Chapter 6: The Truth Vanessa Buried

I stared at the folder for several seconds.

I didn’t open it.

Not because I wasn’t curious.

Because some part of me already knew.

Whatever was inside would change everything.

Michael watched me carefully.

“You deserve to know.””

I looked at him.

“Then tell me.””

He took a breath.

“Before Emma was born, Vanessa was different.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“She was happy. Excited. She talked about becoming a mother every day.””

“That’s the woman I knew.””

Michael nodded.

“But after Emma was born, something changed.””

I looked toward the hallway where Emma was sitting with a coloring book.

“She never loved her?””

Michael shook his head.

“No. That’s not what I’m saying.””

He paused.

“She loved her too much.””

The answer confused me.

“What?””

Michael leaned forward.

“Vanessa became obsessed with being a perfect mother. She was terrified of failing. Every mistake Emma made felt like proof that she was a bad mother.””

I listened silently.

Then I asked:

“So she hurt her because she was scared?””

Michael looked away.

“I’m saying fear can make people do terrible things.””

I shook my head.

“Fear doesn’t explain putting a child underwater.””

“No.””

His voice became quiet.

“It doesn’t.””

The honesty surprised me.

He wasn’t defending her.

He was explaining how she got there.

I opened the folder.

Inside were old documents.

Hospital records.

Letters.

Photos.

Then I found something strange.

A DNA test request.

My eyes narrowed.

“What is this?””

Michael didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me more.

“Daniel…”

I looked up.

“Tell me.””

He swallowed.

“The test was done six years ago.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

He looked at the papers.

“Because Vanessa suspected something about Emma’s birth.””

I flipped through the pages.

The results were there.

But one page was missing.

The final result.

“Where is the rest?””

Michael shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

I stood up.

“What exactly are you saying?””

Before he could answer, my phone rang.

It was Vanessa.

I almost ignored it.

But then I saw the message beneath the call.

*“Daniel, please. You need to hear my side before you make a decision.””*

I answered.

“What do you want?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Where is Emma?””

“She’s safe.””

A long pause.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“You don’t understand what you’re protecting her from.””

My anger returned.

“You mean from you?””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“From the person who started all of this.””

I looked at Michael.

He was watching me.

“Who?””

Silence.

Then Vanessa said:

“Daniel… Emma’s biological father is not who you think.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“What are you talking about?””

“I tried to tell you years ago.””

“No. You tried to hide it.””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

Her answer came softly.

“Afraid you would stop loving her.””

I looked at Emma through the glass door.

She was sitting on the floor, drawing a picture of our family.

Me.

Her.

And a house.

A simple picture.

A child’s idea of safety.

Then Vanessa said the words that changed the entire story.

“Daniel… you are not Emma’s biological father.””

The room went silent.

But before I could respond, Emma walked toward me holding her drawing.

She smiled.

“Daddy, I made us a picture.””

I looked at her.

At the little girl I had raised.

The little girl who called me when she was scared.

The little girl who trusted me.

And I realized something.

Blood had never made me her father.

Love had.

But the missing DNA result still held one terrifying question.

If I wasn’t Emma’s biological father…

Then who was?

And why had Vanessa spent six years trying to bury the answer?
