Chapter 13: My Mother's Last Lie

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

The detective's words hung between us like a death sentence.

Evelyn Carter.

My mother.

The woman who had taught me to tie my shoes, sat beside Emily's hospital bed, and held Sophie during the funeral.

The woman who had spent the last two days crying in front of me, claiming she was terrified of Vanessa.

“That's impossible,” I finally said.

“Mr. Carter, I understand this is difficult. We're not making an accusation based solely on a name. Peter Shaw identified your mother as someone who had access to the records, and the hospital's visitor log places her there that night.””

“What time?””

“Approximately 11:40 p.m.””

Emily had died just after midnight.

I looked across Daniel's office at Sophie, who was sitting beside Grace with the pink rabbit in her lap. She was showing Grace a drawing of our family, oblivious to the fact that the foundation of everything she'd ever known was crumbling beneath us.

“Was my mother arrested?””

“No. We asked her to come in for an interview. She agreed, but she hasn't arrived.””

I closed my eyes.

“Where is she?””

“We believe she's at her home. Officers are on their way.””

“Don't question her without me.””

“Mr. Carter, that's not necessarily—”

“I need to hear this from her.””

The detective paused.

“Come to the station. We'll arrange it properly.””

The call ended.

Daniel stood.

“Michael, don't go to her house. Let the police handle it.””

“I need answers.””

“And you'll get them. But if you confront her alone, you could compromise the investigation.””

He was right.

I hated that he was right.

I crouched in front of Sophie.

“Sweetheart, Daddy has to go somewhere for a little while.””

“Are you going to find Grandma?””

I hesitated.

“Yes.””

“Is she in trouble?””

I glanced at Grace.

She gave me a small, reassuring nod.

“Daddy doesn't know yet,” I told Sophie.

“But whatever happens, you are safe. That's the most important thing.””

Sophie hugged my neck.

“Can I keep Mommy's rabbit?””

“Always.””

I kissed her forehead and stood.

Grace followed me toward the door.

“Michael.””

I turned.

“Don't let what your mother may have done make you forget what Emily taught you,” she said.

“Find the truth before you decide what it means.””

I nodded, then left.

At the police station, Detective Harris led me into a private interview room. Peter Shaw sat behind a glass partition in an adjacent room, speaking with another investigator.

He looked older than I remembered.

His expensive suit was wrinkled. His hair was uncombed. He kept rubbing his hands together as if he couldn't get them clean.

Detective Harris placed a folder on the table.

“Peter claims he can explain the altered trust documents, the payments to the fraudulent account, and the events surrounding Emily's final hospitalization.””

“Then let him explain.””

The detective studied me.

“He also says your mother knew Vanessa's identity long before you did.””

I sat down.

“Bring him in.””

A few minutes later, Peter entered with an officer and sat across from me.

He wouldn't meet my eyes.

“You have a lot to explain,” I said.

Peter swallowed.

“I know.””

“Did you alter Sophie's trust documents?””

“Yes.””

The answer came so quickly that I almost didn't understand it.

“You forged my signature?””

“Yes.””

“And Emily's?””

He nodded.

My hands clenched beneath the table.

“Why?””

“Vanessa threatened me. She had evidence of financial irregularities from years earlier. She said she'd destroy me unless I helped her.””

“So you helped her steal from my daughter?””

“I told myself it was only paperwork. The trust wasn't supposed to be transferred immediately.””

“Then what was it supposed to do?””

Peter finally looked at me.

“It would give Vanessa authority to manage certain assets if you became incapacitated or if Sophie was placed under a different guardianship arrangement.””

The room seemed to shrink.

“She planned to remove Sophie from my home.””

“Yes.””

“And you helped her.””

“I thought she wanted control of the money. I didn't know how far she would go.””

“Don't insult me.””

Peter flinched.

Detective Harris placed another document on the table.

“Tell him about Evelyn Carter.””

Peter stared at it.

“Your mother knew Vanessa was your half-sister,” he said.

“She knew Vanessa had approached me about the estate. But she didn't authorize the trust fraud.””

“Then why was she at the hospital?””

“Because Vanessa called her.””

My pulse quickened.

“What did Vanessa want?””

“Emily had discovered the original trust agreement and the documents relating to Thomas Carter's other child. She was threatening to turn everything over to the authorities.””

“Lily?””

Peter nodded.

“Vanessa wanted the records destroyed. Your mother went to the hospital because she thought Emily might have copies hidden in her room.””

“Did she touch Emily's medication?””

“No.””

The answer came firmly.

For the first time, Peter looked almost offended.

“Evelyn never wanted Emily dead. She wanted the scandal contained. She thought she could persuade Emily to keep quiet until the estate matters were settled.””

“Then who altered the medical records?””

Peter's face went pale.

“Vanessa had access to someone in the hospital administration. Dr. Lawson knew records had been changed, but he didn't do it himself.””

“Who did?””

“An administrator named Paul Mercer. He altered timestamps and removed notes about unauthorized visitors. Vanessa paid him through a consulting company.””

Detective Harris wrote something down.

“And Emily's death?””

Peter stared at his hands.

“I don't know whether Vanessa caused it. I never saw her administer anything. I heard her threaten Emily, and I helped cover up the paperwork afterward. That's what I can prove.””

I felt a terrible mixture of relief and rage.

My mother might not have killed Emily.

But she had entered my wife's hospital room in the middle of the night, searching for documents while Emily lay dying.

“Why didn't you tell the police sooner?””

“Vanessa has the original files. She told me that if I talked, she'd release everything about my financial misconduct and make it look as though I planned Emily's death.””

He leaned forward.

“She has something else, Michael. Something she says will destroy your family.””

“What?””

Peter's lips trembled.

“Your father left a sealed letter. Vanessa believes it proves the Carter estate was never supposed to belong entirely to you.””

Before I could respond, Detective Harris's phone rang.

He listened for several seconds, then stood.

“Understood. Keep the officers there.””

He ended the call and looked at me.

“Your mother has arrived at the station.””

I rose.

“Take me to her.””

Detective Harris opened the door, but before we left the room, Peter grabbed my sleeve.

“Michael, wait.””

I looked down at him.

“There's one more thing.””

“What now?””

Peter's voice dropped to a whisper.

“Vanessa knows we've found the recordings. She sent me a message ten minutes ago.””

He slid a small piece of paper across the table.

Written on it were eight words.

The girl is with me. Bring the letter.

My blood turned to ice.

“Which girl?””

Peter looked at me with horror in his eyes.

“Lily.””

I immediately called Daniel.

He answered on the first ring.

“Michael, where are you? Something's happened.””

“What?””

“Sophie is safe. Grace is with her. But Lily disappeared from the office waiting room while the assistant was speaking with the police.””

I gripped the phone.

“Has anyone seen Vanessa?””

Daniel's voice tightened.

“She was spotted outside the building twenty minutes ago.””

The detective was already calling for officers.

I stared at the paper in my hand.

Vanessa had taken Lily.

Her own daughter.

And whatever she wanted from me was important enough that she'd decided to use a child to get it.

For the first time, I understood that this wasn't merely a fight over money, identity, or a dead woman's secrets.

May you like

It was a fight over what Vanessa believed she had been denied her entire life.

And she was willing to make innocent children pay for it.
