Chapter 14: The Recording That Exposed Everyone
Emergency lights flickered on.
The basement corridor glowed red.
Ethan grabbed Rachel's wheelchair and pushed her toward the stairwell while I held my mother's hand.
Behind us, Andrew shouted.
"Stop them!""
Two men emerged from the archive room.
Marcus appeared from the opposite corridor and tackled one of them.
Olivia rushed toward the second.
I heard a crash, followed by a man's groan.
"Keep moving!"" Marcus shouted.
We reached the stairwell.
Ethan looked back.
"Where's Andrew?""
I turned.
He was standing near the archive room, holding a black folder.
He wasn't running.
He was smiling.
Then he raised his phone.
"Isabella! You want to know what happened to Michael?""
I stopped.
Ethan grabbed my shoulder.
"Don't listen to him.""
Andrew held up the folder.
"The original recording is inside. Come and get it.""
My mother stepped forward.
"Don't believe him!""
Andrew laughed.
"You still haven't told her everything, Margaret.""
He opened the folder and removed a photograph.
It showed Michael sitting in a hospital bed.
He looked exhausted, but alive.
The date was written in the corner.
Three days after the night everyone believed he had died.
I felt my knees weaken.
"That's impossible.""
Andrew nodded.
"He survived the fall.""
My mother covered her mouth.
Ethan stared at him.
"What are you saying?""
Andrew looked directly at me.
"Your father didn't die that night. He was taken to a private hospital under another name. Charles wanted him alive long enough to sign away the trust.""
My mother began crying.
"I didn't know.""
Andrew's smile widened.
"You knew enough.""
He pulled another photograph from the folder.
This one showed a hospital corridor.
A woman stood beside Michael's bed.
Vanessa Caldwell.
Rachel gasped.
"She was there?""
Andrew nodded.
"Vanessa visited him. She wanted to make sure he never recovered.""
I looked at the photograph.
"Did she kill him?""
Andrew lowered his voice.
"Dr. Whitmore gave him an injection. Michael died two hours later.""
My mother covered her face.
I felt something break inside me.
For years, I had imagined my father leaving us.
Now I was learning that he had spent his final hours fighting to protect a daughter he would never meet.
Ethan stepped forward.
"Give me the folder.""
Andrew shook his head.
"Not yet.""
He pointed toward the archive room.
"The trust agreement is inside. Isabella needs to sign the transfer documents before midnight.""
I frowned.
"What transfer documents?""
Andrew removed several sheets of paper.
"Your father established the trust in your name. But you cannot access it without confirming your identity and signing the release.""
My mother shook her head.
"That's not true. The trust is protected by an independent trustee.""
Andrew smiled.
"Was.""
He showed us another document.
It contained the signature of the original trustee.
And beneath it was a recent authorization transferring control to Andrew Harrison.
Rachel leaned forward.
"That's forged.""
Andrew shrugged.
"Prove it.""
Ethan moved toward him.
"You're not getting that money.""
Andrew laughed.
"You still think this is about money?""
He pointed at Ethan.
"Charles told me my entire life that I was unwanted. He said Michael chose you and Isabella over me. I was supposed to be his son, but he made sure I grew up believing I was a mistake.""
Ethan stared at him.
"Then why hurt Rachel? Why destroy Michael's life?""
Andrew's expression darkened.
"Because Michael wanted to bring everyone back together. He wanted to take me away from Charles. He wanted to give Isabella everything.""
He turned toward me.
"And he wanted me to forgive the people who abandoned me.""
I shook my head.
"So you destroyed everyone instead.""
Andrew's jaw tightened.
"I took what belonged to me.""
My mother stepped forward.
"No, Andrew. You took what belonged to your brother.""
For a moment, Andrew looked genuinely wounded.
Then he raised his hand.
One of the men beside him moved toward my mother.
Ethan stepped between them.
"Don't touch her.""
A siren sounded outside.
Andrew looked toward the stairwell.
His smile disappeared.
"Who called the police?""
Marcus raised his phone.
"I did.""
Andrew cursed.
He rushed into the archive room.
Ethan followed.
I ran after him.
Inside, filing cabinets stood open. Papers covered the floor. A large steel cabinet had been forced open.
Andrew was holding a small black recording device.
"Put it down!"" Ethan shouted.
Andrew turned.
"You don't understand what you're destroying.""
He pressed play.
Michael's voice filled the room.
"Andrew, if you're listening to this, I need you to know something.""
Andrew froze.
The recording continued.
"I never abandoned you. I wanted to bring you home. I wanted both my sons to grow up knowing each other.""
Andrew's face twisted.
Michael continued.
"I know Charles has filled your head with lies. But you're my son. Nothing can change that.""
Andrew's hand began shaking.
Then Michael said something that made everyone go silent.
"There's one more thing. Isabella isn't just your sister. She's the reason I created the trust. I wanted her to have a future free from the mistakes we made.""
Andrew suddenly threw the device against the wall.
It shattered.
But the recording didn't stop.
A second speaker activated from the ceiling.
Michael's voice continued.
"To whoever is listening, the original evidence is stored in the archive's lower compartment. The access code is the date of Isabella's birth.""
Ethan immediately looked toward the steel cabinet.
I remembered the silver key.
And the brass token.
I rushed forward, inserted the key into a small lock, and turned it.
The cabinet opened.
Inside was a sealed package.
I pulled it out.
There were original bank records, hospital documents, and a second recording.
But the most important document was a signed confession.
It was from Dr. Samuel Whitmore.
The confession named Vanessa, Richard, Andrew, and Arthur.
It also contained one final detail.
A payment had been made to the doctor from an account belonging to someone outside the Harrison family.
Someone who had never appeared in any of our investigations.
Ethan examined the signature.
"Who is this?""
I looked at the name.
*Margaret Brooks.*
I turned toward my mother.
"Mom?""
She went completely still.
Andrew began laughing.
"Now you understand.""
My mother stepped backward.
"Isabella, please.""
I held up the document.
"Did you pay Dr. Whitmore?""
She began crying.
"Yes.""
Rachel looked horrified.
Ethan stared at her.
"Why?""
My mother wiped her cheeks.
"Because I paid him to save Michael's life.""
I shook my head.
"What?""
"He had been poisoned. Whitmore told me there was a treatment that could save him, but it required money. I paid him everything I had.""
She looked at the confession.
"Then I discovered he had used that payment to make it look as though I had financed Rachel's medical treatment.""
Andrew smiled.
"Exactly. And that's why the original evidence matters.""
Suddenly, police officers rushed into the room.
Andrew raised his hands.
But before they could restrain him, he looked at me.
"Ask your mother what happened to the money after Michael died.""
I turned toward her.
She closed her eyes.
Then she whispered:
"I didn't lose the money, Isabella. I hid it.""
"Where?""
My mother looked at the original trust agreement.
"In an account that only you can access.""
The detective approached.
"Mrs. Brooks, you're going to have to come with us and explain your involvement.""
My mother nodded.
Then she took my hand.
"Before I go, there's something you need to know. The eighteen million dollars isn't the only inheritance your father left you.""
She pulled a final envelope from her handbag.
Inside was a photograph of a small house.
And a letter addressed to me.
At the bottom, Michael had written:
I hope one day I get to meet my daughter.
I pressed the letter against my chest.
May you like
For the first time, I wasn't wondering why my father had abandoned me.
I was grieving the man who had never been given the chance to come home.
