Chapter 11: The Father Who Sold His Own Son
My mother grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the kitchen.
"Don't open that door.""
I looked through the narrow window.
Arthur stood on the porch.
He wasn't alone.
A younger man in a dark jacket waited beside the driveway.
My mother whispered, "He found us.""
I called Ethan.
"Your father is here.""
"What?""
"He's outside the house.""
Ethan's voice immediately changed.
"Don't let him inside. I'm coming.""
My mother shook her head.
"Tell him not to approach Arthur.""
I covered the phone.
"Why?""
"Because Arthur isn't here to help us.""
Before I could ask anything else, the front door opened.
Arthur walked inside.
He looked directly at my mother.
"Margaret.""
She stepped in front of me.
"Get out.""
Arthur closed the door behind him.
"Please. I didn't come here to hurt you.""
"You've said that before.""
He removed his gloves.
"I came for the original trust agreement.""
My mother laughed bitterly.
"After everything you've done, you still care about the money?""
Arthur looked exhausted.
"I care about what happens to Ethan.""
"Then you should have thought about that before you betrayed Michael.""
Arthur's face tightened.
"Michael was going to destroy the entire family.""
"He was trying to expose a criminal operation.""
"He was going to take the evidence to the press. He didn't understand how many people would be ruined.""
My mother stepped closer.
"Your son was murdered because he refused to become like you.""
Arthur looked away.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then he said something I never expected.
"I didn't order Michael's death.""
My mother shook her head.
"But you arranged the meeting.""
Arthur's silence confirmed it.
I stepped forward.
"Explain.""
He looked at me.
"Michael discovered that Charles Caldwell had been using the Harrison Foundation to move money. He came to me for help. I agreed to arrange a meeting with someone who could investigate the transactions.""
"But you sent him to Charles.""
Arthur nodded slowly.
"I believed Charles would negotiate.""
My mother let out a bitter laugh.
"Instead, Charles had men waiting.""
Arthur lowered his eyes.
"I didn't know they intended to kill him.""
I felt sick.
"You knew he was in danger?""
Arthur didn't answer.
My voice rose.
"YOU KNEW?""
He flinched.
"I thought they would frighten him into surrendering the documents.""
My mother stepped forward.
"You handed him to the people who wanted him dead. And when I begged you to help me find Michael, you told me to accept that he had abandoned me.""
Arthur's face crumpled.
"I was trying to protect the family.""
I stared at him.
"What about my family?""
He looked at me.
"I know I don't deserve forgiveness.""
"No, you don't.""
Suddenly, the front door opened again.
Ethan rushed inside.
"Dad!""
Arthur turned.
"Ethan, listen.""
"No. You listen.""
Ethan's voice shook.
"I spent my entire life believing Michael abandoned us. You told me he was irresponsible. You told me he didn't care about the family.""
Arthur tried to approach him.
"I was protecting you.""
"From what? The truth?""
Rachel entered behind Ethan, followed by Olivia.
She looked at Arthur with tears in her eyes.
"Did you know what happened to me?""
Arthur nodded.
"I knew about the altered medication records.""
Rachel's lips trembled.
"Did you know I could have died?""
"Yes.""
She stared at him.
"And you let me believe my condition was permanent?""
Arthur looked devastated.
"I was afraid.""
Rachel shook her head.
"Your fear cost me three years of my life.""
Ethan stepped away from his father.
"You're finished, Dad.""
Arthur reached for his arm.
"Ethan, please.""
Ethan pulled away.
"Don't touch me.""
Then my mother opened the envelope she had retrieved earlier.
She removed a small memory card.
"This contains the original recording of the meeting between Charles, Arthur, and Dr. Whitmore.""
Arthur's expression changed instantly.
"Margaret, don't.""
My mother held the card tightly.
"You remember what you said that night, Arthur?""
He said nothing.
She continued.
"You told Charles that Michael would never become a problem again.""
Ethan stared at his father.
Arthur's shoulders dropped.
Then my mother pressed a button on a small recorder.
A man's voice filled the room.
Arthur's voice.
"If Michael refuses to sign, make sure he never gets the chance to talk.""
Ethan staggered backward.
The recording continued.
Charles Caldwell laughed.
"Don't worry. I know exactly how to handle my daughter's little problem.""
Then Arthur spoke again.
"And what about Margaret?""
Charles answered.
"She's already taken care of.""
The recording stopped.
Ethan looked at his father as though he were seeing a stranger.
"Did you know they were going to kill him?""
Arthur's eyes filled with tears.
"I didn't know they would go that far.""
Ethan turned away.
"Get out.""
Arthur remained still.
"Son...""
"GET OUT!""
Olivia called the police.
Arthur didn't resist when the officers arrived.
But before they led him away, he turned toward me.
"Isabella, there's something else. Michael left another recording. It was addressed to you.""
My heart stopped.
"Where?""
Arthur looked at my mother.
"She knows.""
My mother slowly shook her head.
"No. I destroyed it.""
Arthur gave a sad smile.
"You destroyed a copy.""
He looked at me.
"The original is hidden inside the Harrison Foundation's old archive room.""
Then he was escorted outside.
Ethan stood motionless.
Rachel gently reached for his hand.
I looked at my mother.
"Is it true? Is there another recording?""
She nodded.
"Yes.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
She took my hand.
"Because it contains something I was afraid you'd never forgive me for.""
"What?""
She looked directly into my eyes.
"Your father knew he was going to die. And before he disappeared, he made me promise something.""
I swallowed.
"What promise?""
My mother began crying.
"He asked me to keep you away from the Harrison family.""
She paused.
"Because he believed Ethan's brother was involved in the plot.""
Everyone turned toward Ethan.
His face went white.
"Michael?""
My mother nodded.
"No, sweetheart. Not Michael.""
She looked at Ethan.
"Your younger brother.""
Ethan stared at her.
"I don't have a younger brother.""
My mother reached into her handbag.
She removed a photograph of a baby.
On the back was a hospital bracelet.
*Ethan Harrison — Twin A.*
May you like
Then she whispered:
"Michael wasn't your father's only son. You had a twin brother. And he was the one who helped Charles Caldwell destroy your family.""
