Chapter 8: The Mother Who Knew Everything

I stared at the incoming call.

Vanessa's mother, Patricia Whitmore, had always treated me politely.

She brought expensive wine to family dinners, complimented my apartment, and frequently told me how happy she was that Vanessa had found such a dependable husband.

I'd believed her.

Now I wondered how much she knew.

I answered.

"Patricia?""

"Daniel, thank goodness. I've been trying to reach you.""

Her voice sounded strained.

"What's going on?""

"Where is Vanessa?""

"She left with her father.""

A long silence followed.

Then she whispered:

"Did Robert show you the documents?""

I looked at Dad.

"Yes.""

Another silence.

"Then you know about the house.""

"I know about the house, the forged paperwork, and the attempted withdrawal from my account.""

She inhaled sharply.

"Oh, Daniel.""

I gripped the phone.

"How much did you know?""

"Can we please meet somewhere private?""

"Why?""

"Because there are things about Richard's business that you need to understand.""

I looked at Michael.

He was standing nearby, listening.

"Patricia, I don't think that's a good idea.""

"Please. Just give me twenty minutes.""

Her voice cracked.

"Your father is in danger.""

My heart stopped.

"What?""

"Richard has been receiving threats from the people financing his company. He borrowed money he couldn't repay. If he doesn't deliver the Naples property as collateral, they could destroy him.""

I looked at Dad.

He had heard enough to understand.

"Where do you want to meet?"" I asked.

"The Coral Gables house. I'll be waiting.""

I ended the call.

Michael immediately shook his head.

"Daniel, don't go alone.""

"I'm not planning to.""

Dad stood.

"Neither am I.""

Forty minutes later, we arrived at the Whitmore residence.

It was a sprawling modern mansion with a circular driveway and a fountain in the center.

The front door opened before we reached it.

Patricia stood there wearing a cream-colored blouse and black trousers.

Her makeup was smudged.

She looked as though she hadn't slept.

"Thank you for coming," she said.

She led us into a large living room.

Expensive paintings covered the walls. A crystal chandelier hung above a marble coffee table.

Yet the room felt strangely empty.

Patricia sat down.

"I don't know where to begin.""

Michael remained standing.

"Start with the financial arrangement.""

She nodded.

"Richard's company started experiencing serious problems eighteen months ago. He expanded into three new markets and borrowed heavily to finance the purchases.""

"How much?"" I asked.

"Approximately twelve million dollars.""

Dad frowned.

"That doesn't explain why my property was involved.""

Patricia looked at him.

"Richard believed your estate could secure enough financing to keep the company alive.""

"He had no right to believe that.""

"I know.""

She covered her face.

"I told him it was wrong.""

I looked at her.

"When?""

"Several months ago.""

"Before or after Vanessa started dating me?""

Patricia lowered her hands.

"Before.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"So you knew.""

"Yes.""

"Did you know about the wedding?""

She nodded.

"Richard believed marriage would make everything easier. He thought Vanessa would eventually persuade you to convince your father.""

I stared at her.

"Was that why you encouraged our relationship?""

Patricia started crying.

"I wanted my daughter to be happy.""

"That's not an answer.""

She looked at me.

"At first, I thought she genuinely loved you. And I believe she did. But Richard kept pushing. He told her that your father was sitting on an enormous asset while their family was facing financial ruin.""

Dad spoke quietly.

"Did you know about the forged documents?""

Patricia nodded.

"Yes.""

The room became silent.

I stared at her.

"Then why didn't you stop them?""

She reached into her handbag.

"I tried.""

She removed a small flash drive.

"Three weeks ago, I copied several emails from Richard's office computer. I was going to give them to his attorney, but I was afraid.""

Michael accepted the drive.

"What's on it?""

"Everything. The original plan, the loan negotiations, the payments to Ethan Brooks, and the messages between Richard and Vanessa.""

I felt sick.

"Payments to Ethan?""

Patricia nodded.

"Richard paid him $120,000 to prepare the legal paperwork.""

Michael's expression hardened.

"That's a substantial amount.""

"There was another payment, too.""

She looked at me.

"Richard transferred $85,000 to Vanessa's consulting company. She was supposed to use it to persuade you to sign the financial agreement.""

I thought about the bank statement.

The transfer that had cleared two days earlier.

My wife's company.

I looked at Patricia.

"Why did you call me?""

She took a shaky breath.

"Because Richard has a second plan.""

Dad leaned forward.

"What plan?""

Patricia looked toward the hallway.

Then she lowered her voice.

"He's going to claim that Daniel and Vanessa already agreed to sell the Naples estate.""

Michael frowned.

"On what basis?""

"The document you found. Richard believes he can use it to convince the lenders that the property is effectively under his control.""

Dad stood.

"That's impossible.""

Patricia shook her head.

"He's already told them the transfer is being finalized.""

I felt my pulse racing.

"Who are these lenders?""

She hesitated.

"An investment group called Meridian Capital Partners.""

Michael immediately looked at Dad.

"Robert, have you heard of them?""

Dad nodded slowly.

"I've seen that name in the investigation file.""

Michael opened his briefcase.

"That's concerning.""

I looked between them.

"Why?""

Michael explained.

"Meridian isn't an ordinary bank. It's a private investment group. If Richard has made representations about your father's property, we need to establish exactly what he's promised them.""

Patricia suddenly stood.

"There's something else.""

She walked toward a cabinet and removed a thick blue folder.

"I found this in Richard's office yesterday.""

She handed it to Michael.

He opened it.

The first page contained a list of names.

The second contained a series of property addresses.

And the third showed a photograph of my father standing outside his Naples estate.

Beside the photograph was a handwritten note.

*OWNER: ROBERT CARTER. PRESSURE THROUGH SON.*

Dad stared at the page.

His face became completely still.

I looked at Patricia.

"Who wrote this?""

She shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Michael turned another page.

His expression changed.

"Daniel, I think you should see this.""

It was a printed calendar entry.

The date was two days after our wedding.

The title read:

*FINAL PROPERTY TRANSFER MEETING.*

The attendees included Richard Whitmore, Vanessa Carter, Ethan Brooks, and a representative from Meridian Capital Partners.

But there was something even more disturbing.

The location wasn't a law office.

It was the Naples estate itself.

And the meeting invitation contained one final instruction:

*Ensure Robert Carter is present. Obtain original property documents before departure.*

Dad slowly closed the folder.

Then he looked at me.

"Son, I think someone is planning to visit my house.""

My phone vibrated.

A new message had arrived from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of the Naples estate.

Someone had taken it that afternoon.

Below the photograph were eight words:

*YOUR FATHER SHOULD NOT GO HOME TONIGHT.*
