Chapter 10: The Truth My Mother Buried
"Mom?""
My voice barely came out.
I pressed the phone harder against my ear.
"Mom, where are you? Are you safe?""
A shaky breath came through the speaker.
"Isabella, listen carefully. You must leave that bookstore immediately.""
I looked at Daniel.
He was watching me with an expression I couldn't read.
"Why? What happened?""
"Because Daniel isn't the only person who knows where you are.""
My stomach tightened.
"Mom, he says you signed Rachel's medical documents. He says you helped them.""
There was a long silence.
Then my mother whispered, "I signed one document. But I signed it because they threatened to kill you.""
I closed my eyes.
"Tell me everything.""
"Not over the phone. Come to the address Daniel gave you. But don't bring Ethan.""
I looked at Ethan.
He had heard enough to understand.
"Why not?"" I asked.
My mother's voice became urgent.
"Because Arthur Harrison knows more about Michael's death than he's telling you.""
The call disconnected.
Nobody spoke.
Ethan looked at me.
"Isabella, what did she say?""
I slowly lowered the phone.
"She said we shouldn't bring you.""
His expression hardened.
"Why?""
"She believes your father knows more about my father's death.""
Ethan looked toward Daniel.
"Is that true?""
Daniel shook his head.
"Arthur didn't arrange Michael's disappearance.""
"But he concealed what happened.""
Daniel didn't answer.
Rachel moved closer.
"Isabella, I think you should hear your mother out. But nobody should go anywhere without protection.""
I nodded.
Marcus contacted Detective Miller and explained the new development. Olivia remained outside the bookstore while Ethan arranged a secure meeting point.
Daniel was taken into custody for questioning.
Before the officers led him away, he looked at me.
"Your mother will tell you things that sound impossible. Don't assume everything she says is true.""
I stared at him.
"Why should I believe anything you say?""
He lowered his head.
"You shouldn't.""
Three hours later, we arrived at the address.
It was a small white house surrounded by oak trees, about twenty minutes outside Savannah.
A narrow gravel driveway led to the front porch.
The curtains were closed.
My hands were shaking.
I stepped out of the car.
Ethan followed.
"She specifically asked you not to bring me," he said.
"Then stay here.""
He hesitated.
"Isabella, I don't like this.""
"Neither do I.""
Rachel reached for my hand from the passenger seat.
"Go. We'll be right here.""
I walked toward the front door.
Before I could knock, it opened.
A woman stood in the doorway.
Her hair was shorter. Her face was thinner. There were silver strands near her temples.
But her eyes were the same.
My mother's eyes.
"Isabella?""
I dropped my handbag.
"Mom?""
She covered her mouth.
For one second, neither of us moved.
Then I ran into her arms.
She held me so tightly that I could barely breathe.
I buried my face against her shoulder.
She smelled exactly the same.
Lavender soap and the faint scent of cinnamon.
I began sobbing.
"You're alive.""
My mother kissed the top of my head.
"I'm so sorry, sweetheart.""
"You let me bury you.""
Her arms tightened.
"I know.""
"You let me believe I had nobody.""
"I know.""
"Why?""
She pulled away and cupped my face.
"Because they threatened to kill you if I came back.""
I wiped my cheeks.
"Who?""
"Charles Caldwell. Vanessa's father. And the people working with him.""
She led me inside.
The living room was modest. A small television sat beside a bookshelf, and family photographs covered one wall.
I noticed something immediately.
There were no photographs of me.
Only one old picture of Michael.
My father.
I sat down.
"Mom, I need the truth.""
She nodded.
"Ask me anything.""
"Did you know my father?""
She looked at Michael's photograph.
"I loved him.""
"Then why did you tell me he abandoned us?""
Her eyes filled.
"Because Michael disappeared before you were born. I received a message saying he had died. Later, I discovered that the message had been fabricated.""
I leaned forward.
"So he might have survived?""
My mother shook her head.
"No. I eventually found the truth. He died trying to protect me.""
I swallowed.
"And Rachel?""
My mother covered her face.
"Rachel was supposed to die that night.""
The words made my blood run cold.
She explained that Dr. Whitmore had been paid to alter Rachel's medication. The plan was to cause a medical crisis severe enough to make her dependent on the people controlling her trust.
But the dosage was changed too aggressively.
Rachel's condition deteriorated.
And the doctor realized he had nearly killed her.
"Vanessa was there," my mother continued.
"She wanted Rachel's signature on the inheritance documents. When Rachel became critically ill, Vanessa panicked.""
"Then why did you sign the medical document?""
"Because they threatened you. They told me they would frame you for the theft of foundation money if I refused to cooperate.""
I stared at her.
"You could have told the police.""
"I tried.""
She stood and walked toward a locked cabinet.
"Someone inside the department was working for Charles. Every time I contacted an investigator, the people we were investigating knew about it within hours.""
She removed a thick envelope.
Inside were photographs, medical records, and copies of bank transfers.
Then she placed a final document in front of me.
It was a signed statement.
My mother's signature appeared at the bottom.
But the statement contained a paragraph that made me stop breathing.
It claimed that Rachel had voluntarily refused further treatment and had requested that her medical decisions be transferred to Vanessa Caldwell.
"Mom, what is this?""
She began crying.
"It's the document they forced me to sign.""
I looked up.
"Did Rachel ever see it?""
"No.""
"Did Ethan?""
"No.""
"Then how did they get it into her medical file?""
My mother lowered her voice.
"Arthur Harrison delivered it to the hospital himself.""
A knock suddenly sounded at the front door.
My mother froze.
Then she looked at me with absolute terror.
"Isabella, you said Ethan wasn't coming?""
I stood.
"He stayed outside.""
She grabbed my wrist.
"Then whoever is at that door isn't Ethan.""
The knock came again.
Three sharp strikes.
Then a man's voice called through the wood.
"Margaret. We need to talk about the original trust agreement.""
My mother went completely pale.
May you like
I recognized the voice.
Arthur Harrison.
