Chapter 5: The Secret Under the Floor

Nobody moved.

The ringing continued.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Each sound echoed through the hidden space behind the wall.

I looked at Daniel.

“What is that?””

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

His face was pale.

“That was Claire’s phone.””

My stomach tightened.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Twelve years ago, Claire disappeared with that phone.””

The ringing stopped.

For a few seconds, there was complete silence.

Then the phone rang again.

Emily suddenly grabbed my arm.

“Ryan, please.””

I pulled away.

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I’m done being protected by lies.””

I stepped into the hidden passage.

The air smelled old and damp.

Like a place nobody was supposed to find.

The walls were scratched.

Not damaged.

Scratched.

Like someone had desperately tried to escape.

Lily stood behind me.

“Daddy, is my sister okay?””

I looked back.

The word struck me.

Sister.

After everything that happened, that was the simplest truth in the room.

“Yes.””

I forced myself to smile.

“She’s okay.””

Ava looked at me.

For the first time, she didn’t look afraid.

She looked like she believed me.

I continued deeper into the passage.

At the end was a small room.

Not big enough to live in.

But big enough to hide someone.

There was a mattress.

A blanket.

A small table.

And dozens of drawings pinned to the wall.

My breath caught.

Every drawing showed the same person.

Me.

Some were simple child drawings.

A tall man.

A house.

A little girl holding his hand.

At the bottom of one drawing were words written in shaky handwriting.

*My daddy will find me.*

I touched the paper.

My chest tightened.

“How long was she here?””

Daniel appeared behind me.

“Almost two years.””

I turned around.

“What?””

He looked at the floor.

“She was moved between places.””

“By who?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he pointed.

“Look.””

Near the mattress was a loose wooden board.

I pulled it up.

Underneath was a small metal box.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

And a key.

The first photo made my blood run cold.

It was Claire.

Holding baby Ava.

But standing beside her…

Was Emily.

They were smiling.

Like they were friends.

I looked at my wife.

“What is this?””

Emily started crying.

“I can explain.””

“No.””

I held up the picture.

“No more explanations. The truth.””

She covered her face.

“Claire came to me.””

The words came out slowly.

“She was scared.””

“Why?””

“Because someone was following her.””

“Who?””

Emily looked at Daniel.

Neither of them answered.

I slammed the photo onto the table.

“Who?””

Emily whispered:

“Your father.””

The room went silent.

My father had been dead for five years.

I stared at her.

“What did you just say?””

Emily looked terrified.

“Your father knew about Ava.””

“That’s impossible.””

“He knew before anyone else.””

I shook my head.

“My father hated secrets. He would have told me.””

Emily looked down.

“He was the reason you never knew.””

The words felt unreal.

I opened the metal box again.

Inside was a small cassette tape.

A label was attached.

My name was written on it.

*For Ryan. Play this when you know the truth.*

I looked around.

Nobody wanted me to touch it.

That alone told me I needed to.

I found an old player beside the mattress.

My hands trembled as I pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice.

A voice I hadn’t heard in twelve years.

“Ryan…”

My knees almost gave out.

Claire.

Older.

Tired.

Alive.

“If you’re hearing this, then they failed to keep you away from Ava.””

I covered my mouth.

Daniel looked away.

Emily started sobbing.

Claire’s voice continued.

“I need you to understand something.””

A pause.

Then she whispered:

“The man you called your father was never protecting you.””

The tape crackled.

And then came the sentence that changed everything.

“He was protecting the person who destroyed our family.””

The recording stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Then Ava quietly said:

“Daddy…”

I turned toward her.

She was staring at the doorway.

Her face was frozen with fear.

“Someone is here.””

I looked back.

A shadow stood at the entrance of the hidden room.

And a familiar voice said:

“Ryan.””

My blood turned cold.

May you like

Because I knew that voice.

It belonged to someone who was supposed to be dead.
