Chapter 4: The Recording From My Wife’s Final Night

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

Sophie stood at the top of the staircase, clutching the tiny memory card between two fingers. Behind me, Vanessa had gone completely silent.

“Sweetheart,” I said carefully, “where did you get that?””

“Grandma Grace gave it to me last week.”” Sophie looked at Vanessa, then quickly lowered her eyes.

“She told me to keep it somewhere safe.””

Vanessa stepped into the hallway.

“Sophie, darling, give that to me.””

My daughter immediately backed away.

“No!””

It was the first time I'd ever heard Sophie shout at Vanessa.

Vanessa's smile tightened.

“There's no reason to be frightened. It's just a little computer card.””

“She said you would ask for it,” Sophie whispered.

I moved between them.

“That's enough, Vanessa.””

She stared at me.

“Michael, this is ridiculous. You're allowing a six-year-old to manipulate you because she's upset about the housekeeper.””

“Don't speak about my daughter that way.””

“I'm trying to help you!””

“Then stop trying to take things from her.””

For a moment, the hallway was completely still.

Then Vanessa looked at Sophie with an expression that made my blood run cold.

“You really shouldn't have listened to Grace.””

Sophie began to cry.

I picked her up and carried her into Emily's old bedroom, shutting the door behind us. Vanessa remained in the hallway, calling my name, but I ignored her.

I placed Sophie on the bed and knelt in front of her.

“You haven't done anything wrong,” I told her.

“Do you understand?””

She nodded, although she was trembling.

“Is Vanessa going to be angry with me?””

“No one is going to hurt you.””

I wanted to believe those words as much as I wanted her to believe them.

I called my attorney, Daniel Brooks, and asked him to come to the house immediately. Then I contacted the security company and requested that they preserve the exterior camera footage from the previous several weeks.

I didn't tell Vanessa what I was doing.

She knocked on the bedroom door twice.

“Michael, we need to talk.””

“We'll talk tomorrow.””

“Please don't do this.””

I heard her footsteps retreat.

Daniel arrived forty minutes later carrying his laptop and a leather briefcase. He had handled my business contracts for twelve years and had helped Emily establish Sophie's trust before her death.

When he saw the memory cards, his expression changed.

“Where did these come from?””

“One was hidden in Emily's music box. The other came from Sophie. Apparently, Grace gave it to her.””

Daniel removed his glasses.

“Michael, before we play anything, I need you to understand that if these recordings contain evidence of financial fraud or a crime, we must preserve the originals. No editing, no copying over the files, and no confronting anyone until we know what we're dealing with.””

“Just tell me what they show.””

He connected the first card to his laptop.

The screen displayed a folder containing several video files. Most were dated during the final month of Emily's life.

Daniel opened the oldest recording.

At first, the image showed nothing but a hospital wall. Then the camera shifted, revealing Emily sitting upright in her bed.

She looked thinner than I remembered, but her eyes were alert.

A knock sounded.

The door opened.

Vanessa walked in.

She wasn't crying.

She wasn't a grieving acquaintance.

She looked angry.

“You promised me this would be over by now,” Vanessa said.

Emily stared at her.

“You told me you would leave my family alone.””

“I told you I wanted what was owed to me.””

“You were never owed anything.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“That's easy for you to say. You have Michael, the house, the money, the perfect little daughter. You have everything.””

Emily's voice trembled, but she didn't look away.

“I have a husband who barely comes home and a child who deserves to grow up safely. Don't confuse that with happiness.””

Vanessa stepped closer to the bed.

“Give me the documents.””

“No.””

“You don't understand what you're risking.””

“I understand perfectly.””

Vanessa leaned forward.

“Then you know I can make sure Michael never believes you.””

Emily reached toward the bedside table.

“I've already made copies.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked frightened.

“You wouldn't dare.””

“I would do anything to protect Sophie.””

The video ended abruptly.

I stared at the frozen screen.

Daniel slowly removed his glasses again.

“Do you recognize that conversation?””

“No.”” My voice sounded distant.

“I thought Vanessa had never met Emily.””

“Apparently, she had.””

I opened the second memory card.

A single video file appeared, dated the night Emily was hospitalized.

The recording began with a view of the hospital corridor. A nurse passed the camera, followed by Dr. Richard Lawson carrying a folder.

He entered Emily's room.

A few minutes later, Vanessa appeared.

She closed the door behind her.

Daniel increased the volume.

“You said the medication would make her sleep,” Vanessa whispered.

Dr. Lawson looked toward the bed.

“She was already deteriorating. I followed the treatment plan.””

“Then why is she getting worse?””

“Because her condition is serious.””

Vanessa gripped the edge of the desk.

“If she tells Michael what she knows, everything falls apart.””

Dr. Lawson's expression hardened.

“You said she had agreed to keep quiet.””

“She changed her mind.””

“Then you should have considered that before involving me.””

Vanessa leaned closer.

“You were the one who signed the paperwork.””

The room went silent.

I felt Daniel's hand settle on my shoulder.

“Michael,” he murmured, “we need to stop here and contact the appropriate authorities.””

But I couldn't look away.

On the screen, Dr. Lawson opened the folder.

“If anyone discovers what happened, we're both finished.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. You're finished if anyone discovers it. I have a fiancé who trusts me, a wedding to plan, and a future waiting for me.””

She glanced toward Emily's bed.

“And once Emily is gone, nobody will ever know what she was trying to prove.””

The recording stopped.

For a long moment, I heard only the ticking of the clock on the wall.

Then Sophie whispered from beside me.

“Daddy, is that why Grandma Grace was scared?””

I turned toward my daughter.

Her eyes were fixed on the screen.

“Sweetheart, did Grace ever tell you what happened to Mommy?””

Sophie shook her head.

“She just said Mommy loved me and that some grown-ups tell lies because they're afraid.””

I pulled her into my arms.

Daniel closed the laptop.

“We need to verify everything in those recordings. A conversation like that is serious, but we don't yet know exactly what happened medically.””

“Then we'll find out.””

I stood and walked to the window.

Across the dark garden, the lights of Atlanta shimmered beyond the trees.

I had spent three years believing Emily's death was a tragedy that had simply happened to us.

Now I had reason to suspect someone had used her final days to conceal something terrible.

And Vanessa was still in my house.

Daniel gathered the memory cards into separate evidence envelopes.

“Don't tell her what we've seen,” he warned.

“I'll contact a specialist first thing tomorrow. We'll also need to review the original medical records and any financial documents connected to Dr. Lawson.””

I nodded.

Then I heard footsteps outside the bedroom.

Vanessa opened the door without knocking.

Her eyes moved from Daniel's briefcase to Sophie's tear-streaked face.

“What are you doing in here?”” she demanded.

I stepped in front of my daughter.

“Packing.””

Vanessa frowned.

“Packing what?””

I looked directly at her.

“Your things.””

Her mouth fell open.

“Michael, you can't be serious.””

“Your engagement is over. You need to leave this house.””

For one heartbeat, she looked stunned.

Then her expression transformed.

“You think you can throw me away because of a few old recordings?””

Daniel stood.

“Ms. Reed, I strongly recommend that you say nothing further until you've obtained independent legal advice.””

Vanessa ignored him.

She stared at me with open hatred.

“You have no idea what you're doing.””

“Maybe not,” I said.

“But I know one thing. You're never going to be alone with Sophie again.””

Vanessa's eyes shifted toward my daughter.

And then she smiled.

It was the same cold smile I'd seen on Sophie's recording.

“You should ask your precious housekeeper what she was really doing in this family,” she said softly.

“Because if you think she's innocent, Michael, you're about to make the biggest mistake of your life.””

She walked out and slammed the door.

I looked at Daniel.

“Find out everything about Grace Miller.””

Then my phone rang.

The caller ID showed a number I recognized from the hospital records.

Dr. Richard Lawson.

I answered.

His voice was barely audible.

“Michael, listen carefully. Vanessa knows you've found the recordings.””

I gripped the phone.

“How?””

“Because she just called me.””

May you like

He paused, breathing hard.

“And if you want to know what really happened to Emily, you need to meet me before she gets to me first.””
