Chapter 5: The Secret Plan

I didn't read the message again.

I didn't need to.

Vanessa's reaction told me everything.

She wasn't confused.

She wasn't surprised.

She was terrified.

I held up my phone.

"Who is this?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

"Vanessa.""

Her lips parted.

"I don't know.""

I watched her carefully.

A few hours earlier, I would have believed that.

But not anymore.

Not after seeing my daughter sitting alone in that hallway.

Not after reading her words.

Not after realizing how carefully she had controlled everything.

Emily looked at me.

"Should I call someone?""

I shook my head.

"Not yet.""

I wanted answers.

Real answers.

I walked away from the crowd and toward the quiet corner of the ballroom.

Vanessa followed.

"Daniel, please.""

I turned.

"Tell me the truth.""

"I am.""

"No.""

My voice was calm.

Almost too calm.

"You've been telling me what you thought I wanted to hear.""

She looked hurt.

"I love you.""

I stared at her.

"Then why did you try to hide my daughter?""

She looked away.

"Because I was afraid.""

"Afraid of what?""

She hesitated.

Then she said something I never expected.

"That she would always come first.""

The words hit harder than any insult.

I stared at her.

"She is eight years old.""

"I know.""

"She needs her father.""

"I know.""

"Then why are you competing with a child?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I just wanted a marriage where I mattered.""

I shook my head.

"You mattered.""

"Did I?""

"Yes.""

"Then why was every conversation about Lily?""

I looked at her.

Because the answer was obvious.

Because Lily was my responsibility.

Because she was my daughter.

Because love wasn't something that ran out when another person needed it.

But Vanessa didn't understand that.

Or she didn't want to.

A movement caught my attention.

My daughter was watching us.

She immediately looked away when our eyes met.

That hurt more than anything.

She was afraid she had caused this.

I walked back to her.

"Lily.""

She looked up.

"Are we still going to be okay?""

I sat beside her.

"Yes.""

"But the wedding?""

I took a deep breath.

"The wedding is not the most important thing today.""

She looked at me.

"You promise?""

I nodded.

"I promise.""

At that moment, Emily walked over.

"Daniel.""

I stood.

"What?""

She looked uncomfortable.

"There is something else I should tell you.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What now?""

Emily lowered her voice.

"Vanessa didn't just give me instructions about photos.""

She opened her phone.

"She sent me a schedule.""

I frowned.

"A schedule?""

She nodded.

"Of the wedding day.""

She showed me.

The timeline looked normal at first.

Ceremony.

Reception.

Dinner.

Photos.

Then I saw one section.

After the wedding.

The heading made my blood run cold.

"Transition Plan.""

"What is this?""

Emily looked at Vanessa.

"She told me it was private.""

I read the notes.

"Move Daniel and Lily into a new routine after honeymoon.""

Then another line.

"Reduce dependency on grandparents.""

My eyebrows pulled together.

"What does that mean?""

Emily swallowed.

"I don't know.""

I kept reading.

Then I saw the final instruction.

"After marriage, begin discussing long-term care options.""

I looked up.

"Long-term care?""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Daniel, you don't understand.""

"No.""

I turned toward her.

"I don't.""

She looked desperate now.

"You have no idea how difficult the future will be.""

"For who?""

She didn't answer.

I pointed toward Lily.

"For her?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"No.""

But her voice wasn't convincing.

Then my phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time, it was from the same unknown number.

Attached was a photo.

A photo of Vanessa sitting in a restaurant three weeks earlier.

Across from a man I didn't recognize.

The caption underneath said:

"Ask her why she met him before the wedding.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She saw the picture.

May you like

And whispered one word.

"No.""
