Chapter 14: The Truth About Michael
I had spent years trusting Michael.
Business partner.
Friend.
Someone I called when life became difficult.
Someone who knew my family.
And now he was standing in front of me with the same expression everyone had worn when they were hiding something.
Fear.
“Explain.””
Michael looked away.
“I never wanted you involved.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He closed his eyes.
“I knew about the baby.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
Vanessa gasped.
“You knew?””
Michael nodded slowly.
“I found out years ago.””
I stepped closer.
“How?””
He swallowed.
“My father worked at the hospital.””
The room went quiet.
“He was one of the administrators.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Your father?””
Michael nodded.
“He was involved in the records.””
“Changing them?””
“Yes.””
I stared at him.
“So your family helped hide this?””
“No.””
His voice became desperate.
“My father discovered something was wrong. He tried to fix it.””
“Then why didn’t he tell anyone?””
Michael looked down.
“Because he was threatened.””
“By who?””
He didn’t answer.
I already knew.
“Adrian?””
Michael shook his head.
“No.””
That surprised me.
“Then who?””
Michael looked toward Vanessa.
“Someone who had more power than Adrian.””
The room became colder.
“Who?””
Michael hesitated.
Then he said:
“Emma’s birth was connected to a lawsuit.””
I frowned.
“What lawsuit?””
“A medical negligence case.””
I stared at him.
“Against the hospital?””
“Yes.””
Michael explained that years ago, a doctor involved in Emma’s delivery had made a mistake.
A mistake that almost cost both children their lives.
The hospital wanted everything buried.
The records.
The mistakes.
The evidence.
And somehow, two babies became part of a secret.
“But where is the other child?””
Michael looked at me.
“That’s what I’ve been trying to find.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My voice became cold.
“You’ve been trying to find him while pretending to help me?””
Michael looked hurt.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
“The truth.””
I laughed quietly.
“The truth is the only thing I’ve wanted.””
He had no answer.
Then Emma appeared again.
“Daddy?””
I immediately turned.
She was holding her drawing.
But this time, she wasn’t smiling.
“Why does everyone keep crying?””
The question destroyed the room.
Because none of us had a good answer.
I walked toward her.
“Sometimes adults make mistakes.””
She looked at me.
“Did I do something wrong?””
“No.””
I knelt.
“Never.””
She touched my face.
“Then why is everyone scared?””
I didn’t know what to say.
Because she was right.
Everyone had been scared.
And every time they were scared, Emma suffered.
Later that night, after Emma finally slept, I sat alone in the kitchen.
The house was quiet.
For the first time in days, nobody was yelling.
Nobody was lying.
But the silence felt heavy.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
One photo.
A teenage boy standing outside a school.
Underneath was a message.
*“You wanted the truth about Emma’s twin.””*
My heart stopped.
Another message appeared.
*“He has been watching your family for years.””*
I stared at the screen.
May you like
Then the final message arrived.
*“And tomorrow, he is coming home.””*
