Chapter 9: The Letter Emily Never Wanted Me to Read

I couldn't open the envelope.

My fingers had gone numb, and the handwriting on the front seemed to blur before my eyes.

The second child.

Emily had known.

Whatever the truth was, my wife had known there might be another child connected to me.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Where did you get this?””

“From the clinic records your mother kept.””

“Why didn't you show it to me before?””

“Because I didn't know whether you would believe me.””

“You brought a child into a public building and told her I might be her father. You threatened my daughter. You tried to take control of her trust. And now you're asking me to believe you?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“I never wanted things to happen this way.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Then you should have made different choices.””

Lily stood between us, clutching her backpack. She looked frightened, confused, and far too young to understand the war the adults around her had created.

I crouched beside her.

“Lily, I'm going to ask you something, and you don't have to answer if you're uncomfortable. Has anyone ever told you that I'm your father?””

She nodded.

“Mommy told me when I turned seven.””

“And before that?””

“She said my daddy wasn't ready to meet me.””

My throat tightened.

“Did she tell you why?””

Lily shook her head.

“Only that he had another family and that I shouldn't make him sad.””

I looked away.

I couldn't bear the thought of a child growing up believing she was unwanted because the adults around her had decided she was a secret.

Daniel approached quietly.

“Michael, the officers need to speak with Vanessa about the threat against Sophie and the financial documents. We should also make arrangements to establish Lily's identity and parentage through the proper legal process.””

I nodded.

“Do whatever needs to be done.””

Vanessa immediately stiffened.

“You can't take Lily from me.””

“No one is taking your child,” Daniel said.

“But there are serious allegations that need to be investigated, and her welfare matters.””

Vanessa turned toward me.

“Michael, please. Don't let them separate us.””

I stared at her.

“You separated me from the truth for years. You made me believe Grace was a thief. You made my daughter afraid to speak. You brought Lily here without considering what it would do to her.””

“I was desperate.””

“So was Emily when she was dying. So was Sophie when she watched me throw away the only person she trusted.””

My voice broke.

“And I was too blind to see any of it.””

Vanessa lowered her head.

For a moment, I almost felt sorry for her.

Then I remembered the photograph of Sophie sleeping in her bed.

The sympathy disappeared.

Daniel escorted me into a private room while the officers continued speaking with Vanessa. Lily remained with a female officer and a child-welfare specialist, who explained that she would not be punished for anything her mother had done.

I sat at the table and finally opened Emily's envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter and a copy of a hospital document.

The letter began with a date from seven years earlier.

Michael,

I don't know whether you'll ever read this. I hope you never have to. But if you do, then someone has finally uncovered the secret I was too frightened to explain.

Before Sophie was born, I learned that Vanessa Lawson had been involved with a man who shared your name and had access to your medical records.

I stopped.

My medical records?

I continued.

At first, I believed it was a coincidence. Then I discovered that Vanessa had been asking questions about your family, your finances, and the trust we planned to establish for our child.

I confronted her. She claimed she was helping a friend. I didn't believe her.

Months later, Richard Lawson told me that Vanessa had given birth to a daughter and claimed the father was Michael Carter.

My heart pounded.

I knew there could be more than one man with that name. But Vanessa had obtained information about our family that no stranger should have possessed. She knew about your father's estate, our plans for Sophie's trust, and even the name of the clinic where we intended to deliver our daughter.

I looked at the hospital document.

It was a birth registration form, but several fields had been crossed out and replaced.

The father's name had originally been listed as Michael Carter.

Beside it was a handwritten note:

Identity unverified. Further documentation required.

I turned back to the letter.

I asked Vanessa to provide proof. She refused. She told me the child had been conceived during an affair, and that the father had promised to support her.

When I asked which Michael Carter she meant, she became furious.

I later discovered that someone had submitted documents claiming the father was my husband. I knew those documents could not be trusted without verification.

I swallowed hard.

Emily wasn't saying I definitely had another daughter.

She was saying someone had used my identity.

But why?

I read the final paragraphs.

Michael, if Lily is truly your child, she deserves to know the truth. She deserves love, protection, and a life free from the lies that have surrounded her.

But if Vanessa has forged your identity to gain access to our family, then Lily may be another victim of her scheme.

Please don't punish a child for the sins of the adults who raised her.

And please, Michael, don't let your anger make you cruel.

I lowered the letter.

Emily had known I would struggle with this.

She had known that, faced with betrayal, I might reach for anger before compassion.

And she had asked me not to.

Daniel returned to the room.

“Are you all right?””

“No.””

He sat opposite me.

“What did the letter say?””

I explained everything.

He listened without interruption, then examined the birth registration form.

“This supports the need for an investigation. It does not establish that Lily is your daughter.””

“I understand.””

“We need authenticated records, a properly conducted DNA test if appropriate, and a review of how the original documents were altered. We also need to determine whether someone deliberately used your identity.””

I looked toward the door.

“Vanessa knows the truth.””

“Perhaps. Or perhaps she has been repeating a story she wants to believe.””

“Do you think she could have fabricated the entire thing?””

“I think we need evidence before deciding.””

I rubbed my face.

“Then let's find it.””

Daniel made several calls. He contacted the attorney who had handled Sophie's original trust, requested certified copies of the birth records, and arranged for the relevant documents to be preserved for investigators.

Meanwhile, I asked to speak with Lily.

The child-welfare specialist brought her into the room after confirming that she was comfortable talking to me.

She sat in a chair opposite mine, her backpack resting on her knees.

“Hi, Lily.””

“Hi.””

“Would you like some water?””

She nodded.

I poured her a glass and slid it across the table.

For a few seconds, we sat in silence.

Then she asked, “Are you mad at me?””

The question nearly broke my heart.

“No, sweetheart. I'm not mad at you.””

“Mommy said you might be.””

“Your mommy and I have a lot of things to work out. None of them are your fault.””

Lily studied me.

“Do you have a daughter named Sophie?””

“Yes.””

“Does she know about me?””

“She does now.””

“Will she hate me?””

I leaned forward.

“No. And if she feels confused or upset, we'll help her understand. You don't have to earn the right to be treated kindly.””

Lily looked down at her hands.

“I always wanted a sister.””

I couldn't speak for a moment.

Then I said, “Whatever the truth turns out to be, you deserve to be safe. And you deserve honest answers.””

She nodded slowly.

Before the specialist led her away, Lily reached into her backpack and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“Mommy said I shouldn't show anyone this.””

She placed it on the table.

It was a photograph of Vanessa standing outside the private clinic beside Richard Lawson.

On the back was a handwritten date and a short note:

The night the second child was registered.

I looked at Daniel.

“Can you check the date against the clinic records?””

He nodded.

Then Lily spoke again.

“There's something else.””

I turned toward her.

“What is it?””

She swallowed.

“Mommy told me that if anything happened to her, I should find Grandma Evelyn. She said Grandma Evelyn knows who my real daddy is.””

My heart stopped.

Before I could ask another question, Daniel's phone rang.

He answered, listened, and slowly stood.

“What is it?”” I demanded.

He covered the microphone.

“The clinic has located a sealed file associated with Vanessa Lawson's original registration.””

“What does it say?””

Daniel listened for another moment.

Then he looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.

“Michael, the file contains a DNA test dated seven years ago.””

I gripped the edge of the table.

“And?””

He swallowed.

“The report identifies a biological father.””

“Who?””

Daniel turned the phone toward me.

The name printed across the top of the document was unmistakable.

*Michael Carter.*

But beneath it, in smaller letters, was a second line.

Sample source: deceased male, identity established through archived medical records.

I stared at the report.

The sample hadn't come from me.

It had come from someone who was already dead when Lily was born.

Someone whose name I knew better than my own.

Daniel whispered the words I wasn't ready to hear.

“Michael, the biological father identified in this report is your father.””

My father had been dead for eight years.

And somehow, his name had been used to connect Vanessa's child to our family.

Before I could speak, another document slipped from the clinic's file.

It was a letter from Emily to my mother, dated three days before Emily's death.

There was only one sentence on the page.

Evelyn, if Vanessa discovers that Lily is your son's half-sister, she will use that child to destroy everything we've built.

I read it twice.

Then I looked through the glass wall toward the waiting area, where Lily sat quietly beside the specialist.

She might not be my daughter.

But if the report was authentic, she might be Sophie's half-sister.

And the woman who had spent years manipulating my family had brought her into my life for a reason I still didn't understand.

My phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

You have the wrong DNA report.

A second message followed.

Ask Evelyn who paid for the test.

Then came a photograph of my mother standing outside the private clinic, holding a newborn baby.

May you like

On the back of the photograph, someone had written a name.

*Vanessa Carter.*
