Chapter 3: The Email That Changed Everything
I read the email again.
Then a third time.
The ballroom seemed to disappear around me.
All I could see were those words.
MAKE SURE DANIEL SIGNS BEFORE HIS FATHER CHANGES HIS MIND.
I remembered that morning.
Vanessa had insisted we meet her attorney at the hotel before the ceremony.
She told me it was a routine document concerning our marital finances.
"Just standard paperwork, Daniel," she'd said while fixing her makeup in the bridal suite.
I remembered asking why it couldn't wait until after the honeymoon.
She had kissed my cheek.
"Because I want everything settled before we start our life together.""
I'd trusted her.
I'd signed the document.
And now my father's attorney was standing in front of me with evidence that my bride and her family had been investigating his property.
I looked at Vanessa.
"Tell me what I signed.""
She glanced at her father.
Richard immediately stepped forward.
"Daniel, this is being blown completely out of proportion.""
"Then explain it.""
"Your wife and I were discussing a possible investment opportunity.""
"Using my father's house?""
Richard rubbed his forehead.
"Your father has an extremely valuable asset. We believed there might be a way to develop the surrounding area.""
Dad let out a quiet laugh.
"That's an interesting description of attempting to secure a loan with forged documents.""
Richard's face hardened.
"Watch your accusations.""
Dad didn't flinch.
"My attorney has copies of everything.""
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
"Daniel, please. Can we talk somewhere private?""
I pulled away.
"No. You wanted this conversation in front of everyone when you humiliated my father. We can have it here.""
Several guests had started whispering.
My best man, Michael, approached from behind.
"Dan, are you okay?""
I shook my head.
"Not really.""
He glanced at the documents.
"What's going on?""
Before I could answer, Vanessa raised her voice.
"This is ridiculous! My father is being attacked because Robert Carter suddenly wants to pretend he's some billionaire!""
Dad quietly bent down and picked up a piece of the broken wooden box.
He brushed the dust from it with his thumb.
"I never pretended to be anything, Vanessa.""
He looked at her.
"I worked as a mechanic for thirty-eight years. I drove an old truck. I wore secondhand clothes. I never needed strangers to know what I owned.""
He paused.
"But I never expected the woman marrying my son to judge people by the price of their clothes.""
Nobody spoke.
Then Dad turned toward me.
"Daniel, there's something else.""
He handed me the remaining pages.
The first document was a copy of the agreement I'd signed that morning.
I scanned the heading.
MARITAL PROPERTY AND FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE AGREEMENT.
My eyes moved down the page.
The document contained a section concerning future gifts, inherited assets, and property acquired during marriage.
But one paragraph caught my attention.
It stated that any property transferred to me during the marriage could become subject to a separate financial arrangement if certain conditions were met.
I read it again.
"What does this mean?""
Dad pointed to the final paragraph.
"Your attorney should explain it, but the wording is concerning.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"You told me this was just a routine agreement.""
"It is!""
"Then why does it mention my father's future property?""
She crossed her arms.
"Because we're married. Everything we acquire should be discussed together.""
"That's not what you told me this morning.""
Her voice became sharper.
"Daniel, stop acting like I'm some criminal. I was protecting our future.""
I held up the email.
"Then explain this.""
Vanessa stared at it.
Her father moved closer.
"Give me that document.""
I stepped backward.
"No.""
Richard pointed a finger at me.
"Listen carefully, young man. You're making a very serious mistake. My family has a reputation, and I won't let some misunderstanding destroy it.""
Dad calmly interrupted.
"Then you should have considered that before involving my son's name in your financial arrangements.""
Richard turned toward him.
"You think that house makes you untouchable?""
"No," Dad replied.
"I think the truth makes me difficult to intimidate.""
Michael moved beside me.
"Daniel, maybe we should call the police.""
Vanessa immediately turned toward him.
"Stay out of this!""
Michael didn't move.
"He's my best friend. You just married him. I think I'm exactly where I need to be.""
I looked down at the email again.
There was a second paragraph beneath the subject line.
I hadn't noticed it before.
It read:
Once Daniel signs the agreement, we'll have access to the property discussions. Robert will eventually have to transfer the house if he wants to keep his son happy. By then, the wedding will be over, and Daniel won't walk away from me.
My fingers went numb.
I looked at Vanessa.
"Did you write this?""
She swallowed.
"Daniel...""
"Did you?""
She looked toward the guests.
Then she lowered her voice.
"You're taking everything out of context.""
"Which part?""
She didn't answer.
I turned to my father.
"Did you know about this before today?""
Dad nodded.
"My attorney discovered the loan application three weeks ago. We traced the documents to your father-in-law's company. Then we found the email.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
His eyes filled with sadness.
"Because I wanted to be certain. I didn't want to destroy your relationship based on suspicion.""
He glanced at Vanessa.
"I also hoped she would tell you the truth herself.""
Vanessa's face turned pale.
"You investigated me?""
Dad shook his head.
"No. I investigated the people attempting to use my property.""
Richard suddenly reached for the papers.
But Dad held them out of reach.
"Don't touch those.""
"Robert, you have no idea what you're interfering with.""
"I know exactly what I'm interfering with.""
Dad looked at me.
"I won't give you that house until you understand everything. And I certainly won't let anyone use it to control you.""
I felt something shift inside me.
All afternoon, I'd been trying to defend my marriage.
Now I was beginning to wonder whether there had ever been a marriage worth defending.
Vanessa stepped closer.
Her eyes were wet.
"Daniel, please. We can fix this.""
I looked at her.
"Did you marry me because you loved me?""
She hesitated.
Only for a second.
But it was long enough.
Then she whispered:
"Of course I did. But you have to understand what my father was going through.""
I stared at her.
"What was he going through?""
She looked at Richard.
He closed his eyes.
And then Vanessa said something that made even my father take a step backward.
"My father's company was going bankrupt, Daniel. The wedding wasn't supposed to happen until we had secured your father's property.""
I felt my heart pounding.
"Then why did you insist on marrying me today?""
Vanessa wiped her tears.
"Because if we postponed it, my father would have lost everything.""
Dad slowly reached into his jacket and removed one final document.
"Daniel," he said quietly, "there's a reason I brought this particular document to your wedding.""
He placed it on the table.
It wasn't another property deed.
It was a bank statement.
And the name listed as the recipient of the missing $2 million was not Richard Whitmore.
It was Vanessa Carter.
My wife's name.
My hands began to shake.
May you like
Because suddenly, I understood that her father's financial problems might not have been the only secret in our marriage.
*And I hadn't yet discovered where the money had gone.*
