Chapter 8: The Woman Who Knew My Father's Secret

We left Atlanta before sunrise.

Ethan arranged two security vehicles, one driven by a former police officer named Marcus, the other by a woman named Olivia.

Rachel insisted on coming.

"I've spent three years being told to stay home," she told Ethan as we prepared to leave.

"I'm done being protected from the truth.""

Ethan didn't argue.

Arthur remained in Atlanta to cooperate with the police and preserve the foundation's financial records.

Before we left, he pulled me aside.

"Isabella, there's something I should have told you years ago.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

"Michael knew about you.""

My throat tightened.

"How?""

"Margaret sent him photographs. He wanted to meet you, but he believed it was too dangerous.""

I swallowed.

"Did he love my mother?""

Arthur's expression softened.

"More than anything.""

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

I had grown up believing I was unwanted by a man who didn't even know my name.

Now I was discovering that he might have spent years trying to protect me.

The drive to Savannah took several hours.

The sky was gray, and rain tapped against the windshield.

Rachel sat beside Ethan in the back seat. I watched the passing trees and repeatedly checked my phone.

No new messages.

No calls.

Nothing.

At eleven thirty, we arrived at Helen Porter's bookstore.

It was tucked between an antique shop and a small coffeehouse on a quiet street.

The sign above the door read:

*PORTER'S BOOKS & RARE DOCUMENTS.*

A bell rang when we entered.

The store smelled of old paper, cedarwood, and coffee.

An elderly woman emerged from behind a shelf.

"Can I help you?""

I stepped forward.

"I'm looking for Helen Porter.""

She studied my face.

"Who's asking?""

"My name is Isabella Brooks.""

Her expression changed immediately.

She dropped the book in her hand.

"Oh, Margaret's daughter.""

I nodded.

Helen looked toward the windows.

Then she locked the front door.

"Come with me.""

She led us into a narrow office behind the shelves.

On the desk sat an old photograph of my mother.

Helen picked it up.

"Your mother was one of the bravest women I've ever known.""

I looked at her.

"Is she alive?""

Helen took a deep breath.

"Yes.""

My eyes filled instantly.

"Where is she?""

"I don't know exactly where she is now. But I spoke to her six days ago.""

I grabbed the edge of the desk.

"Did she say anything about me?""

Helen nodded.

"She asked whether you were safe.""

I began crying.

"Why hasn't she called me?""

Helen looked uncomfortable.

"Because the people who wanted her dead never stopped looking.""

Ethan stepped forward.

"Who are these people?""

Helen opened a drawer and removed a thick envelope.

"Vanessa Caldwell's father, Charles Caldwell, controlled the network that moved money through the foundation. When Michael discovered it, he collected evidence. Margaret helped him.""

Rachel stared at her.

"And my accident?""

Helen nodded.

"Michael believed someone had deliberately altered your treatment plan. He was preparing to expose the doctor involved.""

Rachel covered her mouth.

"Who was the doctor?""

Helen removed a document.

Dr. Samuel Whitmore.

The same name printed on the medication bottle found in Vanessa's handbag.

Ethan examined the paper.

"He's still practicing?""

"Not anymore," Helen replied.

"He left the country shortly after Margaret disappeared.""

Rachel's face crumpled.

"I trusted him.""

Helen gently touched her shoulder.

"I'm sorry.""

I opened the envelope.

Inside were bank statements, photographs, medical records, and copies of handwritten notes.

One document caught my attention.

It was a trust agreement.

The beneficiary's name was Michael Harrison.

But underneath his name was another beneficiary.

Isabella Margaret Brooks.

I stared at the paper.

My name.

My full name.

I looked at Helen.

"What does this mean?""

"Michael established a trust for you before he disappeared. Your mother was its temporary guardian.""

Ethan read the document.

"How much?""

Helen pointed to the final page.

"Approximately eighteen million dollars, including accumulated interest.""

I sat down.

Eighteen million dollars.

My mother had worked double shifts to pay our bills while an inheritance sat somewhere waiting for me.

But Helen wasn't finished.

She opened a second folder.

"There's a reason I asked you to come here.""

Inside was a photograph of three men standing outside a hospital.

One was Dr. Whitmore.

Another was Richard Collins.

The third man wore a Harrison family security uniform.

Ethan leaned closer.

"That's Daniel.""

Rachel looked confused.

"Who?""

"My father's former driver. He worked for the family for twenty years.""

Helen nodded.

"Daniel was the last person seen with Michael before he disappeared.""

I examined the photograph.

There was something written on the back.

A date.

And an address.

I read it aloud.

"17 Riverbend Road.""

Helen immediately went pale.

"That's where Margaret was taken.""

My heart stopped.

"Taken?""

Helen nodded.

"She wasn't hiding when she disappeared. Someone held her there for eleven months.""

Rachel began crying.

Ethan clenched his jaw.

"Who held her?""

Helen looked toward the locked office door.

Then she whispered.

"Charles Caldwell.""

A sudden noise came from the bookstore entrance.

The front doorbell rang.

Helen froze.

We heard footsteps.

Someone was walking slowly between the shelves.

Then a man's voice called out.

"Helen? I know you're in there.""

Ethan motioned for Marcus to move toward the office door.

Helen grabbed my arm.

"Don't let him see those documents.""

"Who is it?""

May you like

Her answer came in a whisper.

"Daniel. The man who helped make your father disappear.""
