Chapter 11: The Original Plan

The ballroom had become a courtroom.

Everyone was waiting for answers.

But I wasn't sure I wanted them anymore.

Every answer brought another betrayal.

Every secret opened another door.

I looked at Marcus.

"You said you were helping.""

He nodded.

"I was wrong.""

"Why?""

He looked at Lily.

"Because I trusted the wrong person.""

I stared at him.

"Who?""

Marcus hesitated.

Then looked at Vanessa.

She immediately shook her head.

"No.""

That reaction told me more than words.

Marcus noticed.

And sighed.

"Vanessa didn't start everything.""

I looked at her.

"Then who did?""

Nobody answered.

My mother stepped forward.

"I need to tell you something.""

I looked at her.

Another secret.

Another painful truth.

"Go ahead.""

She took a deep breath.

"Vanessa approached me six months ago.""

I frowned.

"Six months?""

"Before she proposed.""

My stomach tightened.

"Why?""

My mother looked ashamed.

"She said she wanted to understand our family.""

"That sounds innocent.""

"It wasn't.""

She looked at Lily.

"She asked questions.""

"What questions?""

My mother's voice became quieter.

"About your finances.""

The room went silent.

"About your house.""

I felt cold.

"And?""

She swallowed.

"About what would happen if you weren't able to care for Lily.""

I closed my eyes.

I finally understood.

This was never about a wedding.

The wedding was just the final step.

Vanessa had been studying my life.

Planning.

Waiting.

Robert opened his folder again.

"I need to look at something.""

He flipped through the pages.

Then stopped.

"Wait.""

Everyone turned.

"What?""

He looked confused.

"This isn't Vanessa's original request.""

I walked toward him.

"What do you mean?""

"The first consultation.""

He pulled out a document.

"She contacted me about financial planning after marriage.""

"That sounds bad enough.""

"It does.""

He looked serious.

"But the custody language was added later.""

"By who?""

Robert looked at the paper.

"The request came from another person.""

My heart started pounding.

"Who?""

He turned the document around.

At the bottom was a signature.

A name.

A person I recognized immediately.

I stared.

"No.""

My mother looked at the paper.

Then covered her mouth.

"That can't be.""

I looked at her.

"You know this person?""

She didn't answer.

"Mom.""

She whispered:

"Yes.""

The room waited.

Finally, she said the name.

"Richard.""

My face changed.

Richard.

My father's older brother.

My uncle.

The man who had attended every family event.

The man who had hugged Lily and called her his "little princess.""

The man who had given me advice after my divorce.

I felt sick.

"Why would Uncle Richard do this?""

Robert looked at the documents.

"I don't know.""

Then Claire called again.

I answered immediately.

"Claire.""

Her voice was urgent.

"Daniel, I found something.""

"What?""

"The person who created the first plan wasn't Vanessa.""

My heart stopped.

"Who was it?""

A pause.

Then:

"Richard Carter.""

The room went silent.

Claire continued.

"Vanessa was brought into the plan later.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

Not angry.

Terrified.

"Why?""

Claire's voice dropped.

"Because Richard needed someone close enough to you to make the marriage happen.""

I felt my stomach turn.

"So Vanessa...""

"Was a part of it.""

I looked at my daughter.

Then at the people around me.

My family.

My friends.

The woman I almost married.

All connected by a plan I never saw coming.

Then Claire said the one thing that made my blood run cold.

"Daniel, you need to leave that building.""

"Why?""

"Because Richard is there.""

I froze.

"What?""

May you like

Her voice became urgent.

"He knows you found out.""
