Chapter 3: My Mother's Last Warning
I couldn't breathe.
The ballroom disappeared around me.
All I could hear was my mother's voice.
Four years had passed since I last heard it outside my memories.
I remembered her singing while cooking dinner. I remembered her laughing when I burned pancakes. I remembered the way she used to kiss my forehead before leaving for her night shift.
Now her voice was coming from Ethan Harrison's phone.
"If anything happens to me, make sure Isabella never trusts Vanessa Caldwell.""
Rachel began crying.
I turned toward her.
"Where did you get that recording?""
Ethan lowered the phone.
"Rachel received it three weeks ago from an attorney in Savannah. It was part of a collection of documents your mother left behind.""
"Why didn't anyone contact me?""
Rachel looked devastated.
"We tried. Someone had changed the contact information attached to your mother's old records.""
My stomach tightened.
"Who?""
Nobody answered.
I looked at Vanessa.
She was staring at the phone as if it were a loaded weapon.
"Turn that off," she snapped.
Ethan ignored her.
The recording continued.
My mother's voice sounded tired, but determined.
"Rachel, I know you won't believe me at first. But Vanessa has been meeting with Richard Collins. They're trying to take control of the foundation accounts. They believe your accident makes you easy to manipulate.""
There was a pause.
Then my mother continued.
"I saw the documents. I saw what they changed. And I know what happened to you wasn't an accident.""
Rachel began shaking.
I reached for the nearest chair.
My mother had known.
She had known someone was trying to destroy her own sister's life.
And she had never told me.
The recording continued.
"There's another thing. Isabella must never know about the money until the investigation is complete. If Vanessa discovers that Margaret's daughter has access to the original trust records, she'll come after her.""
The recording ended with a click.
I looked at Ethan.
"What money?""
He exchanged a glance with Rachel.
Then he said something that made my head spin.
"Your mother was the original beneficiary of a family trust worth nearly eighteen million dollars.""
I laughed once.
It wasn't because anything was funny.
"My mother worked two jobs. She lived in a rented apartment. She drove a twelve-year-old car. You're telling me she had eighteen million dollars?""
Rachel nodded.
"She never wanted the money. She wanted to keep it away from the people who were trying to steal it.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"This is ridiculous. You're all believing the ramblings of a dead woman.""
Rachel turned toward her.
"My sister wasn't a liar.""
Vanessa's face hardened.
"She was unstable. That's why she disappeared from our lives.""
I felt something cold move through my chest.
"Don't talk about my mother.""
Vanessa looked at me.
For the first time, I saw something besides arrogance in her expression.
I saw calculation.
"Listen, Isabella. You don't understand what's happening. Your mother was involved in some very complicated financial matters.
She made mistakes. Terrible mistakes.""
"What mistakes?""
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she glanced at Richard.
He was still standing near the security guard, his face shining with sweat.
"Your mother stole money," Vanessa said.
"She stole from this family, and she left Rachel to clean up the mess.""
Rachel shook her head.
"That's a lie.""
Vanessa raised her voice.
"Ask her husband! Ask anyone who worked with her!""
Ethan stepped forward.
"Careful, Vanessa.""
But she continued.
"Margaret Brooks wasn't the innocent woman you think she was. She was involved in the foundation's finances long before Rachel's accident.""
I stared at her.
My mother had worked as a bookkeeper for a small accounting firm.
She had never mentioned working for the Harrison Foundation.
Rachel reached for my hand.
"Isabella, your mother was investigating them. She discovered that donations meant for accident victims were being redirected into private accounts.""
Richard suddenly shouted.
"That's enough!""
Every head turned.
He pointed at Ethan.
"You cannot use illegally obtained recordings to destroy people's reputations!""
Ethan remained calm.
"Then you won't mind explaining the transfers.""
Richard's face changed.
"What transfers?""
Ethan took a folded sheet of paper from his jacket.
"Eleven payments made from the foundation's emergency assistance account. Each one was authorized through your office.""
Richard shook his head.
"Those were legitimate expenses.""
"Then why did they go to companies registered under Vanessa Caldwell's business partner?""
Vanessa stepped toward him.
"Richard, don't say another word.""
It was the first time she had spoken to him like an employee rather than a friend.
I noticed.
So did Ethan.
He looked at the security guards.
"Nobody leaves until the police arrive.""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"You think you can have me arrested at my own charity event?""
Ethan's voice remained cold.
"You're not the owner of this hotel, Vanessa.""
She stared at him.
Then her gaze shifted toward me.
"You think this is over, Isabella?""
I didn't answer.
She stepped closer.
"You have no idea what your mother left behind. And if you keep digging, you'll discover why she was so afraid of me.""
I felt my heart pounding.
"Did you hurt my mother?""
For a moment, Vanessa said nothing.
Then she leaned toward me.
"Your mother should have stayed out of things that didn't concern her.""
Rachel gasped.
Ethan moved between us.
"Security. Take her away from Isabella.""
Two guards stepped forward.
But Vanessa suddenly reached into her handbag and pulled out a small envelope.
She threw it onto the table.
"Fine. Since everyone wants the truth, let's discuss the truth.""
The envelope slid across the polished surface and stopped in front of Rachel.
Ethan opened it carefully.
Inside was a medical report, a photograph, and a handwritten statement.
Rachel looked at the photograph.
Her entire body went rigid.
"Where did you get this?""
Vanessa smiled.
"Ask your husband.""
Ethan stared at the paper.
For the first time that evening, he looked genuinely shaken.
Rachel turned toward him.
"Ethan?""
He didn't respond.
She looked down at the medical report.
Then she read one line aloud.
"Patient's neurological deterioration occurred following an unauthorized medication change.""
Her eyes moved to the signature at the bottom.
It belonged to a doctor.
A doctor who had officially declared her paralysis permanent.
Rachel began to cry.
"That medication was changed the night I lost the ability to move my legs.""
Ethan slowly folded the report.
"Rachel, I need you to listen to me.""
She grabbed his sleeve.
"Did you know?""
He looked into her eyes.
"No. I swear I didn't.""
Vanessa took advantage of the silence.
"Maybe he didn't know. But someone in his family certainly did.""
Ethan's face hardened.
"Who?""
Vanessa glanced toward the entrance.
Then she smiled.
"Your father.""
At that exact moment, the ballroom doors opened.
An elderly man in a dark suit walked inside, leaning heavily on a polished wooden cane.
Ethan went pale.
"Dad?""
The old man looked directly at Rachel.
Then he spoke five words that made her drop the medical report.
"Margaret was supposed to be dead.""
And suddenly, I understood.
May you like
My mother's warning hadn't been about protecting me from a stolen fortune.
It had been about protecting me from the people who knew what really happened to her.
