Chapter 5: The Signature That Could Cost Me Everything

I read the message twice.

Then I looked at Vanessa.

"What did you do with my signature?""

She immediately shook her head.

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

I held up my phone.

"Someone just sent me a picture of the agreement I signed this morning.""

Richard stepped closer.

"Let me see.""

"No.""

I opened the photograph.

It showed the last page of the marital financial agreement.

My signature was clearly visible at the bottom.

But there was something else.

A second document had been photographed beside it.

It was an authorization form bearing my name and personal information.

I had never seen it before.

At the top, it read:

*PROPERTY ACQUISITION AND FINANCIAL REPRESENTATION AUTHORIZATION.*

I felt sick.

"Vanessa, what is this?""

She stared at the photograph.

Her expression changed.

"Where did you get that?""

"That's my question.""

Richard grabbed his phone.

"Everyone needs to calm down.""

Michael stepped between him and me.

"Maybe you should stop telling everyone what to do.""

Richard glared at him.

"Do you know who I am?""

Michael shrugged.

"At this point, I don't think anybody cares.""

I almost laughed.

Almost.

Dad took the phone from my hand and examined the photograph.

"This is serious.""

I turned toward him.

"Could they use that document to take the house?""

"Not without proper legal authority and verification. But someone appears to be trying to create the impression that they have your authorization.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"That's not what it is.""

"Then explain it," I demanded.

She wiped her cheeks.

"My father wanted to negotiate a development agreement. He thought your father might eventually agree to sell the property.""

"Then why forge documents?""

"He didn't forge anything!""

Dad calmly opened his folder.

"Vanessa, the authorization contains a signature identical to Daniel's, but the document was never presented to him for approval.""

She turned toward Richard.

"Dad, tell them.""

Richard looked away.

I felt a chill move through my chest.

"Tell me what?""

Vanessa grabbed my hand.

"Daniel, listen. My father has been having financial problems for almost a year. His company expanded too quickly. He borrowed money to purchase several dealerships, and the market changed.""

"How much does he owe?""

She hesitated.

"Almost twelve million dollars.""

I stared at her.

"And you thought my father's house would solve that?""

"Not just the house.""

I pulled my hand away.

"What else?""

She looked down.

"Your father's property was supposed to be the beginning.""

I felt the room tilt.

"Beginning of what?""

Richard finally spoke.

"An investment partnership. The estate would have been used to secure financing. We would develop the surrounding land and repay the loan from the profits.""

Dad shook his head.

"My property isn't available for development.""

Richard ignored him.

"With the right investors, we could have turned it into something worth fifteen million.""

I stared at him.

"You tried to mortgage a house you don't own because you thought you could make more money?""

Richard's voice rose.

"I was trying to save my company!""

Dad remained composed.

"By risking my son's future?""

Richard pointed at him.

"You have no idea what it means to employ hundreds of people!""

Dad nodded slowly.

"I understand what it means to work for every dollar you earn. I also understand that you don't save a business by stealing someone else's property.""

Vanessa began sobbing.

"Daniel, I never wanted things to happen this way.""

I looked at her.

"Then why did you marry me?""

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

I remembered our first date.

She'd laughed at my terrible jokes and told me she loved how close I was to my father.

She'd said she wanted a family just like ours.

Now I wondered whether she'd been studying us from the beginning.

Dad placed a hand on my shoulder.

"Son, you need to speak with your own attorney before signing or acknowledging anything else.""

I nodded.

"I will.""

Then I noticed another detail in the photograph.

At the bottom of the authorization form was a witness signature.

I zoomed in.

The name was unmistakable.

Ethan Brooks.

Vanessa's personal attorney.

I looked at her.

"Why did Ethan witness this?""

She swallowed.

"He was helping with the paperwork.""

"What paperwork?""

She didn't answer.

Dad took out his phone.

"I know Ethan. He's handled several transactions for Whitmore Development Holdings.""

Richard suddenly looked nervous.

"Robert, don't involve other people in this.""

Dad ignored him.

He dialed a number.

"Michael Mitchell? It's Robert Carter. I need you to come to the hotel immediately. Bring the original property investigation file.""

He listened.

Then his expression changed.

"Yes. Tonight. And bring the document from the county recording office.""

He ended the call.

I frowned.

"What document?""

Dad looked at me.

"The one showing who attempted to register an interest in my Naples property.""

Vanessa stepped backward.

Richard's champagne glass slipped from his fingers and shattered against the marble.

Dad continued.

"Apparently, someone submitted paperwork to the county two weeks ago.""

My heart pounded.

"Who submitted it?""

Dad looked at Vanessa.

"Your wife's attorney.""

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Then Richard whispered:

"That was supposed to remain confidential.""

I turned toward him.

"What was supposed to remain confidential?""

He stared at me.

And finally admitted the one thing that made the entire situation even worse.

"They weren't trying to borrow money against the house, Daniel.""

May you like

He swallowed.

"They were trying to make it legally impossible for your father to sell it without our permission.""
