Chapter 12: The Room That Was Never There

The basement was chaos.

Everyone was shouting.

The security men were gone.

Victoria was gone.

And somehow, she had left me a key.

A key she wanted me to find.

A key that made no sense.

Because the label attached to it had one word.

*Nursery.*

I looked at Claire.

“Did we have a nursery?””

Her face changed.

“No.””

My father went silent.

That scared me.

“What?””

He looked at the key.

“Your childhood home had one.””

I stared at him.

“My childhood home?””

He nodded slowly.

“The house where you were born.””

I felt a strange pressure in my chest.

“I don’t remember it.””

Nobody spoke.

Because they all knew why.

I looked at my father.

“What did you do?””

He looked ashamed.

“I had to move you.””

“Why?””

“Because they were looking for you.””

I looked at Ava.

Then Lily.

Two daughters.

Two lives.

Both connected to secrets I never chose.

I walked upstairs.

Nobody stopped me.

Maybe because they knew I deserved the truth.

Maybe because they knew I would find it anyway.

The key led me to a room at the end of the hallway.

A room I had never noticed before.

There was a small wooden door hidden behind an old bookshelf.

My hands shook as I moved it aside.

The key fit perfectly.

The lock clicked.

The door opened.

Inside was a nursery.

Frozen in time.

A small crib.

Old toys.

Faded wallpaper.

And photographs.

Hundreds of them.

My childhood.

My mother.

My real father.

A family I never knew existed.

I stepped inside.

On the wall was a picture of me as a baby.

Beside it was a note.

Ryan, if you ever find this room, it means you finally know who you are.

I sat down.

My hands trembled.

The note continued.

Your father wanted to tell you everything. I wanted to tell you everything. But we were afraid.

I turned the page.

Not because of what would happen to us.

A pause.

Because of what would happen to you.

I looked around the room.

A lifetime of missing memories.

Hidden behind a door.

Then I found a small wooden box.

Inside was a bracelet.

A baby bracelet.

My name was written on it.

And beside it…

Another bracelet.

Ava.

My heart stopped.

I picked it up.

Why would my biological father have a bracelet with Ava’s name?

A sound came from the doorway.

I turned.

Claire stood there.

Tears in her eyes.

“You found it.””

I held up the bracelet.

“Explain.””

She stepped inside.

“Your father knew.””

“Knew what?””

She looked at me.

“That Ava wasn’t the first child they tried to erase.””

The room went cold.

“What?””

Claire closed the door behind her.

“Ryan…”

Her voice shook.

“There was another child.””

I stared.

“Who?””

Claire looked at the bracelet in my hand.

Then she whispered:

“Your twin sister.””

I froze.

“That’s impossible.””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

She looked toward the hidden room.

“She was taken the same night you were separated.””

My breathing stopped.

A twin sister.

Another missing child.

Another secret.

Another lie.

Then my phone suddenly vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

One sentence.

*Stop searching, Ryan. You were never the child they wanted.*

I looked at Claire.

“What does that mean?””

Before she could answer, another message arrived.

This time with a photograph attached.

A photograph of a woman.

A woman who looked exactly like me.

May you like

And underneath it were three words:

*She survived.*
