Chapter 9: The Man Who Sold My Father
Ethan signaled Marcus to remain behind the office door.
Rachel moved her wheelchair closer to the desk.
Helen quickly gathered the documents and pushed them into a locked cabinet.
The footsteps stopped outside.
"Come out, Helen," the man called again.
"I only want to talk.""
Helen looked at me.
"Whatever happens, don't give him that key.""
I closed my fist around the silver key.
The office door opened.
A tall man in his sixties entered.
He wore a gray jacket and carried a black leather briefcase.
His hair was almost completely white, but his eyes were sharp.
He looked at Ethan first.
"Mr. Harrison.""
Ethan stepped forward.
"Daniel.""
The man nodded politely.
Then his gaze settled on me.
"Isabella Brooks.""
I didn't respond.
Daniel smiled faintly.
"You have your father's eyes.""
I felt my stomach twist.
"You knew my father?""
"I drove him for years.""
"Then tell me what happened to him.""
Daniel placed his briefcase on the desk.
"Michael was a good man. Too trusting, unfortunately.""
Ethan folded his arms.
"Why are you here?""
Daniel opened the briefcase.
"Because I believe everyone deserves to know the truth.""
Helen laughed bitterly.
"You've had years to tell it.""
Daniel ignored her.
He removed a photograph and placed it on the desk.
It showed Michael standing beside a black car.
The date was written in the corner.
Three days before his disappearance.
"Your father was planning to leave the country with Margaret," Daniel said.
"He had discovered that Charles Caldwell was involved in the foundation's missing funds.""
I stared at him.
"Did Charles kill him?""
Daniel hesitated.
"No.""
"Then where is he?""
Daniel looked at Ethan.
"That's complicated.""
Ethan stepped closer.
"Stop speaking in riddles.""
Daniel sighed.
"Michael was taken to a private property outside Savannah. Charles wanted him to sign a statement admitting that he had stolen money from the family trust.""
Helen shook her head.
"That's not what happened.""
Daniel turned toward her.
"You weren't there.""
"I saw the documents.""
"Then you saw what Margaret wanted you to see.""
I felt anger rising.
"Where is my father?""
Daniel looked directly at me.
"He died.""
The words landed like a physical blow.
I gripped the desk.
"How?""
"During the escape attempt. There was a struggle. He fell from a second-floor balcony.""
Ethan looked horrified.
"Why wasn't his body recovered?""
Daniel closed the briefcase.
"Because Charles didn't want an investigation.""
Rachel covered her mouth.
I felt tears burning my eyes.
My father had died trying to protect my mother.
And I had spent twenty-eight years believing he simply didn't want me.
"Did my mother see him die?""
Daniel nodded.
"Yes.""
I could barely speak.
"Where is she now?""
"She's safe.""
"Where?""
Daniel glanced toward the window.
"Somewhere Charles cannot reach her.""
I took a step toward him.
"Give me the address.""
Daniel shook his head.
"I can't.""
"Why not?""
"Because Charles is dead, but the people who worked for him aren't. Some of them still believe your mother's evidence could destroy their lives.""
Ethan narrowed his eyes.
"How do we know you're not one of them?""
Daniel looked offended.
"Because I saved Margaret.""
Helen suddenly stood.
"No, you didn't.""
Daniel turned sharply.
Helen pointed at him.
"You delivered her to Charles in the first place.""
The room fell silent.
Daniel's expression hardened.
"That was a long time ago.""
"You told Michael you were taking Margaret somewhere safe. Instead, you gave Charles her location.""
I stared at Daniel.
"Is that true?""
He said nothing.
Helen continued.
"Michael discovered the betrayal. He confronted Daniel the night he disappeared.""
Ethan's face darkened.
"You're the reason my brother vanished?""
Daniel looked toward the door.
Marcus stepped into view.
"Don't move.""
Daniel slowly raised his hands.
"You people have no idea what Charles was capable of.""
I stepped closer.
"My mother spent eleven months being held against her will because of you.""
Daniel looked at me.
"Your mother survived because I eventually helped her escape.""
"After you betrayed her?""
He lowered his eyes.
For the first time, I saw something resembling shame.
Then he reached into his jacket.
Marcus immediately moved forward.
"Hands where I can see them!""
Daniel pulled out a small photograph.
It showed a modest white house surrounded by trees.
On the back was a handwritten address.
"Your mother is there," he said quietly.
I grabbed it.
"Why should I believe you?""
"Because she gave me that photograph herself.""
Rachel leaned forward.
"Why would Margaret trust you?""
Daniel looked at her.
"Because I was the only person who knew where Michael hid the original medical evidence.""
Ethan frowned.
"What evidence?""
Daniel opened his briefcase again and removed a small USB drive.
"Everything Charles tried to destroy. The original hospital records. The financial transfers. And a recording of the night Rachel's medication was changed.""
Rachel's eyes widened.
"You're saying you have proof?""
Daniel nodded.
"Enough to put everyone involved behind bars.""
Ethan reached for the drive.
But Daniel pulled it away.
"Not so fast.""
He looked at me.
"There's one condition.""
I stared at him.
"What?""
"Before you see your mother, you need to understand something about her.""
"What?""
Daniel took a deep breath.
"Margaret didn't just hide because she was afraid of Vanessa Caldwell.""
He paused.
"She hid because she was the one who signed the document that transferred Rachel's medical records to Dr. Whitmore.""
Rachel went completely still.
Ethan stared at him.
"That's impossible.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Your mother knew, Isabella. She knew what happened to Rachel. And she helped cover it up.""
I felt the room spin.
"No.""
Daniel placed the USB drive on the desk.
"There's a recording on here that explains why.""
I looked at the photograph of my mother.
The woman I had spent four years mourning.
The woman I had just discovered was alive.
And suddenly, I was terrified of hearing her voice again.
Because what if the person I had spent my entire life loving had been hiding something unforgivable?
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered with trembling fingers.
A familiar voice whispered.
"Isabella? Sweetheart, it's Mom.""
I couldn't speak.
She began crying.
"Please don't listen to Daniel. He's lying about what I did.""
May you like
Then, after a long silence, she said something that shattered everything I thought I knew.
"I didn't help them hurt Rachel. I helped them hide the fact that Rachel was never supposed to survive that night.""
