Chapter 13: The Truth Hidden in the Records
I stared at Richard.
The room was silent.
Everyone was waiting for me to speak.
But I was waiting for him to explain.
I held up my phone.
"Why do you know about Lily's medical records?""
For the first time, Richard didn't have an immediate answer.
His confident expression disappeared.
Just for a moment.
But I saw it.
Fear.
He recovered quickly.
"Daniel, don't let strangers manipulate you.""
I stepped forward.
"Answer the question.""
He adjusted his jacket.
"I know about your family.""
"That's not an answer.""
"Your daughter has medical needs. Everyone knows that.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
My voice became stronger.
"Not everyone knows details.""
The room became still.
My mother looked at Richard.
"What did you do?""
Richard ignored her.
"Margaret, you don't understand.""
My mother looked hurt.
"No.""
She shook her head.
"I understand now.""
Richard looked annoyed.
"You are being emotional.""
The words hit my mother the same way they had hit me.
Because that was his pattern.
Anyone who disagreed with him was "emotional.""
Anyone who cared too much was considered weak.
I looked at Richard.
"You used my family.""
He laughed quietly.
"I tried to protect it.""
"By destroying it?""
"No.""
He pointed toward Lily.
"By making sure you had a future.""
My daughter moved closer to me.
I lowered myself beside her.
"Don't listen to him.""
She whispered,
"Daddy, why does everyone keep talking about me like I'm a problem?""
That question hurt more than anything.
I looked at Richard.
"You made an eight-year-old girl believe she was the reason people were unhappy.""
Richard's expression didn't change.
"Children adapt.""
I froze.
Nobody spoke.
Even Vanessa looked shocked.
"You really believe that?""
Richard looked at me.
"Life is not built around feelings.""
I stood.
"No.""
I shook my head.
"Life is built around people.""
Emily stepped forward.
"I recorded everything.""
Everyone looked at her.
Richard frowned.
"What?""
She held up her camera.
"The entire conversation.""
Richard's face changed.
"You were recording?""
"No.""
Emily looked at him.
"My camera was on.""
That small detail changed everything.
Richard looked toward Vanessa.
She looked away.
Suddenly, the person who had controlled every room she entered looked powerless.
I turned toward Vanessa.
"How long?""
She looked at me.
"What?""
"How long did you know about Richard?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I didn't know everything.""
"How much did you know?""
She stayed silent.
"Vanessa.""
Finally, she whispered.
"Enough.""
The word crushed whatever hope remained.
"Enough to marry me?""
She shook her head.
"I thought I could change things.""
I stared.
"You thought you could fix a plan that started with hurting my daughter?""
"I thought after we were married, I could convince him.""
I looked at Richard.
"Convince him to do what?""
Nobody answered.
Then Robert spoke.
"To stop the legal process.""
I turned.
"What legal process?""
Robert looked at Richard.
"Tell him.""
Richard remained silent.
Robert opened the folder.
"Richard was preparing a petition.""
My face changed.
"A petition for what?""
Robert looked at Lily.
"For guardianship review.""
The room exploded with whispers.
I felt numb.
"He wanted to challenge me?""
Richard finally spoke.
"Only because you refuse to accept reality.""
I stepped forward.
"You don't get to decide my reality.""
He looked at me.
"You are blinded by love.""
I looked at Lily.
Then back at him.
"No.""
I smiled sadly.
"I am guided by it.""
Richard stared at me.
And for the first time...
He looked unsure.
Then the police sirens sounded outside.
Everyone turned.
Richard's expression changed completely.

Because he knew.
Someone had already called.
