Chapter 8: The Man Who Came Back
I spent the night staring at that photo.
A stranger holding my daughter.
A stranger who shared her blood.
A stranger who believed he could walk back into her life after six years.
But the thing I couldn’t understand was Vanessa.
If she was protecting Emma from Adrian, why had Emma been afraid of her?
Why had my daughter whispered that her own mother wanted her gone?
The next morning, I met Vanessa at a coffee shop away from the house.
I didn’t want Emma hearing another argument.
I didn’t want her seeing us fight anymore.
“Tell me everything,” I said.
Vanessa wrapped both hands around her cup.
“Adrian was charming.””
I said nothing.
“He made me believe he cared.””
Her voice became quieter.
“But when things became difficult, he disappeared.””
“And then?””
“Then I met you.””
I looked away.
“I loved you.””
That hurt more than anger.
Because I didn’t know if it was true anymore.
“I thought we were happy.””
“We were.””
She looked at me.
“Until Adrian returned.””
She told me he appeared outside her workplace eight months earlier.
He knew everything.
Where she lived.
Where Emma went to school.
Where I worked.
“He said he had changed,” Vanessa said.
“Did you believe him?””
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Her eyes dropped.
“Because he threatened us.””
“What kind of threat?””
“He said if I involved the police, he would go to court and fight for custody.””
I leaned back.
“And you thought hurting Emma would protect her?””
Vanessa started crying.
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“I know how it sounds.””
“Because it’s unforgivable.””
She closed her eyes.
“I was scared.””
I looked at her.
“Emma was scared too.””
That silenced her.
For the first time, Vanessa looked like she truly understood what she had done.
“I never wanted her hurt.””
“But she was.””
“I know.””
The café went quiet.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice came through.
“Daniel Carter?””
My body stiffened.
“Yes.””
“I think we need to talk.””
I knew immediately.
“Adrian?””
A pause.
Then a calm laugh.
“So Vanessa finally told you.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Stay away from my daughter.””
He didn’t sound angry.
That scared me more.
“You still think she’s your daughter.””
“She is.””
“Legally, maybe.””
His words made my blood boil.
“You abandoned her.””
“I made mistakes.””
“No. You left.””
Silence.
Then Adrian said:
“You don’t know what happened.””
“I know enough.””
“No, Daniel.””
His voice became colder.
“You know Vanessa’s story.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She was watching me.
Terrified.
Adrian continued.
“You have no idea what she did six years ago.””
My stomach tightened.
“What are you talking about?””
“She lied to you.””
I almost laughed.
“Funny coming from you.””
“I’m serious.””
His voice lowered.
“The reason Vanessa hid Emma’s paternity wasn’t because she was afraid of losing you.””
I said nothing.
“She was afraid you would discover the truth about why I left.””
My heart started pounding.
“What truth?””
A long pause.
Then Adrian said:
“Ask Vanessa why Emma’s birth certificate was changed.””
The call ended.
I slowly lowered my phone.
Vanessa’s face had gone completely white.
“What did he mean?””
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
Her lips trembled.
“I can explain.””
I stood.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“Not anymore.””
She reached for my arm.
“Daniel, please.””
I pulled away.
“Where is the original birth certificate?””
She looked down.
And that was when I knew.
