Chapter 2: The Secret Behind Twelve Million Dollars

Nobody spoke.

The recording had been short, but its consequences were enormous.

Three hundred wealthy guests stood beneath the chandeliers, staring at the woman who had spent years presenting herself as Atlanta's most generous philanthropist.

Vanessa recovered first.

She let out a nervous laugh.

"Oh, Ethan. You cannot possibly be serious.""

Ethan held up the phone.

"Which part isn't serious? The money? The forged documents? Or your plan to have my wife declared mentally incompetent?""

"That's completely out of context!""

Richard Collins appeared from behind a group of guests.

He was a narrow-faced man in his early fifties, wearing a navy tuxedo and an expensive gold watch.

"Let's calm down," Richard said.

"This is a private financial discussion being misrepresented.""

Ethan turned toward him.

"Then explain why you're discussing my wife's mental capacity with a woman who has no authority over her medical decisions.""

Richard adjusted his cufflinks.

"Rachel has been under considerable stress. We were discussing contingency arrangements.""

Rachel suddenly spoke.

"Don't lie, Richard.""

Her voice was quiet, but everyone heard it.

Richard looked irritated.

"Rachel, perhaps you should let Ethan handle this.""

"No.""

She tightened her fingers around her husband's hand.

"You've been telling people I'm confused for months. Every time I ask about the foundation's money, you say I'm imagining things.""

Vanessa folded her arms.

"You're making a scene, Rachel. Nobody wants to embarrass you.""

Rachel looked up at her.

"Then why did you come to my hospital room?""

Vanessa went completely still.

Ethan's expression hardened.

"That's exactly what we're discussing.""

He opened another recording.

This one showed Richard sitting inside a private office, holding a thick folder.

Vanessa stood beside him.

The timestamp was from six days earlier.

Richard's voice came through.

"Her medical records are sealed. If someone checks the original report, we're finished.""

Vanessa answered.

"Nobody is going to check anything.""

Richard lowered his voice.

"What about the night of the accident?""

Vanessa leaned toward him.

"Nobody can find out what we did the night Rachel lost the use of her legs.""

The recording ended.

A woman near the front table gasped.

Rachel's face had turned pale.

She reached for Ethan's arm.

"That's the voice.""

Ethan bent toward her.

"Which voice, sweetheart?""

"Vanessa's. I heard her at the hospital.""

Vanessa shook her head violently.

"She's confused! Ethan, you know how traumatic that accident was.""

Rachel looked directly at her.

"I remember your perfume.""

The words seemed to cut through the room.

Rachel continued.

"Orange blossom. You were standing near my bed. I couldn't move my legs, and I heard you telling someone that the problem had been taken care of.""

Vanessa's lips parted.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she turned toward Ethan.

"Your wife has been suffering. You should be protecting her instead of letting a waitress and a group of strangers turn this into a spectacle.""

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

"Don't use her condition as a weapon.""

Thomas Reed suddenly stepped forward.

"Mr. Harrison, perhaps we should move this conversation somewhere private.""

Ethan looked at him.

"Why?""

Thomas swallowed.

"This is a charity event. We have donors, sponsors, and important guests.""

"Exactly," Ethan replied.

"People donated money because they believed this foundation helped vulnerable families. They deserve to know what happened.""

Vanessa pointed at me.

"That girl is the problem. She assaulted me in front of everyone. Have security remove her.""

I stared at her.

"I grabbed your wrist because you were trying to hit someone.""

"You're a waitress!""

"And you're a woman who thinks money gives her permission to hurt people.""

A murmur traveled through the crowd.

Vanessa's cheeks turned red.

"Thomas, fire her immediately!""

Thomas looked at Ethan.

Then at Vanessa.

His voice became almost apologetic.

"Miss Brooks, please step aside.""

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

Even after everything, my manager was still trying to protect the millionaire.

Ethan intervened.

"Mr. Reed, Isabella is under my protection.""

Thomas froze.

Ethan continued.

"She did what every person in this room should have done.""

For the first time that evening, I felt my knees weaken with relief.

But Rachel was staring at me.

Not with gratitude.

With recognition.

"Isabella," she said slowly.

I turned toward her.

"Yes?""

"How old are you?""

The question caught me off guard.

"Twenty-eight.""

Rachel's eyes filled with tears.

"What's your mother's name?""

"Margaret Brooks.""

Rachel's hand flew to her mouth.

Ethan looked between us.

"Rachel? What is it?""

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she reached into the small handbag resting beside her wheelchair and removed a folded photograph.

Her fingers shook as she opened it.

It showed two young women standing outside a brick house.

One was Rachel.

The other was a woman I recognized instantly.

My mother.

I stepped closer.

"Where did you get that?""

Rachel looked at me through tear-filled eyes.

"Your mother saved my life once.""

I stared at the photograph.

My mother had died four years earlier.

She had never mentioned knowing Rachel Harrison.

"That's impossible," I whispered.

Rachel shook her head.

"No, sweetheart. It's not.""

She turned the photograph around.

There was handwriting on the back.

To Margaret, the sister who gave me a second chance. I will never forget what you sacrificed.

My throat tightened.

"My mother had a sister?""

Rachel nodded.

"She was my half-sister. We shared the same father.""

I felt as if the floor had shifted beneath me.

My mother had grown up believing she was an only child. At least, that was what she had always told me.

Rachel reached for my hand.

"I've been trying to find you for months.""

Ethan looked startled.

"Rachel, you told me you couldn't locate Margaret's family.""

"I couldn't. Until recently.""

She turned toward Vanessa.

"And now I understand why someone made sure I couldn't.""

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

It wasn't a natural laugh.

It was sharp and desperate.

"Are you seriously suggesting I had something to do with your family history?""

Rachel didn't look away.

"You knew Margaret, didn't you?""

Vanessa's smile vanished.

Richard moved toward the ballroom doors.

Ethan noticed.

"Richard, stop.""

But the financial director kept walking.

A security guard blocked his path.

Richard turned around, visibly sweating.

Ethan took another phone from his pocket.

"Before anyone leaves, there's something else you should hear.""

He pressed a button.

A recording began.

This time, it wasn't Vanessa's voice.

It was my mother's.

May you like

And the first words made my heart stop.

"If anything happens to me, make sure Isabella never trusts Vanessa Caldwell.""
