Chapter 7: The Name Hidden in the Records

For a few seconds, I couldn’t hear anything.

Not the traffic outside.

Not Michael moving in the chair.

Not even Emma’s voice as she happily explained the drawing she had made.

All I heard was Vanessa’s sentence repeating in my head.

“You are not Emma’s biological father.””

I looked down at the little girl standing in front of me.

My little girl.

She was holding a piece of paper with shaky crayon lines.

Three people.

A house.

A sun.

A family.

“Daddy?”” Emma asked.

I forced a smile.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Do you like it?””

I knelt down and took the drawing.

“It’s perfect.””

She smiled.

Then she ran back to the table.

I waited until she was out of earshot before turning back to Michael.

“You knew?””

Michael looked uncomfortable.

“Not everything.””

“But you knew there was a possibility.””

He lowered his eyes.

“I knew Vanessa had doubts.””

I felt anger rising again.

“Doubts?””

My voice became sharper.

“She spent years letting me believe Emma was my daughter.””

Michael didn’t argue.

Because he knew I was right.

Then my phone buzzed again.

Another message from Vanessa.

*“Please come home. We need to talk face to face.””*

I stared at the screen.

Part of me wanted to go.

Not because I trusted her.

Because after eight years together, I still wanted to understand how we got here.

I told Michael to stay with Emma while I met Vanessa.

He hesitated.

“Are you sure?””

“No.””

I looked toward my daughter.

“But I need answers.””

The house felt different when I returned.

The same walls.

The same furniture.

But it no longer felt like home.

Vanessa was waiting in the living room.

She looked exhausted.

No anger.

No accusations.

Just fear.

“You came.””

“I want the truth.””

She nodded slowly.

“You deserve that.””

I stood across from her.

“Start with Emma.””

Vanessa looked down.

“I was pregnant six years ago.””

“I know.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You know I was pregnant. You don’t know everything.””

My jaw tightened.

“Then tell me.””

She sat down.

“I found out I was pregnant two weeks before we got married.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“You were traveling constantly. We had just started building the company. We barely saw each other.””

I remembered those months.

The late nights.

The flights.

The pressure.

“I thought the baby was yours.””

The words were quiet.

But they landed heavily.

“Thought?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Because there was someone else.””

The room became cold.

“Michael.””

She immediately shook her head.

“No.””

That surprised me.

“Then who?””

She looked away.

And for a moment, she looked ashamed.

“Someone from before you.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Who?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Who is Emma’s biological father?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“A man named Adrian Cole.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But Vanessa’s reaction told me everything.

“You loved him?””

She closed her eyes.

“Once.””

“Then why marry me?””

She looked at me.

“Because he disappeared.””

I stayed silent.

“He left when I told him I was pregnant.””

“And I was the replacement?””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“You were the person who stayed.””

That sentence should have comforted me.

It didn’t.

Because I remembered Emma’s face in the pool.

The fear.

The tears.

The little girl who thought she could disappear and everyone would be happier.

“You said I wasn’t her biological father,” I said.

Vanessa nodded.

“But you became her father.””

“Then why hurt her?””

She looked down.

And finally, the answer came.

“Because Adrian came back.””

I froze.

“When?””

“Eight months ago.””

The room felt smaller.

“He found me.””

“And you never told me?””

“No.””

“Why?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because he wanted Emma.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“He said she was his daughter. He said he had rights.””

My hands curled into fists.

“And what did you do?””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“I tried to keep him away.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

“No.””

She whispered.

“It doesn’t.””

Then she reached into a drawer and pulled out an envelope.

“I kept this because I was afraid.””

I opened it.

Inside was a photo.

A man standing beside Vanessa.

Holding a baby.

Emma.

My fingers trembled.

On the back of the photo was a date.

The day Emma was born.

And underneath it was one sentence.

*“If you ever take my daughter from me, I’ll make sure Daniel knows the truth.””*

I looked at Vanessa.

“You were being threatened.””

She nodded.

“But that still doesn’t explain the pool.””

Her face collapsed.

“I know.””

A silence filled the room.

May you like

Then she whispered:

“Daniel… Adrian wasn’t the only person watching Emma.””
