Chapter 8: The Night Everything Changed

I couldn’t speak.

Almost died.

The words echoed in my mind.

For twelve years, I remembered that night differently.

A storm.

A phone call from Claire.

An argument we never finished.

Then she disappeared.

Everyone told me she left.

Everyone told me to accept it.

But now she was standing in front of me, telling me the story I never knew.

“What happened that night?””

Claire looked at my father.

“He should tell you.””

My father remained silent.

I stepped toward him.

“Tell me.””

He looked older suddenly.

Not physically.

Something deeper.

Like the weight of years had finally caught up to him.

“I was trying to fix a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

He looked at Claire.

“Her.””

Claire’s face hardened.

“I wasn’t a mistake.””

My father sighed.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” I said.

“I don’t.””

I pointed toward the room.

“I don’t understand anything.””

My voice shook.

“I don’t understand why my wife disappeared. I don’t understand why my daughter lived behind a wall. I don’t understand why everyone decided I couldn’t handle the truth.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my father said:

“Because the truth would have destroyed you.””

I laughed.

“More than this?””

He looked down.

“Maybe.””

Claire stepped closer.

“Ryan, the night I disappeared, I discovered something.””

“What?””

She looked at Emily.

Emily lowered her eyes.

My stomach tightened.

“Emily was involved?””

Emily immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Claire looked at her.

“Not the way you think.””

I stared between them.

“Then explain.””

Claire took a deep breath.

“Your father was involved with a group of people who controlled everything around him.””

“What group?””

“I don’t know.””

The answer surprised me.

“But I know they were dangerous.””

She looked at Ava.

“When I found out I was pregnant, I realized they knew about her.””

I frowned.

“Why would they care about a baby?””

Claire’s face changed.

“Because Ava was evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

Claire looked at my father.

He closed his eyes.

Then he said quietly:

“Of what I did.””

Nobody moved.

I looked at him.

“What did you do?””

He didn’t answer.

Claire did.

“He changed records.””

My heart sank.

“What records?””

“Your family records. Medical records. Documents.””

I stared.

“Why?””

Claire looked at Ava.

“Because Ava wasn’t supposed to exist.””

The words felt impossible.

“She’s your daughter,” I said.

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then what do you mean?””

She hesitated.

“Someone wanted to erase her.””

Ava held onto my shirt.

I looked down at her.

The little girl who had spent years hidden.

The little girl who thought darkness behind a wall was normal.

I felt something inside me break.

I knelt beside her.

“I’m sorry.””

She looked confused.

“For what?””

I swallowed.

“For not finding you sooner.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You didn’t know.””

That simple sentence hurt more than anger.

Because she was right.

I didn’t know.

But someone did.

I stood again.

“Who wanted her erased?””

Nobody answered.

Then the lights suddenly went out.

The house fell into darkness.

Lily screamed.

I grabbed both girls.

“Stay with me.””

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Careful.

Someone was inside the house.

Daniel whispered:

“We need to leave.””

My father looked toward the hallway.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

He looked terrified.

“He’s here.””

Claire’s face went pale.

“Who?””

My father whispered a name.

A name I had never heard before.

But the reaction from everyone told me one thing.

May you like

Whoever it was…

They were the reason my family had been destroyed.
