Chapter 6: The Man in the Photograph

The ballroom disappeared around me.

The music.

The flowers.

The guests.

Everything became background noise.

All I could see was the photograph on my phone.

Vanessa sitting at a table.

Smiling.

Across from a man I had never seen.

My first thought wasn't jealousy.

It was confusion.

Because the expression on Vanessa's face wasn't the expression of someone having a casual conversation.

She looked serious.

Focused.

Like she was making a plan.

I looked up.

"Who is he?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

"Who is he?""

She glanced around.

"Not here.""

I almost laughed.

"Not here?""

I held up my phone.

"My daughter was removed from my wedding ceremony. You hid plans about her future from me. And now I find out you've been meeting someone secretly.""

"It's not like that.""

"Then what is it?""

She stayed silent.

That silence was becoming familiar.

Emily stepped back, giving us space.

My mother came closer.

"Daniel?""

I shook my head.

"I need to know.""

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

"His name is Robert.""

"Who is Robert?""

She looked down.

"A consultant.""

"For what?""

She hesitated.

"For family planning.""

The words made my skin crawl.

"What kind of family planning?""

She didn't answer.

I looked at the photo again.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I knew you would react like this.""

"Like what?""

"Like you are right now.""

I stared at her.

"You mean asking questions?""

She looked frustrated.

"You don't understand.""

"Then explain.""

She looked toward Lily.

And something inside me snapped.

"Do not look at my daughter like she is the reason for this.""

Vanessa immediately looked away.

I walked closer.

"What was Robert helping you plan?""

Her voice dropped.

"Your life after marriage.""

I froze.

"My life?""

"Yes.""

"Without me?""

She swallowed.

"I was trying to prepare.""

"For what?""

She didn't answer.

Then someone behind us spoke.

"I can answer that.""

Everyone turned.

A man stood near the entrance of the ballroom.

Late forties.

Gray suit.

Holding a folder.

Vanessa's face lost all color.

"Robert.""

The man looked uncomfortable.

"Vanessa, this has gone too far.""

I stared at him.

"You know who I am?""

He nodded.

"Daniel Carter.""

"And you know my daughter?""

He looked at Lily.

Then quickly looked away.

"I know about her situation.""

My hands tightened.

"Her situation?""

Robert immediately corrected himself.

"Her needs.""

"No.""

My voice hardened.

"Try again.""

The room was silent.

Robert opened the folder.

"I was hired to evaluate future arrangements.""

"By Vanessa?""

He didn't answer.

That was enough.

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Robert, don't.""

He looked at her.

"You told me you had Daniel's agreement.""

My heart stopped.

"What?""

Robert looked confused.

"You said Daniel wanted to explore options.""

I turned toward Vanessa.

"Options?""

She looked terrified.

"No, Daniel. It's not what you think.""

But Robert had already opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Plans.

Notes.

Schedules.

And one sentence written at the top of the first page.

"Goal: Create a lifestyle where Daniel can move forward without constant caregiving responsibilities.""

I felt numb.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Without my daughter?""

She started crying.

"No.""

But she couldn't explain.

Because the words were already there.

Then Robert flipped to the next page.

And his expression changed.

"Wait.""

Everyone looked at him.

He stared at the paper.

"Vanessa...""

"What?""

His face turned pale.

"This isn't the plan you gave me.""

The room went silent.

I stepped forward.

"What does that mean?""

Robert looked at the documents.

Then at Vanessa.

"There are changes here.""

"What changes?""

He slowly turned the page.

And whispered:

"Someone added a section about removing Daniel from decision-making entirely after the marriage.""

I felt my blood run cold.

Because suddenly...

May you like

This was no longer about my wedding.

It was about someone trying to take control of my entire life.
