became involved with the same people you were investigating.””

“Why?””

“Power.””

I looked away.

The word felt too simple.

“My brother destroyed my family for power?””

Harrington didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t need to.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*You finally found the truth, little brother.*

My blood ran cold.

Another message appeared.

*Now come find me.*

Attached was a location.

A place I recognized.

My childhood home.

The house where Michael and I grew up.

I looked at Harrington.

“You knew he would contact me.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He stood slowly.

“Because he’s not hiding anymore.””

The room went silent.

Hannah looked at me.

“Dad, you don’t have to go alone.””

I looked at her.

For years, I had tried to carry every burden myself.

Protect everyone.

Fix everything.

But I finally understood something.

Secrets grew in darkness.

And my family had lived in darkness for too long.

I turned to Officer Ramirez.

“We’re going.””

He nodded.

But before we left, Harrington grabbed my arm.

“Christopher.””

I looked back.

His face was filled with fear.

“There’s something you need to know.””

“What?””

He swallowed.

“Michael didn’t come back because he wants revenge.””

A pause.

“He came back because he knows the final piece of evidence is hidden somewhere only you can find.””

I frowned.

“What evidence?””

Harrington looked at me.

“The evidence that proves who really ordered your wife’s disappearance.””

I felt a chill.

“Who?””

May you like

His answer was barely a whisper.

“The person who has been standing beside you since the beginning.””
