Chapter 12: The Last Message From Emily
“That's impossible.””
The words left my mouth before I could stop them.
Grace lowered her eyes.
“Sophie was only a baby when Emily died.””
“Exactly. How could Emily give her a recording?””
“She didn't give it to Sophie to watch immediately. She placed it inside something Sophie would keep when she grew older.””
“What?””
Grace hesitated.
“Her stuffed rabbit.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
The rabbit.
The same pale pink toy Sophie carried everywhere. Emily had bought it shortly before she became seriously ill, and Sophie refused to sleep without it.
It had traveled with us to hospitals, family vacations, school events, and even Emily's funeral.
I suddenly remembered the way Grace always insisted on repairing it herself whenever a seam came loose.
“You knew something was inside it?””
“I knew Emily had hidden something there. She made me promise not to open it unless you discovered the truth about Vanessa.””
“Why?””
“Because she wanted Sophie to have one thing that nobody else could take away. A message from her mother.””
My throat tightened.
“Then we need to find it.””
Daniel called his assistant and asked her to bring Sophie to the private meeting room at his office. We left the church together, Grace sitting silently beside me in the back seat.
I wanted to ask her a hundred questions.
Instead, I looked at her hands.
They were rough from years of cleaning, with small cracks along the knuckles. The pink ribbon Sophie had tied around her wrist was still there.
“Grace,” I said quietly, “after all this is over, I want you to come home.””
She didn't answer.
“I know I don't deserve to ask. But Sophie needs you.””
Grace turned toward me.
“Mr. Carter, I love that little girl. But I won't return to a house where my honesty can be destroyed by someone else's accusation.””
I lowered my head.
“You're right.””
“I need to know you'll listen to your daughter. Even when what she says makes you uncomfortable.””
“I will.””
“And I need you to understand that protecting Sophie isn't a job you can hand to someone else.””
I looked at her.
“I understand that now.””
Grace studied me for a long moment.
Then she nodded.
“We'll see.””
When we arrived at Daniel's office, Sophie was sitting on the sofa with her rabbit tucked beneath her arm.
The moment she saw Grace, she screamed.
“GRANDMA GRACE!””
She jumped down and ran across the room.
Grace dropped to her knees just in time to catch her.
They held each other so tightly that neither seemed able to speak.
I turned away, ashamed of the tears filling my eyes.
Sophie finally pulled back.
“Daddy said you didn't steal the necklace.””
Grace smiled through her tears.
“I know, sweetheart.””
“Are you coming home?””
Grace glanced at me.
“Not tonight, darling. But I'm not going anywhere.””
Sophie hugged her again.
Then Grace gently touched the rabbit.
“Sweetheart, do you remember when your mommy gave you this?””
Sophie nodded.
“She said he was supposed to keep my dreams safe.””
“That's right.””
Grace looked at me.
“Emily sewed a small pocket inside the lining. She told me the rabbit would be the safest place because Sophie never let anyone take it.””
I knelt beside my daughter.
“May I look at your rabbit, sweetheart?””
She hesitated.
“Are you going to break him?””
“No. I promise we'll be careful.””
After a moment, she placed the toy in my hands.
Grace showed Daniel a tiny line of stitching beneath the rabbit's left ear. It was almost invisible, hidden beneath a patch of pale fabric.
Using a small pair of scissors, Daniel carefully opened the seam.
Inside was a waterproof pouch.
He removed it.
A miniature memory card fell into his palm.
Beside it was a folded piece of paper.
Emily's handwriting.
For Sophie, when the truth finally comes home.
My hands began to shake.
Daniel connected the card to an offline laptop while Grace sat beside Sophie.
A single video file appeared.
Its date was three days before Emily died.
I pressed play.
My wife appeared on the screen.
She was sitting in her hospital bed, wearing the blue cardigan I'd bought her for our anniversary. Her hair was thin, her skin pale, but her eyes were steady.
For several seconds, she simply looked into the camera.
Then she smiled.
“Hello, my beautiful girl.””
Sophie leaned forward.
“Mommy?””
Emily continued.
“If you're watching this, sweetheart, then you're probably much older than you are right now. I hope you've grown into a brave, kind little girl. I hope you still laugh when your daddy sings badly in the kitchen.””
A sob escaped my throat.
Sophie looked at me.
“Daddy, she's talking about you.””
I nodded, unable to speak.
Emily's smile faded slightly.
“There's something I need you to know. Your daddy is a good man, but sometimes he believes that being strong means solving everything alone. If he's watching this with you, I want him to understand that love isn't about never making mistakes. It's about having the courage to face them.””
She paused, taking a shallow breath.
Then her expression changed.
“Michael, if you're hearing this, Grace has probably already told you some of what happened. Please believe her. She stayed with us because I asked her to. She risked more than you know.””
I looked toward Grace.
She was crying silently.
Emily continued.
“I found evidence that someone had altered Sophie's trust documents. I also discovered that Vanessa had been using information connected to your father's estate to create false claims against our family.””
Her voice trembled.
“I confronted Peter Shaw. He admitted he had helped prepare documents that were never properly authorized. He said Vanessa had threatened to expose his financial misconduct if he refused.””
I felt Daniel straighten beside me.
Emily looked directly into the camera.
“I wanted to tell you everything, Michael. But I was afraid Peter would destroy the evidence before you could protect Sophie.””
She lifted a folder into view.
“I made copies. Grace knows where they are. But there's one more thing.””
Emily paused.
For the first time, fear appeared in her eyes.
“Richard Lawson knew my medical records had been changed. He told me someone had accessed my file without authorization. He promised to investigate.””
She swallowed.
“Then he came to my room and told me to stop asking questions.””
My hands curled into fists.
On the screen, Emily took another shallow breath.
“I don't know whether anyone deliberately harmed me. I won't accuse someone of that without proof. But I know that my treatment records were altered, and I know Vanessa was involved in trying to keep me silent.””
She looked down at her hands.
“Michael, please don't let anger destroy you. Find the truth. Protect Sophie. And remember that Vanessa's child is innocent, no matter what her mother has done.””
Sophie leaned against Grace.
Emily smiled again.
“And Sophie, sweetheart, if Grandma Grace is there with you, give her a hug for me.””
Grace covered her mouth.
Sophie wrapped her arms around her.
On the screen, Emily's eyes filled with tears.
“I love you, my little star. More than all the stars in the sky.””
The video ended.
For a long moment, nobody spoke.
I stared at the blank screen.
Then Daniel reached toward the laptop.
“There's another file.””
I looked up.
“What?””
“A hidden directory. It contains scanned documents.””
He opened it.
There were copies of financial transfers, emails between Peter Shaw and Vanessa, and several medical record entries showing discrepancies in Emily's treatment.
One document immediately caught my attention.
It was a signed statement from a hospital employee who had witnessed an unauthorized visitor entering Emily's room shortly before her condition deteriorated.
The visitor's name was listed as Vanessa Lawson.
Beneath the statement was an attachment containing a photograph from the hospital's security system.
Vanessa stood beside Emily's bed.
In her hand was a small bottle.
I felt my stomach turn.
Daniel leaned closer.
“We need the original security footage and the employee's testimony. This is important evidence, but we still need to establish what happened.””
I nodded slowly.
Then my phone rang.
An Atlanta detective introduced himself.
“Mr. Carter, we've located Peter Shaw.””
“Where is he?””
“At a private residence outside the city. He's agreed to speak with us.””
“Has he confessed?””
“Not yet. But he says he has information about Emily Carter's final hospitalization.””
My heart began hammering.
“What information?””
The detective paused.
“He claims Vanessa didn't act alone.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Who helped her?””
The detective's voice lowered.
“Mr. Carter, Peter says the person who authorized the altered medical paperwork was someone with direct access to your wife's records.””
“Richard Lawson?””
“No.””
I felt a chill spread through my body.
“Then who?””
The detective hesitated.
“He gave us a name. And according to the hospital's records, that person was present on the night your wife died.””
I gripped the phone.
“Tell me.””
The detective spoke two words.
May you like
“Evelyn Carter.””
My mother.
