Chapter 8: The Child in the Photograph
I was halfway to the elevator when Daniel caught my arm.
“Michael, wait.””
“My mother is missing, and Vanessa has a child with her. What exactly am I supposed to wait for?””
“For the police. We don't know whether that child is Sophie, whether Vanessa is alone, or what she's trying to accomplish.””
“Sophie is upstairs.””
Daniel's grip tightened.
“Then we need to understand why Vanessa would bring another child here.””
The thought had already entered my mind.
Another child.
A girl.
A child Vanessa wanted me to see.
I returned to the conference room and asked Daniel's assistant to bring the visitor's photograph from reception. She handed me a printed image taken by the building's security camera.
Vanessa stood in the lobby wearing a dark coat. Beside her was a little girl with long brown hair, perhaps seven or eight years old.
The child held Vanessa's hand.
She was looking directly at the camera.
And she looked disturbingly familiar.
Not like Sophie.
Like Emily.
The same narrow chin. The same serious eyes. The same small crease between her eyebrows when she concentrated.
I lowered the photograph.
“Who is she?””
Daniel studied it.
“We don't know.””
I called the police and explained the situation. They advised us not to approach Vanessa until officers arrived.
But before they could reach the building, my phone rang.
My mother.
“Mom, where are you?””
“Michael, I'm at home. Vanessa left.””
I exhaled sharply.
“Are you hurt?””
“No. But she took something.””
“The birth records?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you stop her?””
“Because she told me she'd destroy the original trust documents if I did.””
I pressed my hand against my forehead.
“Mom, there's a little girl with Vanessa. Who is she?””
My mother began crying again.
“I don't know what Vanessa told you, but you need to understand that Emily loved Sophie. She never questioned that child was yours.””
“That's not what I asked.””
“The little girl may be connected to Vanessa's past.””
“How?””
“I can't say for certain.””
I stared at the photograph.
“Mom, did Vanessa have a child before she met me?””
A long silence followed.
Then my mother whispered, “Yes.””
The word landed like a blow.
“How old is the child?””
“I don't know.””
“Is that her?””
“I can't tell from your description.””
“Mom, did you know about this?””
“I knew Vanessa had a daughter. I didn't know where the child was living, and I never knew whether she was safe.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Vanessa said the child had been adopted by another family. She said the matter was settled.””
I looked again at the little girl in the photograph.
“She doesn't look adopted away from Vanessa. She's standing right beside her.””
“Michael, please. I don't know anything else.””
I ended the call and turned to Daniel.
“We need to find out who that child is.””
“We will. But first, let's see what Vanessa wants.””
An officer arrived with two colleagues. They reviewed the security footage and agreed to accompany us to the lobby.
Vanessa was waiting near the reception desk.
The little girl stood beside her, holding a small backpack.
When Vanessa saw me, she smiled.
“Michael. Thank you for coming.””
I ignored the greeting.
“Who is the child?””
Vanessa looked down at the girl.
“Her name is Lily.””
“What's your relationship to her?””
“I'm her mother.””
The words echoed through the lobby.
Lily stared at the floor.
Vanessa placed a hand on her shoulder.
“Lily, this is Michael Carter. He's the man I told you about.””
The child looked up.
“Are you the man who was supposed to marry my mommy?””
I felt as though someone had struck me in the chest.
Vanessa's smile faded.
“Lily, sweetheart, we talked about this.””
“You said he would take care of us.””
“That's enough.””
The sharpness in Vanessa's voice made Lily flinch.
I stepped forward.
“Don't speak to her like that.””
Vanessa turned toward me.
“See? This is what I mean. You always think you can save everyone.””
“Why did you bring her here?””
“Because it's time you understood what Emily took from me.””
I stared at her.
“What did my wife take from you?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“My daughter.””
Lily looked up at her mother.
“You told me Aunt Emily was sick.””
Vanessa's expression changed.
“Lily, don't.””
“But you said she was the reason we couldn't be together.””
The lobby fell silent.
I looked at the child.
“Did you know Emily?””
Lily shook her head.
“No. Mommy showed me pictures.””
Vanessa grabbed her hand.
“We're leaving.””
I stepped in front of them.
“Not until you explain what this has to do with Sophie.””
Vanessa's face hardened.
“Everything.””
She reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded document.
“This is a copy of Lily's original birth certificate. Her father is listed as unknown. Her mother is Vanessa Lawson.””
I glanced at Daniel.
He took the document carefully and examined it.
“Where did you obtain this?””
“From my own records.””
“Do you have the original?””
“No.””
“Then we'll need to verify it.””
Vanessa ignored him.
“Emily knew about Lily. She promised to help me, and then she changed her mind. She used her influence to keep my daughter away from me.””
I felt a chill move through my body.
“That doesn't sound like Emily.””
“You didn't know everything about your wife.””
“Apparently, neither did you.””
Vanessa's expression turned vicious.
“She had a perfect life, Michael. A wealthy husband. A beautiful house.
A daughter everyone adored. And she still found a way to make me feel like nothing.””
“So you decided to punish her?””
“I wanted what was mine.””
“You wanted my money.””
“I wanted security!””
Her voice cracked through the lobby.
“I wanted a future where I didn't have to beg people to care about me.””
For the first time, I saw something beneath Vanessa's cruelty that resembled desperation.
But desperation didn't excuse what she'd done.
“You planted the necklace in Grace's bag,” I said.
“You tried to transfer Sophie's trust. You prepared boarding school documents without my permission.””
Vanessa's eyes flickered toward Lily.
“I did what I had to do.””
“No. You did what you wanted to do.””
She stepped closer.
“You think you're the victim here? Emily hid things from you. Your mother hid things from you. Even Grace has been lying to you for years.””
“About what?””
Vanessa smiled.
“Ask Grace why she never told you who Lily's father is.””
Lily suddenly pulled her hand free.
“Mommy, you promised you wouldn't lie anymore.””
Vanessa's face went white.
“Lily, be quiet.””
“You said Michael would help us find my daddy.””
My heart stopped.
I stared at the child.
“Your father?””
Lily nodded.
“Mommy said he lives in Atlanta. She said he has a little girl, too.””
Vanessa grabbed her shoulders.
“That's enough!””
One of the officers stepped forward.
“Ma'am, please release the child.””
Vanessa reluctantly let go.
I knelt in front of Lily.
“Sweetheart, do you know your father's name?””
She looked at Vanessa.
Her mother shook her head frantically.
Lily hesitated, then whispered, “I saw it on a paper in Mommy's bag.””
“What paper?””
“The one with the picture of a man holding a baby.””
My heart began hammering.
“Can you tell me the man's name?””
Lily's lips trembled.
Then she spoke the words that changed everything.
“Michael Carter.””
For a moment, the world seemed to stop.
I looked at Vanessa.
She didn't deny it.
She simply closed her eyes.
Daniel stepped beside me.
“Michael, we need to take this one step at a time.””
But I couldn't stop staring at Lily.
If she was telling the truth, then Vanessa had a child whose birth might be connected to mine.
And if that child was my daughter, I had another little girl whose existence I had never known.
I turned toward Vanessa.
“Is Lily my daughter?””
Vanessa opened her eyes.
Then she reached into her coat and pulled out a sealed envelope.
“Before you decide whether to hate me,” she whispered, “you need to read what Emily wrote the day Lily was born.””
She handed me the envelope.

On the front, in Emily's unmistakable handwriting, were the words:
For Michael, if he ever discovers the second child.
