Chapter 5: The Person Behind the Lies
I drove home feeling like I was living inside someone else’s life.
The house looked the same.
The same flowers near the front door.
The same family photos on the walls.
The same place where Vanessa and I had promised each other forever.
But now every room felt like a crime scene.
Because the truth wasn’t hidden in some dark corner.
It had been sitting right in front of me.
I found Vanessa in the living room.
She was drinking coffee calmly.
Almost peacefully.
Like nothing had happened.
Like our daughter’s fear was just an inconvenience.
“We need to talk,” I said.
She looked up.
“If this is about yesterday—”
“It’s about the last year.””
Her expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I noticed.
“What are you talking about?””
I threw the medical records onto the table.
Her face went pale.
For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.
“Where did you get those?””
“The doctor.””
She stood up.
“You had no right.””
I laughed.
“No right?””
My voice rose.
“I had no right to know my daughter was getting hurt?””
“She wasn’t hurt.””
I stared at her.
“You expect me to believe that?””
Vanessa walked closer.
“You don’t understand what it’s like living with her.””
There it was again.
The same sentence.
The same attempt to make Emma the problem.
“What does that mean?””
She looked frustrated.
“She manipulates people.””
I felt sick.
“She’s six years old.””
“You don’t see what I see.””
“Then explain it.””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
I stepped closer.
“Explain why our daughter was afraid to tell me.””
Silence.
“Explain why she thought I would leave her.””
Still silence.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“Because you always choose work.””
The words hit me.
Not because they were true.
Because they were exactly what Emma had repeated.
“You’ve been telling her that?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I was angry.””
“Angry enough to hurt her?””
Her eyes snapped back.
“I never hurt my daughter.””
I wanted to believe that.
A part of me still did.
Because accepting the truth meant accepting that the person I loved had become someone I didn’t recognize.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Michael.
I opened it.
*“Daniel, we need to talk before Vanessa tells you her version.””*
I looked at Vanessa.
She saw the name.
Her face changed instantly.
“You contacted him?””
“No.””
“Then he contacted you.””
I didn’t answer.
Because suddenly I understood.
Michael wasn’t just part of Vanessa’s secret.
He was afraid of it too.
I left the house with Emma and stayed at a hotel that night.
I didn’t trust Vanessa near my daughter.
Not anymore.
The next morning, Michael arrived.
He looked exhausted.
Different from the confident businessman I knew.
He sat across from me.
“I should have told you sooner.””
I didn’t say anything.
He looked down.
“Daniel… Vanessa didn’t start this because she wanted to hurt Emma.””
My jaw tightened.
“Then why?””
Michael took a deep breath.
“Because she was trying to protect herself.””
“From what?””
He looked at me.
And then said the one thing I never expected.
“From the truth about Emma’s birth.””
I froze.
“What are you talking about?””
Michael pulled a folder from his bag.
“I found these documents when I was helping Vanessa organize old files.””
He placed them on the table.
My hands moved toward the folder.
But before I opened it, Michael stopped me.
“There’s something you need to understand first.””
“What?””
May you like
His voice dropped.
“Emma isn’t the only secret Vanessa has been hiding.””
