Chapter 7: The Signature That Could Destroy My Family

My mother had sent me a warning.

Emily hadn't known everything.

I stared at the message while Sophie slept against my shoulder in the back seat of Daniel's car. Outside, Atlanta's streetlights slid across the windows, turning the passing buildings into streaks of gold.

“Daniel,” I said, “take us to your office.””

He glanced at me in the rearview mirror.

“Why?””

“Because I need to know whether my daughter legally belongs to me.””

He didn't answer immediately.

Then he pulled into the next parking lot and turned toward me.

“Michael, don't jump to conclusions. Whatever your mother and Emily were hiding, we need documents, not guesses.””

“What if Vanessa isn't who she says she is? What if the trust isn't what I thought it was?””

“Then we'll find out.””

I looked down at Sophie.

She was holding Emily's letter in one hand and her stuffed rabbit in the other. Even asleep, she had curled her fingers around the paper as though she was afraid someone might take it.

I had built my entire life around the belief that I could protect her.

Yet someone had entered my home, threatened her, and used my trust to manipulate me.

And I'd been so busy chasing the comfort Vanessa offered that I hadn't noticed my daughter was frightened in her own house.

At Daniel's office, we settled Sophie in a quiet conference room with a blanket and a glass of milk. One of his assistants stayed nearby while Daniel spread the documents across his desk.

The original trust agreement was among the papers Emily had left behind.

I recognized my signature on the last page.

Daniel studied it through his reading glasses.

“Do you remember signing this?””

“Yes. Emily and I created the trust shortly before Sophie was born. We wanted her future secured, regardless of what happened to either of us.””

“Do you remember the witness?””

I looked at the bottom of the page.

*Evelyn Carter.*

My mother.

The second witness was Richard Lawson.

I felt a cold pressure settle in my chest.

“Why was Emily's doctor witnessing a financial agreement?””

“That's a question we need to answer,” Daniel said.

“But it doesn't establish wrongdoing by itself.””

He turned another page.

“Look here. This agreement was amended six months after the original trust was established.””

I leaned closer.

The amendment changed the procedure for appointing a financial representative if both parents became unable to act on Sophie's behalf.

The name listed as the designated alternate representative was Vanessa Reed.

I stared at it.

“She wasn't even in our lives then.””

“According to the document, the amendment was executed seven years ago.””

“That would have been before Sophie was born.””

Daniel nodded.

“Which means either you and Emily knew Vanessa by another name, or someone has inserted a document into the file that doesn't belong there.””

He compared the signatures.

“The signature attributed to you on the amendment is similar to yours, but I can't authenticate it. We'll need a qualified examiner.””

“What about Emily's signature?””

He pointed to the bottom.

“That one appears different from the signature on the original agreement, too.””

I pushed away from the desk.

“So someone forged both our signatures?””

“I said they appear different. We need professional verification.””

I ran my hands through my hair.

“Daniel, if Vanessa has been listed as Sophie's alternate representative since before she was born, this wasn't some spontaneous scheme to steal money. Someone planned this years ago.””

“Possibly. But we don't know who created the amendment or why.””

I thought about Emily's letter.

Ask Evelyn what happened at the private clinic before Sophie was born.

I called my mother.

She answered on the second ring.

“Michael?””

“I'm looking at the trust agreement. Your name is on it. So is Richard Lawson's. And there's an amendment naming Vanessa as Sophie's alternate financial representative.””

I heard her inhale sharply.

“Where did you get that?””

“From my wife's belongings.””

“Michael, you need to stop looking through those papers.””

“Why?””

“Because you don't understand what you're doing.””

“Then explain it to me.””

She began crying.

I closed my eyes.

“Mom, someone threatened Sophie tonight. Someone took a photograph of her sleeping in our house. If you know anything that can help protect her, you have to tell me.””

My mother went quiet.

Then she whispered, “Vanessa is on her way here.””

“I know. I saw the photograph.””

“She's coming to get something.””

“What?””

“The original birth records.””

My blood ran cold.

“What birth records?””

She didn't answer.

“Mom!””

“Your father and I kept them in a locked cabinet after Emily died. Vanessa knows where they are.””

I stood so abruptly that my chair scraped across the floor.

“Why would Vanessa want Sophie's birth records?””

My mother gave a broken sob.

“Because Emily discovered that the original paperwork had been changed.””

I gripped the phone.

“Changed how?””

“I can't explain it on the phone.””

“You said that before. I'm done with secrets.””

“Michael, please. I never wanted you to suffer.””

“You let me believe my wife died without knowing the truth. You let me bring Vanessa into my home. And now my daughter is in danger.””

“I know.””

“Then tell me what happened.””

My mother whispered something that made my knees weaken.

“Emily wasn't the only person who signed those papers, Michael. Your father signed them, too.””

“My father has been dead for eight years.””

“I know.””

She began sobbing harder.

“He signed them before Sophie was born, when we thought we were protecting someone. I didn't understand what Vanessa would eventually do with them.””

I struggled to breathe.

“Who were you protecting?””

A door slammed on her end of the call.

Then I heard Vanessa's voice.

“Evelyn, you promised me you'd never tell him.””

My mother gasped.

The phone fell silent.

“Mom?””

No answer.

“Mom!””

Then Vanessa came onto the line.

“Hello, Michael.””

Her voice was calm, almost affectionate.

“Where is my mother?”” I demanded.

“She's safe. For now.””

“Put her on the phone.””

“Not until you stop digging into things that don't concern you.””

“They concern my daughter.””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“Do they? Because the truth about Sophie might be very different from what you've been told.””

I felt the room spin.

“What are you talking about?””

“You should ask your mother why she insisted on being present at the clinic the day Sophie was born.””

“Vanessa, if you touch my mother—”

“Bring me Emily's original recording, Michael. The complete recording. Not the little pieces you've been watching.””

“How do you know what we've seen?””

“Because I know where Emily hid the rest.””

Then she whispered a sentence that made every hair on my arms stand up.

“Your wife didn't leave you a confession. She left you a countdown.””

The call ended.

Daniel was already reaching for his phone.

But before he could speak, the conference room door opened.

His assistant stood there, pale and trembling.

“Mr. Carter,” she said, “there's a woman downstairs asking for you.””

“Who?””

She swallowed.

“She says her name is Vanessa Lawson.””

Then she added the words that turned my blood to ice.

“She brought a little girl with her.””
