Chapter 12: The Betrayal Inside My Own Home
I stared at the photograph.
I couldn’t move.
Couldn’t speak.
Because the person standing beside Adrian wasn’t a stranger.
It was Michael.
My friend.
My business partner.
The man who sat across from me and pretended to help me uncover the truth.
Vanessa noticed my expression.
“What is it?””
I handed her the photo.
The moment she saw it, she stopped breathing.
“No.””
The word came out as a whisper.
I looked at her.
“You knew?””
She shook her head quickly.
“No.””
“Then why do you look terrified?””
She stared at the picture.
“I didn’t know Michael was involved.””
The detective looked between us.
“Who is he?””
I answered quietly.
“Someone I trusted.””
The drive back was unbearable.
Too many questions.
Too many lies.
Michael had known.
Maybe not everything.
Maybe not from the beginning.
But enough.
Enough to know my family was falling apart.
Enough to know Emma was in danger.
When we arrived home, Michael was waiting outside.
The moment he saw the police car, his face changed.
He knew.
I stepped out.
“You want to explain?””
His eyes went to the photo in my hand.
Then he sighed.
“I was hoping you wouldn’t find that.””
My anger exploded.
“You were hoping?””
He looked exhausted.
“Daniel—”
“No.””
I walked closer.
“You watched me destroy myself trying to understand what happened to my daughter.””
Michael looked down.
“I was trying to fix it.””
“By lying?””
“I was trying to protect Emma.””
I laughed.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
The same excuse.
The same words.
Everyone claimed they were protecting her.
And somehow, she was always the one getting hurt.
“Tell me the truth.””
Michael was silent.
Then he said:
“I knew Adrian was coming back.””
My chest tightened.
“How long?””
“Months.””
I felt betrayed all over again.
“You knew?””
“I was trying to stop him.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
His answer was quiet.
“Because Vanessa begged me not to.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She closed her eyes.
“You involved him?””
“I didn’t know what else to do.””
“You could have told me.””
“I was afraid.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone was afraid.””
I looked at Emma.
She was standing near the doorway, holding her stuffed rabbit.
Watching adults destroy the world around her again.
That was when I knew something had to change.
The adults had spent years protecting themselves.
Now someone needed to protect her.
I turned to Michael.
“Why did Adrian want Emma?””
Michael hesitated.
Then he said:
“Because he believed she was connected to something bigger.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Michael looked uncomfortable.
“Adrian wasn’t just trying to be a father.””
“Then what was he trying to do?””
He looked at the house.
At Emma.
Then back at me.
“He believed Emma’s existence could destroy his future.””
The words made no sense.
“Why?””
Michael took a deep breath.
“Because Adrian had another secret.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What secret?””
Michael looked at Vanessa.
She already knew.
That scared me.
Then he said:
“Emma wasn’t the only child born that night.””
I froze.
“What?””
Michael lowered his voice.
“There was another baby.””
The world seemed to stop.
I looked at Emma.
Then at Vanessa.
“What are you saying?””
Vanessa started crying.
Because she knew there was no more hiding.
Michael whispered:
“Daniel… Emma had a twin.””
May you like
And somewhere in the back of my mind, I realized the truth I had been chasing wasn’t just about who Emma’s father was.
It was about what happened to the child nobody wanted me to know existed.
