Chapter 9: The Truth in the Basement

The footsteps stopped.

The silence afterward was worse.

Everyone stood frozen.

Nobody even breathed normally.

I held Lily’s hand with one arm and Ava’s with the other.

I refused to let either of them disappear again.

“Who is he?”” I whispered.

My father looked toward the hallway.

“His name is Marcus.””

Claire’s expression changed.

“I thought he was gone.””

Daniel shook his head.

“He never leaves unfinished business.””

I looked at all of them.

“Someone please explain.””

Claire moved closer.

“Marcus was the person who helped your father hide everything.””

My stomach tightened.

“What everything?””

She looked at me.

“The truth about your past.””

A loud crash came from upstairs.

Everyone jumped.

My father immediately moved toward the basement door.

“Ryan.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“If you want answers, they’re downstairs.””

I almost laughed.

“After everything you’ve done, you expect me to follow you?””

He looked at Ava.

“I know you hate me.””

“I do.””

He accepted the words.

“But if you want to keep them safe, you need to see what I was protecting.””

I didn’t trust him.

Not even a little.

But I trusted one thing.

The truth.

I followed.

The basement was colder than I remembered.

I had lived in this house for years.

I had walked past that door hundreds of times.

And I never knew what was underneath.

My father unlocked a hidden cabinet behind old shelves.

Inside were files.

Dozens of them.

Photos.

Documents.

Medical records.

I grabbed the nearest folder.

The name on it made me freeze.

*Ryan Carter.*

My own name.

I opened it.

Inside was information about me.

My childhood.

My health records.

My family history.

But one page caught my attention.

A DNA report.

My hands trembled.

I looked at the date.

Twelve years ago.

I looked at my father.

“What is this?””

He didn’t answer.

I read the result.

Then I looked again.

Because I couldn’t believe it.

The report wasn’t about Ava.

It was about me.

And the person listed as my biological father…

was not the man standing in front of me.

I slowly raised my eyes.

“What did you do?””

My father looked devastated.

“I found out the truth too late.””

Claire stepped closer.

“Ryan…”

I held up the paper.

“No.””

My voice shook.

“No more protecting me.””

Everyone became silent.

The person who had raised me.

The man I called my father.

The man who controlled my entire life.

He wasn’t my biological father.

Then who was?

A sound came from behind us.

A slow clap.

Everyone turned.

A man stood at the basement entrance.

Older.

Cold eyes.

A familiar smile.

Marcus.

He looked directly at me.

“You finally found it.””

My father stepped forward.

“Stay away from him.””

Marcus laughed.

“You still think you’re the one protecting him?””

I looked at Marcus.

“Who are you?””

He smiled.

“Someone who has known the truth about you since before you were born.””

My blood went cold.

He walked down the stairs.

“Ryan, your whole life was built on a lie.””

I tightened my grip on the DNA report.

“What lie?””

Marcus stopped.

Then he said:

“The man you called your father didn’t steal your daughter.””

He looked at Claire.

“He stole you.””

The basement went silent.

And then Marcus placed an old photograph on the table.

A photograph of my mother.

Standing beside a man I had never seen before.

A man who looked exactly like me.

May you like

Marcus whispered:

“Meet your real father.””
