Chapter 3: The Man Behind the Wall

Nobody spoke.

The voice behind the wall was calm.

Too calm.

Ava pressed herself against my side, shaking.

I looked down at her.

A child I had never known existed.

A child who somehow had my eyes, my birthmark, and a story my wife had hidden from me.

Then I looked back into the darkness.

“Who are you?””

The figure didn’t answer immediately.

A slow movement followed.

A hand appeared first.

Then a man stepped into the hidden passage.

He was older than me, maybe in his fifties. His clothes were worn, his face exhausted, and he carried an old photograph in his hand.

The moment he saw me, his expression changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“You really don’t remember.””

I felt anger rise inside me.

“Remember what?””

The man looked at Emily.

“You never told him?””

Emily stepped between us.

“Leave.””

The man laughed quietly.

“After all these years, you still think you can hide the truth?””

I looked at Emily.

“All these years?””

She looked away.

My chest tightened.

“How long have you known this man?””

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“Ryan…”

“No.””

I pointed toward the stranger.

“No more secrets.””

The man held up the photograph.

“I think you deserve to see this.””

I didn’t want to take it.

But my hand moved anyway.

The photograph was old.

The edges were damaged.

There were three people in it.

A younger version of Emily.

The man standing in front of me.

And me.

I dropped the photograph.

Because I knew that face.

It was mine.

But younger.

Different.

Before I met Emily.

Before I built this life.

“That’s impossible.””

The man watched me carefully.

“You were told she never existed.””

My voice became a whisper.

“Who?””

He looked toward Ava.

“Your first daughter.””

The room spun.

I grabbed the wall for support.

“I don’t have a first daughter.””

The man’s expression hardened.

“That’s what they wanted you to believe.””

Emily started crying.

“Stop.””

The man ignored her.

“Ryan, twelve years ago, someone erased an entire part of your life.””

I stared at Emily.

“Is this true?””

She couldn’t look at me.

That was answer enough.

I felt betrayed.

Not by the stranger.

By the woman I had trusted with everything.

Lily stood near Ava, confused and frightened.

“Mommy?””

Emily immediately turned toward her.

“Oh, Lily…”

But Lily stepped back.

She had heard enough to know something was wrong.

The man looked at me.

“Your daughter has been hidden because someone was afraid you would come looking.””

“Who?””

He looked down at Ava.

“Someone who knew what would happen if you found her.””

I stepped forward.

“Who?””

The man reached into his coat and pulled out another item.

A small envelope.

“My daughter kept this for years.””

He handed it to me.

My name was written on the front.

Ryan.

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Only one sentence was written.

I read it once.

Then again.

My entire body went cold.

Because the handwriting belonged to someone who was supposed to be dead.

My first wife.

The woman everyone told me had disappeared twelve years ago.

The woman whose death certificate I had signed.

At the bottom of the letter were six words:

*“Ryan, trust nobody in this house.””*

May you like

And behind me, Emily whispered:

“Please don’t open the rest.””
