Chapter 10: The Woman My Father Kept Secret

The photograph showed my mother holding a newborn baby outside a private medical clinic.

On the back, written in blue ink, were two words.

Vanessa Carter.

I stared at them until the letters seemed to move.

Daniel stood beside me, studying the photograph on my phone.

“Michael, before you make any assumptions, we need to establish when this was taken and who wrote that name.””

“My father was supposed to be Lily's father. Now someone's telling me Vanessa was a Carter?””

“Someone is sending you information in carefully selected pieces. That alone should concern you.””

I barely heard him.

My father, Thomas Carter, had died eight years earlier from a heart attack. He had been a respected businessman, a devoted grandfather to Lauren's children, and the man who taught me that a family's reputation was its most valuable possession.

Apparently, he'd also been keeping secrets.

I called my mother.

This time, I didn't let her offer another excuse.

“I'm coming over. Daniel is coming with me. We have police involved, and you're going to tell me everything.””

“Michael—”

“Was Vanessa my father's daughter?””

The line went silent.

Then I heard my mother begin to cry.

“Please don't ask me that.””

My stomach dropped.

“Was she?””

“Yes.””

The single word shattered forty-one years of certainty.

I gripped the edge of Daniel's desk.

“How long have you known?””

“Since she was a baby.””

“And you let me get engaged to her?””

“No!”” My mother sounded genuinely horrified.

“I didn't know the woman you introduced me to was Vanessa Carter. She changed her surname, changed her appearance, and used another identity. By the time I recognized her, I was afraid of what she'd do.””

“You recognized her and said nothing?””

“She threatened to tell everyone what your father had done.””

“Then you should have let her!””

My voice echoed through the office.

Daniel raised a hand, urging me to lower my voice.

I closed my eyes.

“Where are you?””

“At home.””

“Don't leave.””

Twenty-five minutes later, I walked into my childhood home.

The familiar smell of furniture polish and lavender greeted me. Family photographs lined the staircase. My father's portrait still hung above the fireplace.

I had never hated a photograph before.

My mother sat in the living room holding a yellowed envelope. She looked smaller than she had that afternoon, as though the secrets she'd carried were finally crushing her.

Daniel sat beside me.

“Evelyn,” he said gently, “we need a complete and accurate account. Please don't leave anything out because you're afraid Michael will be hurt.””

She nodded.

Then she opened the envelope.

“Your father had an affair when you were fourteen.””

I stared at her.

“The woman was named Margaret Lawson. She worked as a nurse at a private clinic. Their relationship lasted nearly two years.””

“And Vanessa?””

“Margaret became pregnant. Your father arranged financial support, but he refused to acknowledge the child publicly.””

My mother placed an old birth certificate on the table.

The baby's name was Vanessa Carter.

Father: Thomas Carter.

Mother: Margaret Lawson.

I stared at it.

Vanessa wasn't simply a woman who had lied about knowing my family.

She was my father's daughter.

My half-sister.

I thought about the charity auction where we'd supposedly met. The dinners. The engagement ring. The life I'd imagined building with her.

A wave of nausea forced me to look away.

“Did she know?”” I whispered.

My mother lowered her head.

“She's known since she was sixteen.””

I stood so abruptly that my chair struck the table.

“She knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why would she pursue a relationship with me?””

“I don't know everything. But she hated your father. After he died, she came looking for the money she believed he had promised her.””

“Why didn't she come to me directly?””

“Because by then, she'd become convinced the entire Carter family had stolen her future.””

My mother wiped her eyes.

“Emily found out about Vanessa years before you met her. She discovered that Margaret Lawson had been receiving payments through one of your father's old business accounts.””

“Emily investigated my father's affair?””

“She found irregularities while helping establish Sophie's trust. She thought someone was trying to claim money from your father's estate using forged documents.””

“And Vanessa?””

“She threatened Emily. She said that if our family didn't give her what she wanted, she'd make sure none of us had a family left to protect.””

I turned toward Daniel.

“The DNA report identifying my father as Lily's father?””

My mother shook her head.

“Your father died before Lily was conceived. That report cannot establish that he fathered her. Someone used archived genetic material and placed it under the wrong identity.””

“Who?””

“I suspect Vanessa arranged it. But I don't have proof.””

Daniel studied the paperwork.

“Evelyn, did you pay for a DNA test involving Lily?””

My mother hesitated.

Then she nodded.

“Vanessa approached me after Emily died. She claimed Lily was Michael's daughter and demanded money. I paid for a test because I wanted to know whether she was telling the truth.””

“What happened?””

“The clinic sent me a report saying the tested samples weren't a parent-child match. Vanessa insisted the test had been mishandled.””

I stared at her.

“So you knew she was lying about Lily being mine?””

“I knew the test didn't support her claim. But I didn't know what she intended to do next.””

“And you still let her into my house.””

My mother covered her face.

“I was afraid she'd expose your father's affair, destroy the business, and drag Emily's name through the papers.””

I laughed once.

A horrible, empty sound.

“You protected a dead man's reputation while my daughter was living with someone who frightened her.””

My mother began sobbing.

I couldn't comfort her.

Not yet.

Daniel gathered the documents.

“We need to verify the original records, but this gives investigators a clear direction. We also need to establish Lily's actual parentage.””

My mother reached for my wrist.

“Michael, there's something else.””

I looked at her.

“Of course there is.””

She swallowed.

“Emily didn't just discover Vanessa's identity. She discovered that Vanessa had been working with someone inside your company.””

The room went still.

“Who?””

My mother pointed toward the envelope.

At the bottom was a bank transfer receipt showing several payments to an account associated with my company's former chief financial officer.

Peter Shaw.

I recognized the name immediately.

Peter had worked beside me for eleven years. He'd attended Emily's funeral. He'd held Sophie when she was a baby.

And he'd helped me select Vanessa's engagement ring.

I picked up the receipt.

“Where is Peter now?””

Daniel checked his phone.

“According to the business registry, he's still listed as a director of an investment company in Buckhead.””

My mother caught my hand again.

“Michael, please be careful. Vanessa isn't acting alone.””

I looked toward my father's portrait.

For the first time, I understood that some family secrets didn't stay buried because they were harmless.

They stayed buried because too many people benefited from the silence.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

He answered, listened, and slowly looked at me.

“What happened?”” I asked.

He lowered the phone.

“The police searched Vanessa's temporary apartment.””

“And?””

“They found a storage drive containing copies of your company's financial records, Sophie's trust documents, and several videos from Emily's hospital room.””

I felt my pulse quicken.

Daniel's expression darkened.

“But there's something else. Peter Shaw has disappeared.””

I stared at him.

May you like

Then he added the words that made my knees weaken.

“Michael, the last transaction from Peter's account was a payment of $250,000 to someone named Grace Miller.””
