Chapter 7: The Signature I Never Gave

The room felt smaller than it had a few minutes ago.

The flowers, the lights, the elegant decorations that had taken months to arrange all suddenly looked fake.

Because behind the perfect wedding image was a plan I had never agreed to.

A plan about my daughter.

A plan about my future.

A plan that somehow placed Vanessa in control of decisions she had no right to make.

I looked at Robert.

"Explain.""

He swallowed.

"I need to understand something first.""

"What?""

"Did you ever sign anything?""

The question confused me.

"Sign what?""

Robert looked down at the papers.

"Any agreement related to Lily's care, your financial decisions, or future arrangements?""

"No.""

His face became serious.

"Then these documents are not valid.""

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

"Robert, don't make this worse.""

I turned toward her.

"Worse?""

My voice echoed through the ballroom.

"You were planning my life without me.""

She shook her head.

"I was trying to help.""

"Help who?""

She didn't answer.

I walked closer.

"Because it wasn't Lily.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"You think I hate her.""

"I think you made her feel unwanted on the day she was supposed to feel loved.""

Vanessa looked toward Lily.

For a moment, her expression softened.

Then it disappeared.

"I never wanted to hurt her.""

I looked at my daughter.

"Then why did she cry alone in a hallway?""

No answer.

That was the only answer I needed.

Robert looked uncomfortable.

"I should tell you everything.""

Vanessa turned sharply.

"Robert.""

He ignored her.

"She contacted me two months ago.""

I stared at him.

"Two months?""

He nodded.

"She explained that after the marriage, there would be major lifestyle changes.""

"What kind of changes?""

Robert looked at Lily.

Then back at me.

"She wanted to reduce your responsibilities.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"Meaning?""

He hesitated.

"Meaning she believed Lily's needs were preventing you from having a normal life.""

The anger that rose inside me was almost impossible to control.

But then I heard a small voice.

"Daddy?""

I turned.

Lily was looking at me.

Not scared of Vanessa anymore.

Scared of my anger.

I immediately lowered myself beside her.

"I'm okay.""

She shook her head.

"No, you're not.""

That hurt.

Because she was right.

I took a breath.

"I just don't like people making decisions about us without asking.""

She nodded.

"Me neither.""

I held her hand.

And for the first time that day, I realized something.

Vanessa had spent months trying to make Lily smaller.

But Lily was the strongest person in that room.

My mother approached Robert.

"Where did these papers come from?""

Robert looked ashamed.

"Some were created by me. Some were modified later.""

"Modified by who?""

His eyes moved toward Vanessa.

She immediately said,

"Don't.""

Robert sighed.

"I don't know who changed them.""

That caught my attention.

"What do you mean?""

"There are sections I didn't write.""

He opened the folder.

"Someone added language about transferring authority.""

My stomach dropped.

"Authority over what?""

Robert pointed.

"Medical decisions. Financial decisions. Living arrangements.""

My face went cold.

"You said Vanessa wanted to help me.""

Robert looked at me.

"I thought she did.""

"Then what changed?""

Nobody answered.

Then Emily, the photographer, quietly spoke.

"I might know.""

Everyone turned.

She held her camera.

"Before the ceremony, Vanessa asked me to delete something.""

My eyes narrowed.

"What?""

Emily looked nervous.

"A photo.""

"What photo?""

She looked at Vanessa.

"One where Lily was standing beside Daniel.""

Vanessa's face changed.

"Emily.""

But Emily continued.

"She said it didn't fit the image she wanted.""

I felt something break inside me.

Not anger.

Not anymore.

Disappointment.

Because I finally understood.

Vanessa wasn't trying to build a family.

She was trying to build a picture.

And my daughter didn't fit inside it.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice spoke.

"Daniel Carter?""

"Yes.""

"You don't know me, but I worked with Vanessa before.""

I looked at everyone.

"Who are you?""

The woman paused.

Then whispered:

"I'm the person who discovered what she planned to do after the wedding.""

My grip tightened around the phone.

"What did she plan?""

May you like

The woman's voice dropped.

"She planned to make sure you never had custody of Lily again.""
