Chapter 7: The $450,000 Disappearing Act
"Mr. Carter, are you still there?""
The bank representative's voice pulled me back into the moment.
I held the phone against my ear.
"Yes. I need you to tell me exactly what's happening.""
"My name is Sarah. I'm calling from the fraud prevention department. We received an electronic withdrawal request for $450,000 from your investment account approximately twenty minutes ago.""
"Who authorized it?""
There was a brief pause.
"The request was submitted through an account with delegated financial access.""
I looked at Vanessa.
She was standing beside her father, gripping his arm.
"Whose account?""
"Vanessa Carter.""
My stomach tightened.
"Don't process it.""
"Understood, sir. We can place an immediate security hold on the transaction. However, we'll need you to complete additional verification.""
"Do it. Freeze every withdrawal until I can speak with your legal representative.""
"Certainly. Is there any possibility that your wife submitted this request with your permission?""
I looked directly at Vanessa.
"No. Absolutely not.""
Sarah's tone became more serious.
"I'll document that statement.""
I ended the call.
The ballroom was silent.
Vanessa approached me.
"Daniel, please listen.""
I held up my hand.
"Don't.""
"I can explain the transfer.""
"Then explain it.""
She glanced at Michael Mitchell.
"Not in front of everyone.""
I laughed.
"You seem to have a problem with witnesses now.""
Richard stepped forward.
"Daniel, this is a family matter. There's no reason to involve the bank or lawyers.""
Michael closed his briefcase.
"Mr. Whitmore, the bank has already been involved. So has the county recording office. This is no longer simply a family disagreement.""
Richard pointed at him.
"You don't understand the financial arrangements.""
Michael remained calm.
"I understand that someone attempted to withdraw $450,000 from an account belonging to my client's new husband.""
Vanessa began shaking her head.
"That money was supposed to be moved temporarily.""
I turned toward her.
"Moved where?""
She hesitated.
"My father's business account.""
I stared at her.
"You were going to transfer almost half a million dollars to your father?""
"He needed it.""
"Did I agree to that?""
She lowered her eyes.
I stepped closer.
"Vanessa, look at me.""
She reluctantly raised her head.
"Did I agree?""
"No.""
The answer was barely audible.
I felt something inside me finally settle.
Not anger.
Not even sadness.
Just clarity.
Michael took out his phone.
"Daniel, I recommend we preserve all communications relating to this transaction. Don't delete anything, and don't attempt to access any account connected to the disputed authorization without speaking to your bank and attorney.""
I nodded.
Then he turned toward Vanessa.
"Mrs. Carter, I would also advise you not to contact any witnesses about the documents we've discovered.""
Vanessa looked offended.
"You're treating me like a criminal!""
Michael answered carefully.
"I'm treating the situation seriously. The authorities will determine whether any laws were violated.""
Dad had remained quiet throughout the conversation.
He was sitting near the broken gift box, holding one of its wooden pieces.
Finally, he spoke.
"Vanessa, may I ask you something?""
She wiped her face.
"What?""
"When you first met Daniel, did you know about the house?""
She looked at him.
For a moment, I thought she might lie.
Then she nodded.
"Yes.""
Dad closed his eyes.
"How?""
"My father mentioned it.""
"When?""
She swallowed.
"Before Daniel proposed.""
I turned toward her.
"You knew about the property before we got engaged?""
She nodded again.
Dad looked down at the broken box.
"I see.""
His voice was quiet.
"Your mother would have been disappointed.""
Vanessa immediately reacted.
"Don't bring his mother into this!""
Dad slowly raised his head.
"She was the reason I built that house. Every room was designed with her in mind.""
"I didn't know that!""
"You knew enough to ask about its value.""
Vanessa's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Richard suddenly grabbed his daughter by the elbow.
"We're leaving.""
Michael stepped aside but spoke firmly.
"Before you go, I need to inform you that the relevant documents have been preserved. Any further communication regarding the property should go through legal counsel.""
Richard ignored him.
He pulled Vanessa toward the ballroom entrance.
But she stopped.
She turned around and looked at me.
"Daniel, if you let your father do this, you'll lose everything.""
I stared at her.
"What exactly am I supposed to lose?""
"Our marriage. Our future. Everything we planned.""
I looked at the diamond ring on her finger.
Then at my father's old jacket.
"I already lost something today.""
She started crying again.
But this time, I didn't move toward her.
Richard dragged her through the doors.
The ballroom remained quiet.
Michael gathered the remaining paperwork.
"Daniel, we need to get you to my office tonight. There are several urgent matters to address.""
I nodded.
Then Dad gently touched my shoulder.
"Come with me, son.""
We walked toward the terrace.
The Miami sunset was fading behind the buildings.
For several minutes, neither of us spoke.
Finally, I asked the question that had been bothering me.
"Dad, why didn't you tell me about the house earlier?""
He looked out at the water.
"Because I wanted to give it to you when you were ready. Not when someone else wanted it.""
I swallowed.
"And the money?""
He turned toward me.
"That money was yours, son. You worked for it. Nobody had the right to take it.""
I felt tears building.
"I'm sorry I didn't see what was happening.""
Dad shook his head.
"You trusted someone you loved. That's not something you should be ashamed of.""
My phone vibrated.
A message from Michael.
He had just received an update from the bank.
The attempted $450,000 withdrawal had been frozen.
But there was another transaction.
A smaller transfer of $85,000 had already cleared two days earlier.
And the recipient account belonged to a company I had never heard of.
*Whitmore Family Consulting.*
I looked at Dad.
"There's more.""
He sighed.
"I was afraid there would be.""
Then my phone rang again.
This time, it was my mother-in-law.
May you like
And her first words were:
"Daniel, whatever Vanessa did, you need to understand that she wasn't the one who started this.""
