Chapter 4: The Two Million Dollar Secret

I stared at the bank statement.

My wife's name appeared beside a wire transfer for $2 million.

Vanessa Carter.

The transfer date was six weeks before our wedding.

I looked at the document, then at my wife.

"Vanessa, tell me this isn't real.""

She didn't answer.

Instead, she reached for the paper.

"Give me that.""

I pulled it away.

"Where did two million dollars go?""

Her father stepped forward.

"Daniel, there's a perfectly reasonable explanation.""

I turned toward him.

"I didn't ask you.""

Richard stopped.

Vanessa looked around the ballroom. Her carefully maintained wedding-day smile had disappeared. Her mascara was beginning to run, and the diamond earrings I'd bought her seemed suddenly out of place.

"Daniel, please. Not here.""

"You didn't mind humiliating my father here.""

She flinched.

I pointed at the statement.

"Two million dollars. Your name. A transfer six weeks before our wedding. Explain it.""

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

"My father needed temporary financial assistance.""

"From whom?""

She looked away.

"From an investment account.""

"What investment account?""

Richard interrupted.

"It was a private arrangement between family members.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Your family members don't include me, yet somehow my father's property is involved.""

Dad quietly pulled a chair away from the table.

"Sit down, Daniel. There's something you need to see.""

He opened his briefcase and removed a second folder.

Inside were copies of bank records, company filings, and several photographs.

One photograph showed Richard entering a private banking office in downtown Miami.

Another showed Vanessa leaving the same building two days later.

I looked at Dad.

"How did you get these?""

"My attorney obtained the financial records through the bank's investigation into the attempted fraudulent loan. Some of the documents were voluntarily provided by people who became concerned about the transactions.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"You're making it sound like a criminal operation.""

Dad didn't respond.

I opened the next page.

It showed a transfer from a company called Whitmore Development Holdings to an offshore investment account.

The account was registered under a company bearing Vanessa's maiden name.

I looked at her.

"What's Whitmore Development Holdings?""

She pressed her lips together.

Richard answered.

"It's one of my companies.""

"Then why is my wife's name attached to its financial transactions?""

Richard adjusted his cufflinks.

"Because Vanessa has always been involved in my business.""

I looked back at the statement.

"Why was she receiving money?""

Neither of them answered.

Then my best man, Michael, leaned toward me.

"Dan, look at the date.""

I did.

The transfer had happened on September 12.

The following morning, Vanessa had asked me to sign a document authorizing her to handle certain household financial matters after our marriage.

At the time, I'd thought it was ordinary paperwork.

Now I wondered whether that signature had been the beginning of something much bigger.

I turned to her.

"Did you use my information to open this account?""

Her eyes widened.

"No.""

"Did you use my signature?""

"Daniel, you're scaring me.""

"Answer the question.""

Richard slammed his hand against the table.

"That's enough! You're not going to interrogate my daughter in front of these people.""

Dad stood.

"Then perhaps you should have kept her name out of the documents.""

Richard pointed at him.

"You've spent your entire life fixing cars. Don't pretend you understand how major businesses operate.""

Dad looked at his old brown jacket.

Then he looked Richard directly in the eyes.

"You're right. I spent my life fixing things other people broke. Engines, transmissions, people's mistakes. Unfortunately, I can't repair a man's character.""

A few guests exchanged glances.

Richard's face turned crimson.

Vanessa began crying.

"Daniel, you have to understand. My father was desperate. His company was struggling, and I wanted to help him.""

I stared at her.

"So you took two million dollars?""

"No!""

"Then where did it come from?""

She hesitated.

"My father arranged it.""

"Through my father's property?""

She looked down.

That was answer enough.

Dad placed another document on the table.

"There's one more thing. The attempted loan wasn't the first time Richard tried to use my property.""

I turned toward him.

"What do you mean?""

"Three months ago, someone approached a development company about purchasing the Naples estate. They presented themselves as representatives of the property owner.""

My stomach tightened.

"Who?""

Dad slid a business card toward me.

Whitmore Development Holdings.

Richard's company.

Vanessa suddenly stopped crying.

"That wasn't supposed to happen.""

I looked at her.

"What wasn't supposed to happen?""

She covered her mouth.

Richard grabbed her arm.

"Vanessa, don't say another word.""

But she'd already said enough.

Dad slowly closed the folder.

"Daniel, I believe your wife knows considerably more about these transactions than she's telling you.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"Did you know about the forged loan application?""

She stared at me.

Then she whispered something I never expected to hear.

"I helped prepare it.""

The ballroom fell silent.

And before I could respond, my phone vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of the document I'd signed that morning.
