Chapter 8: The Woman From Vanessa’s Past

The words didn't make sense at first.

I heard them.

But my brain refused to accept them.

"Say that again.""

The woman on the phone took a breath.

"Vanessa wanted legal control over your household.""

I looked at my daughter.

She was sitting beside my mother, coloring quietly with a borrowed pencil.

She had no idea her entire world had almost been changed without her knowing.

"Who are you?""

"My name is Claire.""

"How do you know Vanessa?""

"I used to work for her.""

I stepped away from the crowd.

"Work for her doing what?""

There was a long pause.

Then Claire said,

"Planning.""

That word made my stomach tighten.

"Planning what?""

"Her future.""

I closed my eyes.

"You're going to have to be more specific.""

Claire lowered her voice.

"Vanessa contacted me because she wanted to understand how blended families handle custody and financial decisions.""

"That doesn't explain anything.""

"No.""

Her voice became heavier.

"It doesn't.""

I waited.

Then she continued.

"Because what she asked me wasn't normal.""

I looked at Robert.

He was watching me carefully.

"What did she ask?""

Claire answered.

"She wanted to know how much influence a spouse could gain over a child's life after marriage.""

My hand tightened around my phone.

"Why?""

"Because she believed you would eventually choose your marriage over your daughter.""

The silence around me felt unbearable.

I looked at Vanessa.

She was watching me.

She knew.

She knew this conversation was about her.

"Did she say that?""

Claire hesitated.

"Yes.""

My chest tightened.

"What exactly did she say?""

"I wrote it down.""

The words made me freeze.

"You wrote it down?""

"Because I realized something was wrong.""

I looked toward Emily.

Then toward Robert.

Everyone who had trusted Vanessa had eventually discovered something they weren't supposed to see.

Claire continued.

"She told me Lily was the biggest obstacle.""

My eyes closed.

Not because I was surprised.

Because I was hurt.

After everything.

After all the moments where Lily tried to love Vanessa.

After every drawing.

Every small gift.

Every time she called her "almost mom.""

Vanessa saw her as an obstacle.

I walked back toward the ballroom.

"Put her on speaker.""

Everyone looked at me.

Vanessa shook her head.

"Daniel, don't.""

I pressed the button.

Claire's voice filled the room.

"Hello?""

I looked at Vanessa.

"Tell everyone what you told me.""

Silence.

Then Claire said,

"Vanessa told me she believed Daniel was too attached to Lily.""

Vanessa's face became pale.

"Stop.""

Claire continued.

"She said the child controlled his choices.""

My mother covered her mouth.

Marcus looked furious.

I stared at Vanessa.

"Did you say that?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

Claire spoke again.

"She also asked me if there was a way to prove Daniel was emotionally unstable because of his responsibilities.""

The room exploded with whispers.

I felt like the ground moved beneath me.

"You tried to make me look unstable?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"No.""

"Then explain.""

"I was scared.""

"Of what?""

She looked at Lily.

"That I would never have you.""

I stared at her.

"You thought hurting my daughter would make me love you more?""

She started crying.

"I didn't think it through.""

That sentence was the most honest thing she had said all day.

She didn't think it through.

She didn't think about Lily.

She didn't think about me.

She thought about herself.

Claire's voice interrupted.

"Daniel.""

I picked up the phone.

"Yes?""

"There is one more thing.""

"What?""

"Vanessa wasn't working alone.""

The room went silent.

I looked at Robert.

Then Emily.

Then Vanessa.

"What do you mean?""

Claire answered:

"The documents weren't only changed by Vanessa.""

My heart started pounding.

"Who else?""

Another pause.

May you like

Then she said:

"Someone in your own family helped her.""
