Chapter 12: The Man Waiting Outside
The ballroom doors opened.
Everyone turned.
But nobody walked in.
The hallway was empty.
That somehow felt worse.
I looked at Claire's message.
Then toward the entrance.
"He knows.""
Those words repeated in my head.
Richard knew.
I looked at my mother.
"Did you invite him?""
She looked terrified.
"No.""
"Then how is he here?""
Nobody answered.
Marcus stepped closer.
"Daniel, we need to get Lily out.""
I looked at him.
For the first time all day, I saw genuine fear on his face.
Not guilt.
Fear.
"Why?""
Marcus looked toward the hallway.
"Because Richard doesn't lose.""
The words bothered me.
"You knew this?""
Marcus shook his head.
"Not everything.""
"Then tell me what you know.""
He hesitated.
"I knew Richard was angry after your father died.""
"Angry about what?""
"The family business.""
I frowned.
"What does that have to do with me?""
Marcus looked at Lily.
"Everything.""
My heart sank.
I picked up Lily.
Not literally.
But emotionally.
Every protective instinct I had turned on.
I moved beside her.
"No one gets near my daughter.""
My mother started crying.
"Daniel, I should have told you.""
I looked at her.
"Yes.""
She nodded.
"I know.""
The honesty hurt.
But it mattered.
Then the ballroom doors opened.
Slowly.
A man stepped inside.
Richard Carter.
Late sixties.
Perfect suit.
Calm expression.
Like he wasn't walking into chaos.
Like he belonged there.
Everyone went silent.
He smiled.
"Daniel.""
I stared at him.
"What are you doing here?""
He looked around.
"Attending my nephew's wedding.""
I laughed once.
"There is no wedding anymore.""
His smile faded slightly.
"That's unfortunate.""
I stepped forward.
"You planned this.""
Richard looked at me.
"I planned nothing.""
"Claire told me everything.""
For the first time, his expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
He knew Claire.
"You should be careful who you trust.""
I stared.
"You threatened her?""
"No.""
He walked closer.
"I warned her.""
Marcus moved between us.
"Richard.""
Richard looked at him.
"You failed.""
Marcus looked ashamed.
"I know.""
I felt anger rise.
"Failed at what?""
Richard looked at me.
Then at Lily.
And his next words made my blood run cold.
"At making you understand that some responsibilities are too heavy for one person.""
I stepped forward.
"My daughter is not a responsibility.""
Richard smiled.
"That's where you're wrong.""
Nobody spoke.
He continued.
"She is the reason you never moved forward.""
I felt Lily's hand grab mine.
I immediately turned away from him.
"You don't talk about her.""
Richard ignored me.
"Your father made the same mistake.""
My face changed.
"What?""
"He let emotions control business decisions.""
I stared.
"This was never about Lily.""
Richard smiled.
"Of course it was.""
He looked around the room.
"It was about what happens when a man refuses to let go.""
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Claire.
I opened it.
One sentence.
"Daniel, ask Richard why he knows about Lily's medical records.""
I looked up.
Richard saw my expression.
May you like
And for the first time...
The confident man standing in front of me looked nervous.
