Chapter 13: The Child Nobody Mentioned
For a long time, nobody spoke.
Not because there was nothing to say.
Because there was too much.
A twin.
Another child.
Another secret buried beneath all the others.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Is this true?””
She didn’t answer immediately.
And that silence was enough.
My chest tightened.
“Vanessa.””
Tears rolled down her face.
“Yes.””
The word was barely audible.
“Yes, Emma had a twin.””
Emma was still standing near the doorway.
She didn’t understand everything.
But she understood enough to know something was wrong.
I walked over and gently guided her back to the living room.
“Sweetheart, why don’t you sit with your blanket for a minute?””
She looked at me.
“Are you leaving again?””
The question hurt more than anything else.
“No.””
I knelt down.
“I’m right here.””
Only when she nodded did I stand again.
I turned back to Vanessa.
“Tell me.””
She sat down.
Her hands were shaking.
“When Emma was born, there were two babies.””
I listened.
“One girl.””
She looked toward Emma.
“And one boy.””
My heart pounded.
“What happened?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“The delivery was complicated. The doctors told us both babies were in danger.””
“And?””
“Emma survived.””
The pause afterward felt unbearable.
“And the other baby?””
Vanessa looked down.
“He didn’t.””
I felt my anger soften for a second.
Not disappear.
But soften.
Because behind every lie was a moment of pain.
A moment someone couldn’t handle.
“But you said Emma had a twin.””
“She did.””
“So why does Adrian think she’s connected to something?””
Vanessa looked at Michael.
Michael answered.
“Because Adrian never believed the second baby died.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Michael took out another document.
“This was found in Adrian’s files.””
I read the paper.
It was an old hospital inquiry.
A request for information.
A search for a missing newborn.
My hands went cold.
“Someone investigated this?””
Michael nodded.
“Adrian did.””
“Why?””
“Because he believed the hospital covered something up.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Did it?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
The answer terrified me.
After everything, she still didn’t know.
Michael continued.
“Adrian spent years trying to find answers. He became convinced the second child was alive.””
I looked at the photo again.
Adrian.
Michael.
The secrets.
The lies.
Everything was connected.
“But why would he take Emma?””
Michael hesitated.
“Because he believed Emma was the only person who could lead him to the truth.””
I felt sick.
“She’s a child.””
“I know.””
“No.””
My voice hardened.
“People keep forgetting that.””
I looked at Emma.
“She is not a clue. She is not evidence. She is not something people can use.””
Nobody argued.
Because nobody could.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“There’s something else.””
I turned.
“What?””
She reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I never opened it.””
I stared at it.
“From who?””
“Adrian.””
“When?””
“Six years ago.””
I took it.
Inside was a letter.
The handwriting was messy.
Desperate.
The first sentence made my heart stop.
*“If you are reading this, then my son is alive.””*
I looked up.
“My son?””
Vanessa started crying.
“I never knew.””
I continued reading.
The letter claimed the baby had been transferred during the emergency.
That someone at the hospital had changed the records.
That Adrian had spent years searching.
Then I reached the final line.
*“The person who knows where he is has been closer to you than you realize.””*
I looked at Michael.
His face had changed.
Not surprise.
Fear.
I slowly lowered the letter.
“Michael.””
He said nothing.
“Why do you look like you know what this means?””
Silence.
May you like
Then Michael whispered:
“Because I do.””
