Chapter 6: The Document Nobody Was Supposed to See

For several seconds, nobody moved.

I looked at Richard.

"What did you just say?""

He rubbed his forehead.

"You're misunderstanding the arrangement.""

"Then explain it.""

Richard glanced at the guests.

Several had stopped pretending not to listen.

The wedding photographer stood near the entrance, his camera lowered.

Vanessa was crying openly now.

Richard lowered his voice.

"The property was supposed to be placed under a temporary development restriction. It would have protected the investment while we arranged financing.""

Dad shook his head.

"Without my consent?""

Richard looked irritated.

"Robert, you could have benefited from the arrangement.""

Dad gave him a cold stare.

"You tried to attach a legal claim to a property I own outright.""

"That isn't what happened.""

"Then why did your attorney submit documents claiming an existing financial interest?""

Richard said nothing.

I turned to Vanessa.

"Did you know about this?""

She nodded slightly.

I felt my stomach drop.

"How long?""

She wiped her face.

"Since August.""

"August?""

"Daniel, please let me explain.""

"We got engaged in July.""

She looked at the floor.

I took a step backward.

"So when you accepted my proposal, you already knew about your father's plan?""

"It wasn't a plan to hurt you!""

"Then what was it?""

She started crying harder.

"My father said your father had a valuable property that wasn't being used. He believed there was a way to make money from it without taking anything away from you.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Without taking anything away from me? You were trying to control a house I hadn't even been given.""

She reached for my arm.

"Daniel, I loved you.""

I moved away.

"Did you?""

She nodded desperately.

"Yes!""

"Then why did you tell your father to make sure I signed before my father changed his mind?""

Her expression collapsed.

She looked at Richard.

He closed his eyes.

I finally understood that neither of them had a convincing answer.

A few minutes later, the ballroom doors opened.

A tall man in a charcoal suit entered carrying a leather briefcase.

It was Michael Mitchell, my father's attorney.

He approached Dad and shook his hand.

"Robert. I'm sorry this happened.""

Dad nodded.

"Let's get this sorted out.""

Michael turned toward me.

"Daniel, I've reviewed the documents your father provided. I understand you've discovered some disturbing information.""

"Can someone please tell me exactly what's happening?""

He placed the briefcase on the table.

"Of course.""

He removed several papers.

"The property in Naples is owned by your father through a properly recorded trust. There are no outstanding mortgages, liens, or authorized development agreements.""

He paused.

"However, someone submitted an application claiming that Whitmore Development Holdings had a contractual interest in the estate.""

I looked at Richard.

"On what basis?""

Michael opened a folder.

"An alleged preliminary development agreement.""

Dad leaned forward.

"I never signed one.""

Michael nodded.

"We know. The signature appears to have been copied from an older document.""

Richard immediately interrupted.

"That agreement was prepared in good faith.""

Michael looked at him.

"Mr. Whitmore, I would strongly advise you not to make any further statements about documents currently under investigation.""

Richard's face turned pale.

Michael continued.

"The county rejected the application pending verification. But that's not the only concern.""

He pulled out another document.

"There's also an authorization signed by Daniel Carter.""

My mouth went dry.

"That's the document in the photograph.""

"Yes. It appears to have been submitted as supporting evidence for the proposed development agreement.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"You used my signature?""

She shook her head.

"I didn't submit it.""

"Who did?""

She looked toward her father.

Richard stared at the floor.

Michael placed a third document on the table.

"This is a copy of the email authorizing the submission.""

I read the sender's name.

Vanessa.

My wife.

The email was dated eleven days before the wedding.

It instructed Ethan Brooks to prepare the paperwork and submit it before the wedding ceremony.

I looked up.

"Why before the wedding?""

Michael answered before Vanessa could.

"Because after the marriage, the parties intended to rely on the marital financial agreement to support their claim that Daniel had authorized certain property-related decisions.""

I felt physically sick.

"So the wedding was part of the transaction.""

Michael didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at Dad.

"Robert, there's something else I think Daniel needs to know.""

Dad's expression grew serious.

"What is it?""

Michael opened a smaller envelope.

Inside was a printed letter bearing the logo of a private investment company.

The letter was addressed to Richard Whitmore.

It contained a proposed financing arrangement for twelve million dollars.

But the lender had included one condition.

The Naples estate had to be secured as collateral.

I looked at the date.

It was three days before our wedding.

Then I noticed the final paragraph.

It stated that the lender had already received a preliminary valuation and expected the property owner to execute the required authorization within thirty days.

I looked at Vanessa.

"You promised them my father's house?""

She shook her head.

"My father handled the negotiations.""

Richard snapped.

"Because you said Daniel would convince Robert to cooperate!""

The words came out before he could stop himself.

Everyone froze.

I slowly turned toward my wife.

"Convince my father?""

Vanessa's lips trembled.

Richard realized what he'd said.

He tried to recover.

"I meant that we expected a family discussion.""

Dad stepped closer.

"Richard, did you tell your daughter to marry my son so she could pressure me into transferring the estate?""

Richard said nothing.

Vanessa began crying again.

Then Michael quietly placed one final document in front of me.

It was a printed text conversation between Vanessa and Ethan Brooks.

The first message was dated two days before the wedding.

Vanessa had written:

Once we're married, Daniel won't suspect anything. His father is emotional about that property. If Daniel asks, I'll tell him it's for our future.

Ethan had replied:

And if Robert refuses?

Vanessa's response was only one sentence.

Then we'll make sure Daniel has a reason to convince him.

I stared at the screen.

My wife had not simply planned to benefit from a wealthy property.

She had planned to use my love for her as leverage against my father.

I looked at Dad.

He was standing quietly beside the broken wooden box, his hands resting on the back of a chair.

"Son," he said softly, "I'm sorry.""

I shook my head.

"You have nothing to apologize for.""

Then I turned toward Vanessa.

"Our marriage is over.""

She gasped.

"Daniel, you can't just throw away our marriage!""

"You threw away my father's dignity before you even knew what he owned.""

She grabbed my sleeve.

"Please! We can fix this!""

I gently removed her hand.

"No. You can explain yourself to the people who are investigating those documents.""

Michael gathered the papers.

"Daniel, before you make any final decisions, there's one more issue. The financial agreement you signed this morning may have been used in a way you didn't authorize. We need to review the original immediately.""

I looked at him.

"What do you mean?""

He opened his briefcase again.

And when he showed me the final page, I saw a clause that made my blood run cold.

It wasn't about the Naples property.

It wasn't about inheritance.

It was a provision granting Vanessa temporary authority over certain financial accounts if our marriage ended within the first ninety days.

I stared at the date.

Our marriage had begun less than two hours earlier.

Then my phone rang.

It was my bank.

I answered.

A woman's voice spoke urgently.

"Mr. Carter, we've detected an attempted transfer from your personal investment account. Before we proceed, we need to verify whether you authorized a withdrawal of $450,000.""

I looked directly at Vanessa.

She stopped crying.

May you like

And for the first time that day, she looked truly terrified.

*Because someone had just tried to take the money I'd spent ten years saving—and the attempted transfer had been made using my wife's newly acquired legal authority.*
