Chapter 4: The Letter She Left Behind

I stared at the six words written at the bottom of the letter until they blurred.

*Ryan, trust nobody in this house.*

My fingers tightened around the paper.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

I had spent years looking at it.

The way the letters leaned slightly to the right. The small curve she made when writing my name. The tiny mark she always added beneath the letter “y.””

It belonged to Claire.

My first wife.

The woman I had buried in my memories because everyone told me she was gone.

Dead.

Lost forever.

But somehow, her words were sitting in my hand.

And they were warning me about my own home.

“Ryan…”

Emily’s voice sounded distant.

I looked up.

“Don’t.””

She stopped.

“Don’t say my name like nothing happened.””

Her face collapsed.

“I know you’re angry.””

“Angry?””

I laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“You hid a child from me.””

She looked at Ava.

“I was trying to protect her.””

“From who?””

Nobody answered.

The silence was worse than any confession.

I looked back at the letter.

“Claire wrote this. She knew something.””

Emily’s expression changed.

A flash of fear crossed her face.

“You can’t read the whole thing.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

She swallowed.

“Because you’ll hate me.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

I unfolded the paper completely.

The letter was longer than I thought.

The first lines were written shakily.

Ryan, if you are reading this, then something happened that I prayed would never happen.

My breathing slowed.

You need to know the truth about Ava. She is our daughter. She was born after the night everything changed.

I looked toward the little girl.

Ava was sitting beside Lily, holding her hand.

My daughter.

A child I never knew existed.

The letter continued.

The people who told you I abandoned you were lying. The people who told you I was gone were lying. I tried to come back. I tried to find you.

My vision became blurry.

I remembered the last night I saw Claire.

A storm.

A phone call.

Her crying.

And then nothing.

The police told me she disappeared.

They told me there was no evidence of what happened.

They told me to move on.

But someone made sure you forgot.

I stopped reading.

“Someone made me forget?””

The man from the wall stepped closer.

“I told you.””

I looked at him.

“Who are you?””

His expression softened.

“My name is Daniel.””

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

Daniel looked at the photograph still lying on the floor.

“I was Claire’s brother.””

The room went silent.

“You’re her brother?””

He nodded.

“I spent twelve years trying to find Ava.””

I looked at Emily.

“And you knew?””

Emily closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The answer came quietly.

But it destroyed me.

“You knew Daniel was looking for her?””

“Yes.””

“You knew Claire might still be alive?””

Emily’s tears fell.

“Yes.””

I stepped back.

The woman standing in front of me suddenly felt like a stranger.

“Why?””

She covered her mouth.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

Before she could answer, Ava spoke.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

The little girl looked terrified.

“I’m sorry.””

My anger disappeared for a moment.

Not because I forgave anyone.

Because she looked like a child who had been carrying a secret too heavy for her small shoulders.

I walked toward her slowly.

“It’s okay.””

She shook her head.

“No. Mommy said I wasn’t supposed to let you see me.””

I froze.

“Your mommy?””

Ava nodded.

“She said if you found me, it meant she failed.””

The room went cold.

“Where is your mother, Ava?””

The girl looked down.

“She told me she had to leave.””

“When?””

“Before I came here.””

I knelt in front of her.

“Why did she send you here?””

Ava’s eyes filled with tears.

“She said the only person who could keep me safe was my daddy.””

A loud crash suddenly came from inside the wall.

Everyone turned.

Daniel’s face changed.

Not fear.

Panic.

“No.””

I stood up.

“What?””

He stared into the hidden passage.

“We need to leave.””

“Why?””

His voice dropped.

“Because whoever built this room wasn’t hiding Ava from you.””

He looked at Emily.

“They were hiding Ava from him.””

Ava grabbed my hand.

“Daddy…”

I looked into the darkness behind the wall.

Something moved.

Slowly.

Coming closer.

Then a phone began ringing from inside the hidden passage.

May you like

Daniel looked at me.

“That phone hasn’t rung in twelve years.””
