Chapter 9: The Truth Nobody Wanted Me to Find
I found the original document in an old storage box hidden behind the closet.
Vanessa didn’t stop me.
That scared me more than if she had fought.
She just stood there.
Watching.
Waiting for the moment I discovered everything.
The paper was old.
Folded.
Protected.
Like someone had hidden a piece of their life inside it.
I opened it.
My eyes immediately went to the father’s name.
Adrian Cole.
I expected that.
What I didn’t expect was the handwritten note attached behind it.
My fingers froze.
“What is this?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“Tell me.””
She swallowed.
“That was written by Adrian.””
I read the first line.
*“If Vanessa chooses Daniel, he deserves to know the truth.””*
My heart sank.
I kept reading.
The note explained that Adrian had discovered something after Emma’s birth.
Something Vanessa never wanted anyone to know.
I looked up.
“What did he discover?””
Vanessa sat down.
“I didn’t know how to tell you.””
“Tell me now.””
She wiped her tears.
“Emma wasn’t supposed to survive.””
The words made no sense.
“What?””
“When she was born, there were complications.””
She looked at the floor.
“The doctors said there was a chance we could lose her.””
I remembered the day.
I remembered holding Vanessa’s hand.
I remembered crying when I first held Emma.
“I was there.””
“Yes.””
Her voice cracked.
“You were.””
“Then what are you hiding?””
Vanessa took a deep breath.
“Adrian left because he couldn’t handle it.””
“Handle what?””
“The responsibility.””
I stared at her.
“He ran away.””
“Yes.””
“Then why does this matter?””
She looked at me.
“Because before he left, he made a deal.””
I felt a chill.
“What deal?””
“He said if Emma survived, he would disappear.””
“And?””
“And I promised I would never tell you the truth.””
I frowned.
“That makes no sense.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“The truth about what happened that night.””
“What happened?””
She hesitated.
Then she whispered:
“Adrian caused the accident.””
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
“You’re saying he hurt Emma?””
“No.””
She shook her head quickly.
“Not intentionally.””
“Then what?””
“He was driving.””
My stomach tightened.
“The night she was born?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He was rushing me to the hospital.””
I looked at the document again.
The pieces started connecting.
Adrian wasn’t just a man who abandoned a child.
He was connected to the moment her life almost ended.
But one question remained.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Vanessa’s tears fell.
“Because I was afraid you would hate her.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She was his daughter.””
Her voice broke.
“And I thought every time you looked at her, you would see him.””
I stepped back.
The idea was almost impossible to understand.
After everything.
After the lies.
After the pain.
She still believed I could stop loving Emma.
But then I remembered something.
The pool.
The fear.
The marks.
“Vanessa.””
She looked up.
“Who told you Emma was a problem?””
She went silent.
Too long.
My chest tightened.
“Who?””
Finally, she whispered:
“Adrian.””
The answer landed like a punch.
“He told me she was a reminder of everything I lost.””
I stared at her.
“And you believed him?””
She covered her face.
“I was weak.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were scared.””
A pause.
“But Emma paid the price.””
Vanessa started crying harder.
Then my phone rang.
This time, it wasn’t Adrian.
It was the school.
I answered immediately.
“Hello?””
The voice on the other end sounded nervous.
“Mr. Carter… Emma didn’t come to class today.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“She was picked up this morning.””
I felt cold.
“By who?””
Silence.
Then the receptionist answered.
“Your wife.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She stood frozen.
“I didn’t take her.””
The phone slipped slightly in my hand.
Because if Vanessa wasn’t the person who picked up my daughter…
May you like
Then someone else had taken Emma.
And there was only one person who had a reason to do it.
