Chapter 14: The Last Deal Richard Whitmore Ever Made

By the following morning, Michael had assembled an emergency legal team.

Elena had provided the original trust amendment, old correspondence, and records of Richard's previous property dealings.

The documents painted a disturbing picture.

Richard had approached multiple families over the years, offering attractive development agreements.

Some had accepted.

Others had refused.

Several had later discovered that documents bearing their signatures had been altered or submitted without their permission.

My father's property was the final obstacle in Richard's proposed coastal development.

But the most important discovery came from an email Ethan forwarded that morning.

Richard had written:

Once the Carter estate is secured, the Meridian financing will cover our outstanding obligations. The remaining properties can be acquired within six months.

Michael read the email twice.

"He's trying to use one property to finance the acquisition of several others.""

Dad frowned.

"Those families have lived there for generations.""

I looked at the list.

Some addresses belonged to retired couples. Others belonged to small businesses.

People who had no idea their homes had become part of Richard's financial plan.

"What happens now?"" I asked.

Michael answered.

"We'll provide the evidence to the relevant authorities, challenge the disputed filings, and seek appropriate protection for the trust property.""

Elena nodded.

"Those families deserve to know what's happening.""

Dad looked at her.

"Will you help us?""

She smiled sadly.

"Of course. Margaret would never forgive me if I walked away again.""

Three days later, Richard requested an emergency meeting.

He wanted to meet at the Whitmore corporate office in Miami.

Michael advised against making any private agreement.

But we agreed to attend with legal representation.

I walked into the conference room with Dad, Michael, and Elena.

Richard was already seated at the head of the table.

Vanessa sat beside him.

She looked exhausted.

Her expensive wedding dress had been replaced by a plain black suit.

When she saw me, she immediately stood.

"Daniel.""

I didn't respond.

Richard gestured toward the chairs.

"Let's get this over with.""

Michael placed a folder on the table.

"Before we discuss anything, we need to establish that this meeting is being documented.""

Richard frowned.

"That's unnecessary.""

"Then we have nothing to discuss.""

Richard reluctantly agreed.

He leaned back.

"Robert, I think we can resolve this without destroying two families.""

Dad looked at him.

"You attempted to use my property without permission.""

Richard spread his hands.

"I made a business mistake.""

"You forged documents.""

"I relied on my attorney.""

"You sent people into my home.""

Richard's expression hardened.

"I had nothing to do with that.""

Michael slid a copy of the security report across the table.

"Then perhaps you can explain why your company vehicle was photographed outside the estate on the night the original documents disappeared.""

Richard looked at the photograph.

For the first time, he had no immediate response.

Elena spoke.

"You haven't changed, Richard.""

He turned toward her.

"Elena. I didn't expect to see you.""

"That's because you spent forty years making sure I stayed away.""

Richard gave a dismissive laugh.

"This is ridiculous. Your sister and I had a business disagreement.""

Elena opened her folder.

"Then perhaps you'd like to explain these documents.""

She placed the old property records on the table.

Richard's face changed.

"I don't know what those are.""

"Yes, you do.""

She pointed to an altered purchase agreement from forty years earlier.

"You tried to claim that Margaret had approved a sale she never agreed to.""

Richard looked at her.

"That was a long time ago.""

"And you've been doing the same thing ever since.""

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

"Dad, maybe we should stop.""

Richard turned sharply.

"Stay out of this.""

She looked at me.

"Daniel, I need to tell you something.""

I remained silent.

She continued.

"I knew about the original property dispute. My father told me the story when I was younger. He said your family had cost him a major business opportunity.""

I stared at her.

"So you knew who I was before we met?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

My chest tightened.

"How long?""

"Several months before our first date.""

I looked at Dad.

He was watching her carefully.

Vanessa continued.

"My father showed me your photograph and told me that your family owned the Naples estate. He said getting close to you could finally resolve a problem he'd been carrying for years.""

I felt sick.

"Was any of it real?""

She began crying.

"Some of it was.""

"Which part?""

She looked down.

"I did fall in love with you.""

I shook my head.

"You knew about the property before you knew me.""

"I know.""

"You lied about your family's business. You helped prepare false documents. You tried to access my money. And you humiliated the man who raised me.""

She covered her face.

"I know.""

Richard slammed his hand on the table.

"Enough! Vanessa, you're not going to destroy everything because of some emotional attachment.""

She turned toward him.

"You promised me this was legal!""

Richard stared.

"You knew what we were doing.""

"I thought we were negotiating a development agreement. I didn't know you were using my husband's signature!""

Richard stood.

"Sit down.""

"No!""

Her voice shook.

"You told me Daniel would eventually agree. You told me Robert would be grateful for the investment. You never told me about the forged documents.""

Richard pointed at her.

"Watch what you say.""

Michael calmly interrupted.

"Mr. Whitmore, I recommend you stop making threats.""

Richard turned toward him.

"You're all making a terrible mistake.""

Elena placed another document on the table.

"There's one more thing, Richard.""

He looked at her.

She slid forward a letter.

It was from Meridian Capital Partners.

The lender had formally withdrawn from the proposed financing arrangement pending investigation of the submitted documents.

A second letter came from another financial institution.

Then a third.

Richard's company was losing access to the financing it needed.

His expression collapsed.

"You did this.""

Elena shook her head.

"No. You did.""

Richard looked at Dad.

"Robert, you have enough money. Why are you doing this to me?""

Dad slowly stood.

"Because you thought a man's worth could be measured by how much money he had.""

Richard laughed bitterly.

"You think you're better than me?""

"No.""

Dad looked directly at him.

"I think I raised my son better than you raised your daughter.""

The room fell silent.

Then Michael received a phone call.

He listened carefully.

"Understood.""

He ended the call and turned toward us.

"The authorities have confirmed receipt of the evidence. They've also requested additional records from Richard's company.""

Richard's face went pale.

Michael continued.

"Additionally, the attempted property filing has been formally challenged, and the trust's legal representatives have requested appropriate restrictions against any unauthorized transaction.""

Richard pushed his chair backward.

"This meeting is over.""

He grabbed his briefcase.

But Vanessa remained seated.

She was staring at me.

"Daniel, please.""

I looked at her.

"What?""

She removed her wedding ring.

"I know I don't deserve forgiveness. But I want you to know I never wanted you to get hurt.""

I looked at the ring.

Then I looked at her.

"You didn't have to want me hurt to hurt me.""

She began crying.

I turned toward the door.

But before we left, Dad stopped beside Richard.

He spoke quietly.

"Forty years ago, Margaret gave me one instruction. Protect our family and never let money become more important than people.""

He paused.

"I kept that promise.""

Then he walked out.

I followed him.

For the first time since my wedding, I felt that we were finally moving forward.

But outside the building, Michael received another message.

It was from Ethan Brooks.

The message contained a photograph of a newly signed document.

Richard had apparently transferred control of his remaining company assets to a private holding corporation.

The corporation's registered owner was not Richard.

It was Vanessa.

Michael stared at the photograph.

"That's interesting.""

I frowned.

"What?""

He turned the screen toward me.

"Richard may be preparing to shift responsibility for the remaining assets.""

I looked at Vanessa through the glass conference-room doors.

She was still sitting at the table.

Then Michael added something that made my stomach tighten.

"The company was registered yesterday. And the transfer document appears to have been signed before Richard knew we had Elena's evidence.""

I looked back at Dad.

"Could Vanessa be involved in another scheme?""

Dad sighed.

"Son, until we know the truth, don't assume anything.""

Michael enlarged the document.

At the bottom was a clause transferring responsibility for all outstanding company debts to the new holding corporation.

May you like

And beside the clause was Vanessa's signature.

*She might have been a victim of her father's plan. But she had just become the legal owner of everything he was trying to leave behind.*
