Chapter 11: The People Who Owned the Secret

The footsteps grew louder.

Slow.

Confident.

Whoever was coming didn’t fear being discovered.

They wanted us to know they were there.

I closed the letter and shoved it into my pocket.

“Everyone stay behind me.””

My father looked at me.

“You don’t know what you’re dealing with.””

I turned.

“Neither did you.””

He accepted that.

For once, he didn’t argue.

The basement door opened.

A woman stepped inside.

She was dressed perfectly.

Not a single hair out of place.

Behind her were two men.

Security.

Not police.

Something else.

She looked around the room.

Then her eyes landed on Ava.

“There she is.””

I immediately moved in front of my daughter.

The woman smiled.

“You have no idea how much trouble that child has caused.””

My hands tightened.

“Who are you?””

“My name is Victoria Hale.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But everyone else reacted.

Claire went pale.

Daniel whispered:

“No.””

Victoria looked at him.

“You remember me.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“You ruined everything.””

Victoria smiled.

“No. I corrected a mistake.””

I stared at her.

“What mistake?””

She looked at me.

“Your existence.””

The words made my stomach drop.

Victoria stepped closer.

“Ryan, you have spent years believing your life was ordinary.””

She glanced around the basement.

“But your family has been hiding from people like me for a very long time.””

“Why?””

She looked at Ava.

“Because children like her are valuable.””

My anger exploded.

“She is not an object.””

Victoria tilted her head.

“That’s exactly what makes you dangerous.””

I didn’t understand.

“You’re afraid of a little girl?””

“No.””

She smiled.

“I’m afraid of what she represents.””

Ava grabbed my hand.

“Daddy…”

I looked down.

She was shaking.

I squeezed her fingers.

“I’m here.””

Victoria watched us.

Then she said something that made the room silent.

“That’s why Claire chose you.””

I looked at Claire.

“What does that mean?””

Claire looked away.

Victoria continued.

“She knew you would protect her.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Protect her from what?””

Victoria didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked at my father.

“You failed.””

My father stepped forward.

“I kept him alive.””

“You kept him ignorant.””

The words hit hard.

Because they were true.

I looked at my father.

“Did you know about her?””

He didn’t answer.

Victoria smiled.

“He knew enough.””

My father’s expression changed.

“Don’t.””

Victoria ignored him.

“He knew your real father left behind information.””

She looked at me.

“He knew your bloodline mattered.””

I shook my head.

“This is crazy.””

Victoria stepped closer.

“Then explain why your daughter has the same rare marker your father had.””

Silence.

I looked at Ava.

“What marker?””

Nobody spoke.

Victoria answered.

“A genetic trait passed through your family.””

My father whispered:

“Enough.””

Victoria laughed.

“After all these years, you still think you can control the truth.””

She turned back to me.

“Your real father wasn’t killed because of money.””

“Then why?””

“Because he discovered something.””

“What?””

She smiled.

“He discovered that certain families have been controlling information for generations.””

I stared.

“Information about what?””

Victoria looked at the letter in my pocket.

“Read it.””

I froze.

“How do you know about that?””

She smiled.

“Because I helped write it.””

The room went silent.

Marcus suddenly moved.

Too fast.

He grabbed Victoria’s arm.

“Don’t.””

The security men immediately stepped forward.

Chaos exploded.

Daniel pulled Emily back.

My father grabbed Lily.

I grabbed Ava.

Then the basement lights flickered.

Darkness filled the room.

In the confusion, I heard Victoria whisper beside me.

“Ryan.””

I turned.

She was gone.

But something had been placed in my hand.

A small key.

And a note.

May you like

Only four words were written on it.

*The truth is upstairs.*
