Chapter 14: The Archive Beneath the House
The old house looked abandoned.
Broken windows.
Overgrown grass.
A place forgotten by everyone.
Except us.
I stood at the front gate, staring at the place where my life began.
I had no memories of it.
Only stories.
Stories that were never true.
Ava held my hand.
“Daddy?””
I looked down.
“Yes?””
“Did you live here?””
I nodded.
“A long time ago.””
She looked at the house.
“Why did you leave?””
I didn’t know how to answer.
Because the truth was complicated.
Because adults had spent years making decisions that changed my entire life.
“I think someone wanted me to forget.””
Ava squeezed my hand.
“Don’t forget anymore.””
The simplicity of her words almost broke me.
We entered through the front door.
The house smelled like dust and old wood.
Every room felt like a memory I had lost.
My father walked behind us quietly.
I barely spoke to him.
I didn’t know if I could forgive him.
Not yet.
But I also knew something.
He was the only person who knew enough to guide us here.
“The basement is this way.””
His voice was low.
I followed.
The basement was smaller than I expected.
Just shelves.
Boxes.
Nothing unusual.
Until my father moved a cabinet.
Behind it was another door.
A hidden door.
Of course.
I almost laughed.
My entire family seemed to build secret rooms instead of having conversations.
The key from Victoria fit the lock.
The door opened.
Inside was a massive underground room.
Shelves covered every wall.
Thousands of files.
Photographs.
Recordings.
Documents.
A lifetime of stolen truths.
Claire whispered:
“The archive.””
I walked forward.
Every step felt heavier.
Daniel searched through the shelves.
My father stood still.
“You knew this was here?””
He nodded.
“I found it years ago.””
“And you never showed me?””
He looked ashamed.
“I was afraid.””
I turned toward him.
“Everyone was afraid.””
He looked at me.
“Yes.””
A small sound came from deeper inside the archive.
Everyone froze.
A voice.
A woman’s voice.
“Ryan?””
My heart stopped.
I knew that voice.
Not because I had heard it before.
Because somehow…
I recognized it.
I walked forward.
“Who’s there?””
A figure stepped from behind the shelves.
A woman.
She looked older.
Tired.
But alive.
The photograph on my phone fell from my hand.
“Emma?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You found me.””
The world stopped.
My twin sister.
The person erased from my life.
Standing in front of me.
I couldn’t speak.
She walked closer.
“You look exactly like him.””
I swallowed.
“Like who?””
She smiled sadly.
“Our father.””
I wanted to ask a thousand questions.
Why she disappeared.
Who took her.
Why nobody told me.
But one question came first.
“Why didn’t you find me?””
Her expression broke.
“Because I tried.””
The pain in her voice was real.
“I tried for years.””
“Then why?””
She looked toward my father.
Then Claire.
Then Daniel.
“Because every time I got close…”
She paused.
“They moved you.””
I looked at my father.
His face turned pale.
Emma continued.
“They wanted you safe.””
“Who?””
She looked at the archive around us.
“The people who built this.””
I stepped closer.
“Victoria?””
Emma shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice became a whisper.
“Victoria works for them.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then who is above her?””
Emma reached for a file.
She opened it.
Inside was a symbol.
A symbol I had never seen before.
But everyone else reacted.
My father stepped backward.
Claire covered her mouth.
Daniel whispered:
“No…”
I looked at them.
“What?””
Emma looked at me.
“The person who started all of this.””
She handed me the file.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of a man.
A man I knew.
A man who had been dead for years.
My hands trembled.

Because the name written underneath was:
*Founder: Ryan Carter.*
