Chapter 7: The Truth I Buried

For seven years, I had carried one secret alone.

And the moment Patricia said those words, I knew the past I tried to bury had finally found me.

Michael stared at me.

“Sarah?””

I couldn’t look at him.

Not because I was guilty.

Because I was afraid.

Afraid of losing the only family I had fought so hard to protect.

“Why isn’t Ethan’s name on the birth certificate?””

His voice was quiet.

But somehow that hurt more than anger.

I sat down slowly.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

I looked at him.

“Before we got married.””

His expression changed.

“You were going to tell me?””

“Yes.””

“But you didn’t.””

I swallowed.

“No.””

The silence between us felt heavier than any argument we had ever had.

Michael sat across from me.

“Why?””

I looked at Lily’s picture on the wall.

Because that little girl was the reason I had stayed silent.

The reason I had made every decision.

“When Ethan disappeared, I was alone.””

Michael looked down.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice shook.

“You know the story Patricia told you. You know the version where Ethan was irresponsible and I was abandoned.””

I took a breath.

“But the truth is, when Lily was born, I didn’t know where Ethan was. I didn’t know if he was coming back. I didn’t know if he was alive.””

Michael listened.

“So the hospital asked me about the birth certificate.””

I continued.

“I didn’t put his name down because I had no way to contact him.””

Michael leaned forward.

“You could have told me.””

“I wanted to.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

Because Patricia’s shadow had always been there.

Because she made me believe my past would destroy my future.

“Because when I met you, Patricia already hated me.””

Michael looked away.

“She didn’t hate you.””

I gave him a tired smile.

“You still believe that?””

He didn’t answer.

I continued.

“She told me I was embarrassing you. She told me a man like you would eventually realize you made a mistake.””

Michael’s face tightened.

“She said that?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“I loved you.””

That was the hardest sentence I had ever said.

“I thought if I kept proving I was good enough, she would eventually accept me.””

Michael looked broken.

“And I let her make you feel that way.””

I didn’t respond.

Because I didn’t know if that was enough.

The next day, we met Ethan.

Not at our house.

Not with Lily there.

At a small coffee shop outside town.

I saw him before he saw me.

He looked older.

Tired.

But familiar.

When his eyes met mine, he stopped.

“Sarah.””

I sat down.

“Tell me everything.””

He nodded.

“I owe you that.””

For the next hour, Ethan told me what Patricia had done.

How she contacted him after learning I was pregnant.

How she threatened to ruin his reputation.

How she convinced him that staying away would protect me.

But there was one thing that bothered me.

“Why didn’t you fight?””

His eyes dropped.

“Because I was young.””

“That’s not an answer.””

He nodded.

“You’re right.””

He looked at me.

“I was scared.””

That honesty surprised me.

“I thought if I disappeared, Patricia would leave you alone.””

“But she didn’t.””

“No.””

He looked down.

“She used my disappearance to make you dependent on Michael.””

I felt sick.

Because suddenly every piece connected.

The comments.

The manipulation.

The control.

“She wanted me to believe I had no one.””

Ethan nodded.

“She wanted everyone isolated.””

When I got home, Michael was waiting.

He looked different.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Just tired.

“I talked to my mother.””

I froze.

“What happened?””

“She admitted more.””

My stomach tightened.

“What more?””

Michael handed me a folder.

“She kept records.””

I opened it.

Inside were copies of messages.

Old messages.

Between Patricia and Ethan.

My hands shook as I read.

One sentence made my blood run cold.

*If you ever come back, I will make sure Sarah loses everything.*

I looked at Michael.

“She wrote this?””

He nodded.

“There’s more.””

I turned the page.

And saw another message.

A message sent seven years ago.

The day Ethan disappeared.

*The baby will grow up calling my son her father. You will never be part of this family.*

I stopped breathing.

Because underneath that message was one name.

The person Patricia sent it to.

Not Ethan.

Not me.

Someone else.

May you like

Someone who knew everything.

And that person had been inside my family all along.
