Chapter 9: The Person Behind the Plan
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The words hung in the air.
Someone in my family helped her.
I looked around the room.
My mother.
My friends.
My relatives.
People who had watched me raise Lily alone.
People who knew what she had been through.
"Claire.""
My voice was low.
"Are you sure?""
"Yes.""
"Who?""
She hesitated.
"I don't want to say without proof.""
I closed my eyes.
"Then tell me what you know.""
Claire took a breath.
"The original documents Vanessa created were different.""
Robert nodded slowly.
"That's true.""
Claire continued.
"But later, additional pages were added.""
"By who?""
"I saw the name attached to the file.""
My heart raced.
"What name?""
She went quiet.
Then said:
"Someone named Margaret Carter.""
The room froze.
I turned slowly.
My mother.
Her face changed.
Not surprise.
Not confusion.
Fear.
"Mom?""
She looked away.
And that was enough.
My voice broke.
"Mom?""
She took a step back.
"Daniel, please.""
I couldn't believe it.
"Please what?""
Lily looked between us.
"Daddy?""
I immediately softened.
"It's okay, sweetheart.""
But it wasn't.
Nothing was okay.
My own mother.
The person who had helped me raise Lily.
The person who had defended her all her life.
I looked at her.
"Tell me I misunderstood.""
My mother closed her eyes.
"I never wanted this.""
The room became silent.
Vanessa whispered,
"Margaret.""
My mother looked at her.
And for the first time, I saw anger between them.
"You lied to me.""
Vanessa looked shocked.
"What?""
My mother stepped forward.
"You told me Daniel was struggling.""
"I was trying to help.""
"No.""
My mother's voice shook.
"You told me Lily needed more support than you could provide.""
I stared at her.
"What did you do?""
My mother started crying.
"I thought I was protecting you.""
"By helping Vanessa?""
"No.""
She looked at Lily.
"By making sure someone was prepared if something happened.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
She reached into her purse.
And pulled out another envelope.
My stomach dropped.
Not another envelope.
Not another secret.
She handed it to me.
"I found out what Vanessa was doing three weeks ago.""
I looked at her.
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I didn't know who to trust.""
That answer hurt.
But I understood fear.
I understood confusion.
What I didn't understand was silence.
I opened the envelope.
Inside were copies of messages.
Between Vanessa and another person.
The first message was enough to make my hands shake.
"Once Daniel signs the marriage papers, everything becomes easier.""
Another message:
"Margaret will handle the emotional side. I will handle the legal side.""
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked terrified.
But not because she was caught.
Because someone else was involved.
I turned the page.
Then I saw the name.
Not Margaret.
Not Robert.
Someone else.
Someone I knew.
Someone who had hugged me before the ceremony.
Someone who had smiled at Lily.
The final message read:
"After the wedding, Daniel won't be the one making decisions anymore.""
Underneath it was the sender's name.
May you like
I stopped breathing.
Because it was someone I had invited to stand beside me on my wedding day.
